According to a couple of users from the Anandtech forums and others, there is another wave of AMD Fury X cards making their way out into the world. Opening up the top of the Fury X card to reveal the Cooler Master built water cooler pump, there are two different configurations in circulation. One has a teal and white Cooler Master sticker, the second one has a shiny CM logo embossed on it.
This is apparently a different pump implementation than we have seen thus far.
You might have read our recent story looking at the review sample as well as two retail purchased Fury X cards where we discovered that the initial pump whine and noise that AMD claimed would be gone, in fact remained to pester gamers. As it turns out, all three of our cards have the teal/white CM logo.
Our three Fury X cards have the same sticker on them.
Based on at least a couple of user reports, this different pump variation does not have the same level of pump whine that we have seen to date. If that's the case, it's great news – AMD has started pushing out Fury X cards to the retail market that don't whine and squeal!
If this sticker/label difference is in fact the indicator for a newer, quieter pump, it does leave us with a few questions. Do current Fury X owners with louder coolers get to exchange them through RMA? Is it possible that these new pump decals are not indicative of a total pump change over and this is just chance? I have asked AMD for details on this new information already, and in fact have been asking for AMD's input on the issue since the day of retail release. So far, no one has wanted to comment on it publicly or offer me any direction as to what is changing and when.
I hope for the gamers' sake that this new pump sticker somehow will be the tell-tale sign that you have a changed cooler implementation. Unfortunately for now, the only way to know if you are buying one of these is to install it in your system and listen or to wait for it to arrive and take the lid off the Fury X. (It's a Hex 1.5 screw by the way.)
Though our budget is more than slightly stretched, I'm keeping an eye out for more Fury X cards to show up for sale to get some more random samples in-house!
Want to eliminate pump noise
Want to eliminate pump noise ? wait for the nano.
(Its a full Fiji (the whole 4096 shader units + full HBM))
BTW, some people report normal pump noise, so it indeed seem to be a QA problem with coolmaster. I hope AMD got those cooler for super cheap because fiji doesn’t need water cooling (its TDP is near identical to a TitanX)
I think AMD went for the novelty aspect to keep the card itself small. To me this only appeal to people that want a quieter card un der load. as it is measurably quieter then any and all nvidia stock cards.
I will see how things goes, but I might just pickup a 290x and run that in crossfire (for VR, 100% perfect dual GPU scaling) and run them at 900mhz (TDP cut by like 30%)
That system will be significantly faster then a Fury X or 980 Ti for a fraction of the upgrade price. (about $200 VS $650)
nano is not likely gonna be
nano is not likely gonna be full fiji. Likely it will be a cut down version. Mostly due to cooler size won’t be able to keep that card cool enough without throttling aka 290x ref cooler fiasco.
It will be full. I was
It will be full. I was surprised too.
AMD gone with the water
AMD gone with the water cooling because they knew that the press was holding a loaded gun ready to fire for any excuse, or no excuse.
Whoever thinks that Fury Nano
Whoever thinks that Fury Nano is a full size Fiji is a complete idiot.
You should go work for AMD marketing sir, clearly you have no idea how the technical side works, but can talk out of your ass like no tomorrow.
Unlike the R9 Fury, AMD has
Unlike the R9 Fury, AMD has announced the bulk of the specs for the R9 Nano. This card will feature a fully enabled Fiji GPU, and given AMD’s goals I suspect this is where we’re going to see the lowest leakage bins end up.”
^This is from Anandtech’s review of Fury X.
Conclusions:
You are a complete idiot. :p
You have no idea how the technical side works. :p
You talk out of your ass. :p
To be fair, I wasn’t expecting it either.

Yeah just like me he is also an armchair expert/engineer, we know our shit XD
Funny you should say that
Funny you should say that considering there is an official AMD marketing rep here at pcper……
I’d be bullshit if I managed
I’d be bullshit if I managed to find one of these in stock, paid $650 or more, and then had to RMA it immediately (being without it for who knows how long).
Way to punish the early-adopters AMD. LOL
same thing happened to me for
same thing happened to me for the gtx970. terrible coil whine and would not even hit top speeds. thankfully I went with evga and they let me upgrade for free, well i had to pay shipping and handling.
this will always be the price for being an early adopter and it has always been this way.
AMD is tha best!
AMD is tha best!
Ryan,
Thanks for keeping
Ryan,
Thanks for keeping after AMD on this. We need to get to the bottom of things so we consumers can know if they have a revised or original pump design and how AMD will take care of original pump owners who are unhappy with the noise.
Ryan, thank for buying so
Ryan, thank for buying so many noisy Fury X. Only perfect cards left for us mere mortals.
So Nvidia with 970 and after
So Nvidia with 970 and after 6 months that wasn’t telling anybody, until someone found it, got the all clear. And of course 970 will always be sold with those wrong specs because it is made that way.
In the case of AMD you hurry up to crucify the company as fast as possible, before the new Fury X batch comes out on public, not giving the company any time at all and also not believing them that they have fixed the, whatever problem there was there to fix, with the first cards. I mean who play games with the audio at mute and his head in the PC case?
Nvidia responded pretty quick
Nvidia responded pretty quick when questioned about that issue and addressed it fully. And returns were allowed. Plus, 90% of 970 owners did not and have not even used that much ram with a single card config to even run the possibility of that being an issue. AMD has yet to respond to the first inquiry about the pump issue and reviewers/consumers are already finding cards with (possibly) an updated pump.
Also, a lot of people have their case on their desk and a pump whine can be really distracting if you’re trying to work at your PC or if it’s set up as a HTPC where you might not use a headset. One of the biggest trends right now is quiet/cool computing. Why be forced to wear a headset just to cover up a problem and annoyance from something you just spent $650 on? how come AMD hasn’t responded at all yet? You should really save up and buy an Nvidia graphics card, I think it would help turn your bizarre, biased attitude around and maybe suppress some of that anger, too.
nvidia…it will make all
nvidia…it will make all your problems go away…good one. you must be loving arkham knight as well…and just smiling when you local shops asks you for $200 over the monitor cost to get gsync.
if you are not getting paid by nvidia to be their apologist then you need help.
Do you read what you write?
Do you read what you write? NVidia was quick after 6 months and after someone come out and showed the problem. And what was their respond? “IT IS A GOOD DESIGN”
90% of owners don’t use that RAM? Really? That’s an arguments? i mean how do you measure it and how do you predict the future games requirements?
AMD has yes to respond? THE CARDS ARE ALREADY SELLING. Oh my. Where did we find this guy.
Are you serious about the sound problem? In the test 980Ti was louder in gaming. People don’t use Fury X and Titan for HTPCs. They get Strix series cards for example. People stopped putting their PCs on desks a decade ago if not more. They use NUCs today if they want to have something on their desk. What you describe is 1% of that 1% that will buy a Fury X and even from that tiny number only a small percentage will have a dead silent PC and only a small percentage of that percentage will have a real problem with the pump. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. This is AMD. Let’s make it look like something that affects everybody+dog.

Is this an Nvidia only site?
Is this an Nvidia only site? Or is it bad to have someone to warn you that there are people who see some articles to create a negative image for your objectivity?
This clown,as you call me, was writing in this site a couple of years ago that all those videos PCPer was making and where showing 7850K beating i3 in games, where so frequent that where creating an image that PR money from AMD had come this way. Where was you? I care about PCPer and every time I see articles that create an image that PCPer is not objective I will be shouting. WE NEED OBJECTIVITY TODAY.

It will never end with pieces of shit like you on the internet. I know you keep coming back here because here there is no feature to ignore your dumb ass. Or even a remote moderator to give out warnings or suspension to crazed dumb AMD morons like yourself. Enjoy your stay as many have moved to better forums to discuss tech. Fucking armchair loser.

lmfao leave it to some guy with a Sempron in his avatar to go full brand retard about a problem that would IMPACT *YOU* first and foremost as an AMD fanboy, if you actually bought and used their expensive products.
But you clearly don’t, you’re just fanboying for them so you can continue to bottomfeed on their cheap parts like the tech bottomfeeder that you are.
nVidia, Intel has way larger
nVidia, Intel has way larger marketing budget than AMD. Who do you think keeps these technology sites running?
I still can’t believe all the prominent technology sites sided with nVidia during 970 controversy and defended nVidia’s anti consumer behaviors.

AMD said the retail cards
AMD said the retail cards were fixed. This was demonstrably not true. (a.k.a. a “lie”)
These cards are noisy all the time, playing a game, running GPGPU, working in Excel, or sitting dead idle with the monitors off.
Then again, you’re probably still using that Nvidia Kepler card you were so concerned about, right?
I assume couple of them were
I assume couple of them were indeed fixed so I doubt AMD lied.
To me AMD was honest as Nvidia.
It is time for a third player.
Is the embossed logo stamped
Is the embossed logo stamped in the metal, or is just a thicker stuck-on label? There may be some vibration dampening going on here, and we all know that sometimes structural components need to be made to not resonate with added extra stiffeners embossed/stamped into housings and shrouds. perhaps some elastomer shocks where the pump attaches to the housing/frame could be offered for a later iteration. Different materials offer differing sound insulation properties, and vibration harmonics need to be dampened down, that whining sound is like the typical drone on a power steering pump. The hydraulic system’s noises are the hardest part to engineer with all the fluid dynamics calculations and the impeller/pump design is among the most difficult to get right.

Just got my XFX branded Fury x and it has the same sticker on the pump. I’ll install it in a bit and post what I hear.
Ryan have you contacted
Ryan have you contacted Newegg or XFX about possible RMA or exchange? I’d say you have 2 chances to see how XFX/AMD are handling this situation.
Btw, this poor fellow
Btw, this poor fellow received a SECOND Fury X from Newegg after RMA’ing the first…and the pump whine persists….

Dumb AMD idiots don’t know
Dumb AMD idiots don’t know when to quit when getting to deal with crap pducts Good for them fucking morons!
I don’t chastise AMD
I don’t chastise AMD fans/users for picking AMD, I only do if they try and get stupid about it and claim its actually better product. I do feel bad for anyone this happens to because frankly, its a problem that would piss me off to no end and I’d want it fixed ASAP without this BS run around from AMD.
Which is why I shake my head why some of these AMD fanboys are so quick to sweep it under the rug. It’s like FCAT and FreeSync all over again, and unsurprisingly, its the same AMD fanboys trying to fanboy the problems under the rug while blaming PCPer for being shills/biased against AMD lolol.
>>I don’t chastise AMD
>>I don’t chastise AMD fans/users for picking AMD…<< No; you only chastise them for not being as 'well compensated' as your self. /s It seems you're as stubborn as the AMD fans you go after. Not only does it provide insights into your personality, it also makes you appear weak. As I recall from psych, it is a bad sign (insecurity for one) when one insists on everyone else being in his own camp/ posse. There are places on the net for the smug - honestly. Try searching. You can also find little pockets equally filled with insecure, 'monied' teens or their adult counterparts who haven't matured. This is a tech blog; I doubt anyone is here to befriend or hook up with 'well paid' conceits. Taking every opportunity to inform total strangers of your perceived status is LAME. I wont even go into the holier-than-thou attitude. Maybe I missed it as I sometimes skip your diatribes, but I dont recall you ever bragging about being educated or having intelligence. Not even the possession of plain old common sense do you take time to wave in our digital faces. I'll read your work with real interest for once: impress us with the specifics of your Ivy League experiences and feel free to impart the particulars of your rise to piousness and decency.
Nonsense, I just stated why I
Nonsense, I just stated why I chastise them, for spreading stupidity/nonsense aka misinformation about said products. I never chastise anyone for not being able to afford better, AMD products have always filled that value brand niche and if someone prefers that product for that reasons that’s fine, just don’t sit and try to tell me there’s no difference between AMD and Nvidia when I am more than happy to tell you WHY there is a difference and WHY any premium is deserved.
As for the well compensated part, of course this goes hand-in-hand with my point that premium products like Intel and Nvidia are deserving of that difference in price, they’re just better in nearly every metric. If someone is going to then try and claim I’m stupidly spending more on one product vs. the other of course I’m going to point out the fact that differences in price are really not my primary concern because I can afford better.
And when it comes to education and all that, typically there’s a strong correlation there as well, I’m not going to apologize for doing well for myself in a career path that greatly benefitted from the kinds of info I learned on the internet over the years on enthusiast sites like this without having to wade through all the fanboy BS typically spread by AMD and their fanboys. Let’s just say I’m paying back the internet for all the help they’ve provided me over the years!

Yep, keep shaking it idiot, you obviously just don’t get it. 🙂
I suspect that the Fury might
I suspect that the Fury might be as good a deal. If the GPU is ROP bottlenecked, as many suspect, then the slightly lower shaders might not be a huge weakness.
Plus custom PCBs might offer additional OC headroom. The only drawback is that it is also 4GB VRAM limited.
As it stands though, the 980Ti SLI seems to offer the best gaming experience. The combination of VRAM, high OC headroom, and custom AIB PCBs is hard to beat. This is particularly true if it is something like the 980Ti Lightning, Classified, or HOF.
The only drawback with Nvidia right now is that the very high end upgrade route 3 and 4 way SLI frame timing is not good – while AMD’s frame timing in 3 and 4 way Crossfire is generally better. The problem is that it’s 4GB VRAM limited.
This whole thing was a non
This whole thing was a non issue. This site likes to make a mountain out of mole hill.
With the HBM memory and huge
With the HBM memory and huge interposer one could expect Nvidia bumpgate scale of problems. If it is only slightly noisy initial batch of coolers then good job AMD.
So are we looking at another
So are we looking at another AMD bait and switch? They cherry picked 290X review samples that performed better than retail if you recall…. How do we know these whine-less pumps offer the same cooling efficiency and won’t impact the dynamic clocking on the chip thereby affecting performance? Was thinking about getting one of these cards, but will definitely not do so now… All these “new” configurations sound fishy.
