Results: Unigine Heaven 4.0
This particular benchmark nicely shows the performance hit that we would expect to see with varied levels of tessellation enabled. I tested with it disabled, moderate, normal, and extreme. We should get a good feeling about how these cards handle tessellation under various levels. Resolution was set at 1920×1200, no AA, 16X AF, and High quality settings.
Tessellation is King when it comes to the Maxwell architecture from NVIDIA. The 970’s lead from stem to stern. They also see a slightly less drop with each level of tessellation as compared to the R9 290X. We again see that the Zotac card cannot really pull much of a lead over the less expensive MSI version.
I noticed the cooling fins
I noticed the cooling fins are vertical on the Zotac unit, is it blowing half of the heat directly onto the motherboard? Or is that not really an issue?

I wouldn't say it was an issue at all. In fact, the extra downforce might in fact help overall cooling on the motherboard.
