AMD has spilled the beans on at least one aspect of the R9 Nano: the release timeframe. On their Q2 earnings call yesterday AMD CEO Lisa Su made this telling remark:
“Fury just launched, actually this week, and we will be launching Nano in the August timeframe.”

Wccftech had the story based on the AMD earnings call, but unfortunately there is no other new information the card just yet. We've speculated on how much lower clocks would need to be to meet the 175W target with full Fiji silicon, and it's going to be significant. The air coolers we've seen on the Fury (non-X) cards to date have extended well beyond the PCB, and the Nano is a mini-ITX form factor design.
Regardless of where the final GPU and memory clock numbers are I think it's safe to assume there won't be much (if any) overclocking headroom. Then again, of the card does have higher performance than the 290X in a mini ITX package at 175W, I don't think OC headroom will be a drawback. I guess we'll have to keep waiting for more information on the official specs before the end of August.
so im guessing that since
so im guessing that since this is so tiny and hitting such an aggressive TDP of 175w it even boosting to something in the neighbourhood of 1ghz is out of the question?

Finally, a video card that can fit in my case. Really need to upgrade that old 5850 soon.
If what the OP suggests is
If what the OP suggests is true about the cards possible performance, then hopefully the pricing of the nano will stay below that of the 390x
I wouldn’t expect it under
I wouldn’t expect it under $500. It’s the full chip and it is mini ITX form factor. If the cooling system is silent, it will be selling like hot cakes to those with enough money in their pockets wanting a compact card. Also AMD can’t make yet enough Fiji chips, so they will not sell them cheap.
Guesstimate:
avg 15% slower
Guesstimate:
avg 15% slower in games then a Fury X (about GTX 980 level)
price $499 (if AMD stay in denial), $459 or under if AMD realize it didn’t create a maxwell killer.
BTW, any review site actually did a review of the Fury X and powertune?
If so what was the power saving running the card at various power limits?
If the nano is indeed a fully enabled Fiji, it should be ‘easy’ to get an idea of the performance expected. (assuming nano use better binned parts)
someone actually did play
someone actually did play with powertune (this also does wonder on the hawaii : 290x)

10% drop in gaming performance for a 100w saving.. putting the Fury X under 170w.
So the Nano should be faster then a GTX 980, using less power.
To bad AMD couldnt have released this model first, it would have been received much better…
“Interestingly, Tom’s Hardware managed to improve the power efficiency of the AMD Radeon R9 Fury X by 50% just by reducing the power limit of the card. Surprisingly the only tradeoff was a 10% reduction in the average frames per second. Average FPS dropped from 39.7 to 36 while power consumption dropped by nearly 100W from 267W to 170W.”
The author at wccftech, from
The author at wccftech, from where you copy paste the last paragraph, forgets to mention that moving powertune past -20% is heavily affecting the minimum frames per second. So on average Nano could be just 10% behind Fury X, but minimum frames go almost 50% down.
Keep your eyes out for the
Keep your eyes out for the Hot Chips Symposium on August 23-25, 2015! AMD will be giving presentations for these technologies listed below. And there are the usual presentations from the big names, Intel, IBM, etc. and some smaller names but Hot Chips is always good.
Day 1
Energy Efficient Graphics and Multi-media in 28nm Carrizo APU: Guhan Krishnan, Dan Bouvier, Praveen Dongara and Louis Zhang. | AMD
Day 2
AMD’s next Generation GPU and Memory Architecture: Joe Macri, Raja Koduri, Mike Mantor and Bryan Black. | AMD

I would get a used 290/780 and sit with it for 3-4 generations, if i had to buy a new card today.
These ~500-1000$ video cards with almost none price/performance increase can go fuck themselves.

August “availability” with an extra emphasis on the aforementioned quote! I have a feeling they wont actually be available just like Fury X and Fury..
With that said I agree Edmond. I would just snag another 290 if I didn’t have an itx motherboard 🙁 I did just pick up the ASUS MG279q which is definitely helping squeeze more performance out of the 290 even though I bumped up to 1440p.
