The Tech Report have just finished up their latest System build guide, with updates to the Budget, Sweet Spot and High End machines. The components involved each get a page to allow you to see the differences in recommendations at a glance, both in performance and price. The example Budget build now includes the $100 Crucial BX100 250GB, the last of the builds to upgrade to an SSD. Also included is a quiet, yet overclockable Stealth Fighter which weighs in at an estimated $1500 and should satisfy any gamer that can't afford their Maxwellator XXL. Take look at their recommendations and compare it to our own Hardware Leaderboard for an overview of the parts that will give you the best bang for your buck.

I’d suspect not many people are building new systems right now.
With Windows 10/DirectX 12, an Intel “Tock” (Skylake), and a new generation of GPUs (Fiji with HBM anyone?) all roughly coming available to the masses in Q3, there’s a great incentive to wait just a little while longer.

That’s what I hate because I really need a new rig but I don’t want to buy and then instantly wish I would have waited to get a newer gen model and the fiji with HBM are supposed to come out in Q2 near the end if your thinking by calendar quarters or fiscal quarters its halfway through Q2.

Agreed.. BUT to be devil’s advocate, that is only on the high end. Fiji will be very expensive for a long time, Skylake isn’t that much of an improvement and will be a more expensive platform. Nvidia is already DX12 compliant. So for me, right now seems to be the hardest time I can ever remember to decide if you want to upgrade or wait. I’m trying to wait (don’t forget USB C).. but flip flop daily.

this has always been the problem. In the history of the computer world, with the ocasional exception, the rule has been simple. If you wait, it will get better. Always, 100%, if you just woulda waited X amount of time you would have gotten Y more stuff for Z less money. True something new is around the corner right now, but isn;t it always?

Another way to look at is, wait a little while and the stuff we have available now (that’s just fine for most people) will be a lot cheaper.

I already built my foot-warmer this winter. Unfortunately, it uses a lot less watts so it got a little chilly- even though it’s a couple of times faster than my previous rig.
Regardless, I used some of the recommended devices here and I’m delighted to report that the 980GTX and SSDs are everything they’re billed to be.
The good news is, I won’t be cooling off the house as much this summer.
