It has been long suspected that eventually Google would merge their two operating systems into one and we now have a rumoured date, 2017. An Android runtime for the Chrome OS already exists and almost any Android app can be modified to run on a Chrome powered device but we now have confirmation that the two will finally merge under the Android brand. The new OS will remain open sourced and programmers may be enticed into programming more applications as they would only need to make one application instead of needing to write two versions. Pop by The Inquirer for more speculation.
"ALPHABET SUBSIDIARY Google (still sounds weird, right?), is reportedly planning to merge Chrome OS and Android into a single platform."

I understand the desire to
I understand the desire to take on Windows, particularly on the low end in emerging markets…but Android has so many underlying issues, I have a hard time imagining this not turning into a PR disaster if it actually ships.
On the other hand they could rewrite the entire foundation of Android(like Microsoft never did with Windows), fix all the security issues and dominate the low end of the market. Given Googles track record it’s hard to imagine them executing on this, but it would make things VERY interesting if they did.
Just a couple more years and
Just a couple more years and Google itself will be merged into Android.
Wonder if it’ll support x86?
Wonder if it’ll support x86? or is this their run to make ARM more viable/mainstream for every-day computing?

Well the M$ spin doctors are
Well the M$ spin doctors are out in force, just look at your pre-spin for the big PC/Laptop OS monopoly! M$ needs to be forced out of the secure Boot key signing Authority before its too late, and the third party independent OEM PC/Laptop hardware makers completely fall under M$’s control! M$ is in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act by trying to use its PC/laptop OS(horizontal market control/market share) to force an illegal vertical market control over the third party independent OEM PC/laptop OS/firmware/hardware market! If you don’t complain to your State’s Attorney general and the Feds, expect the laws on the books to be conveniently ignored!

This story originated with
This story originated with the WSJ who has been doing some native advertisements for Microsoft, and there have been some other stories that approach native advertising that were trying to promote Microsoft over Chrome OS. The WSJ quoted anonymous sources, and I bet they were Microsoft employees.
The Chrome OS project is based on Chromium OS with just some licensed binary bits included, but with the push to open codecs the project will continue to exist in perpetuity. Chrome OS is one of the most secure operating systems with dual boot channel, verified boot, even firmware is verified, and background updating to the unused boot channel, and the kernel is write protected during operation. Given that its so robust and great for cheap machines for education, I just don’t see Google giving up on the platform. But Microsoft surely would like to prevent it from making more inroads into their business and keep regular people from adopting, who by the way waste a lot of money on keeping Windows PCs working who would be better off with a Chromebook.
Naturally the entire
Naturally the entire Technology Press, print and online, is beholden to advertisers, suppliers of test samples, and other conflicts of interest. It’s best to read from many sources and try and go with Full Linux OS builds rather than any ad driven ecosystems! Lets hope that Steam OS will be available on laptops, and Tablets, in addition to PCs! And there is a need for open source hardware and firmware, so maybe Valve can work towards that end also with their Open(as currently possible) Steam OS ecosystem!
