Media Encoding Tests

Handbrake

Known mainly for its DVD re-encoding prowess, our test uses the Handbrake command line interface on a full DVD rip to gauge CPU performance.

Well that is impressive! In Handbrake, the Core i7-6700K is pushing through that H.264 encode faster than even the 8-core Haswell-E processor! Clearly the higher clock speed and IPC improvements are making a difference.

x264 HD Benchmark

The popular x264 benchmark available from graysky does a two-pass H.264 encode on 1080p video.  The first pass appears to be more clock-sensitive while the second pass is more heavily threaded.

(Screenshot shows 720p testing from v4.0, we are using 1080p on v5.0)

Our x264 benchmark is a bit more heavily threaded than Handbrake was and, as such, the Core i7-5960X is still the fastest part overall. The new Core i7-6700K is able to overtake the Core i7-3970X based on Sandy Bridge-E, however!
