Of course, this quote doesn't include things like promotional images for games. It's a store, so it will promote its products. This is referring to like, Doritos. In response to Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation integrating ads in their service, Valve said that it doesn't make sense for Steam. It might make some short-term money, but it doesn't bring value to the user, it could harm the long-term relationship with the user, and it probably doesn't even sell Doritos.
Doesn't go with Mountain Dew.
In my opinion, it doesn't really matter. An ad-free Steam is nice, but I don't feel it would that it would affect me much as a user (although that would need to be actually measured to be a valid data point). I also think that its lack of effect is a fallacy. When surveyed, the vast majority of people believe that advertisements don't work on them, or just let them know that products exist. They're wrong.
I do believe that it would affect their long term brand perception with customers in general, though. Several brands have tried to get involved in gaming platforms and events, and the inevitable ads and product placement get ridiculed. It makes sense that Valve would avoid that, especially since their brand is what's keeping them on par with their competitors.
What do you think, though? Do you believe that you would mind? Or would you just shrug and ignore them (unless they're obnoxious)?
*Looks down from on high*
*Looks down from on high* Dirty console peasants, this is yet another reason that PC is the superior platform.
While it wouldn’t be the end of the world to see Mountain Dew advertising to PC users, I appreciate having a platform that doesn’t bombard me with ads. I think that’s what makes me feel like Stream is such a premium product. Sometimes it’s nice to get away from ads. Especially when you’ve already paid for the game you’re trying to load. I don’t mind the game ads, because that’s what I want to look at, but they would feel more intrusive if I started seeing ads for whatever I was just looking at on Amazon or Newegg.
I’m curious how this even
I’m curious how this even came up. Valve prints so much money from market transactions I kinda doubt they ever considered selling traditional olde ad space on their service.
I love gaming so have PC of
I love gaming so have PC of course, Xbox and PS.. The moment I saw the first ad on my xbox I turned it off and never turned it on again. I am a bit bias as I hate all forms of advets and do all I can to avoid them at all costs. I do not mind how valve does it, show me what games you have and whats on sale, that’s what I am there for anyhow. If the consoles did the same I might use them again but show me an ad for some car or other products and forget it.
So right now when playing
So right now when playing games on Xbone and PS4 they show ad? Like during game loading or the usual small tiny ad at the corner of screen that we use to see on many free android games?
Here’s the thing:
I don’t
Here’s the thing:
I don’t want ads. I don’t want ads when I’m getting “free” content and I don’t want ads when I’m paying for content. Ads are a great way to eliminate me from your base.
I had no idea that xbox or
I had no idea that xbox or ps4 actually showed ads lol.
That makes them even more pathetic garbage.
Ads are stealing user’s data
Ads are stealing user’s data cap allotments, and all IP providers should have to subtract the ad data consumed from the user’s total amounts. The IP service providers should make ads operate through a specific and specialized protocol/HTML that bills the Ad providers for the data used and not the user.
The nice thing about Valve’s Steam OS and Steam Client on these Steam Systems is that they are PCs in their own right, and the hardware can be updated while still allowing some users to have a turn key gaming platform with the Steam Client/Steam OS having a service that will keep the OS patched and updated without the end user having to get into the internals of the OS/command console mode to maintain their gaming OS. Steam OS provides all the usability of a dedicated gaming console for the inexperienced and a Debian based Linux distro for those that have the Linux OS knowledge to add other Desktop environments should the experienced Linux user desire.
The PS4 uses a BSD based OS, and I do not hear any complaints from its users about not having productivity software included on the PS4, while many fudsters are constantly remarking about Steam OS and Office productivity applications not being available, and every thing else under the sun that these fudsters claim is wrong with Steam OS. Well Steam OS is just another Debian Linux distro and what software is available on Debian based distros Like Mint/others! So the user can if they so wish install many other desktop environments and productivity software onto Steam OS! I would rather leave Steam OS in its streamlined gaming OS state, and dual boot steam OS with another Debian based Linux distro and keep Steam OS there for gaming with the minimum of necessary services running for gaming purposes, and dual boot Steam OS with Linux Mint.
Hardware that comes with Steam OS factory installed and the Hardware/Drivers certified to work under Linux is another advantage should users decide to go for a dedicated Linux Steam OS Machine. As the Steam OS ecosystem grows expect even more PC off the shelf hardware to have the proper Linux Driver support simply because the dedicated Steam Machines will be using the same off the shelf PC hardware and the OEMs and Valve will make sure that their hardware has the proper driver support and driver improvements to keep the hardware working for gaming.
The adds would work because
The adds would work because it target a known demographic. gaming gears especially. So if you have a new gaming mouse, where better to place an add then on a service used by million on gamers every day?
The issue for Valve is that compared to the 30% of the sale they collect on sales, making them hundreds of millions in pure profit a year, adds would not bring much in comparison.
You buy a game for $40, $12 of that goes to Valve…
So if you have to pay $12 to Valve and Valve make you also watch add on top of it to make more moeny… that would be insulting.
I personally cant wait for a free catalog service… I dont get why UBI, EA, the all other game company dont come all together and develop a universal open platform.
At least that 30% to Valve is
At least that 30% to Valve is invested in getting an Open Gaming OS/ecosystem up and running to prevent M$ from taking another 30% in addition to Steam’s 30%! And Steam OS will not have any ad-ware/Spy-ware baked into the OS, and UN-removable by the user! Same goes for those forced M$ updates that are adding more bloatware or removing more functionality at M$’s whim! Valve, and the Games makers are going to be developing the Steam OS/Steam OS Open Ecosystem for the entire gaming industry to use and improve upon, with all parties sharing the improvements and not using them for vendor lock-in like M$ and certain GPU manufacturers(A big Green focused GPU Maker)are doing.
wait dont you have to pay
wait dont you have to pay monthly to play online on xbox and ps4 why would they put ads if people are already paying monthly
I ask my xbox fanboy friends
I ask my xbox fanboy friends that all the time, they just do not get it.
I dislike ads in general. I
I dislike ads in general. I make it a point to avoid them and those that are obnoxiously presented are deliberately ignored. They never result in sales or increased awareness.
i prefer that steam remain
i prefer that steam remain free of those types of ads, but I dont think it would bother me nearly as much as it does on xbox live or windows 10 because i dont have to pay for steam.
Whoever thinks ads dont
Whoever thinks ads dont affect a platform and its users is severely mistaken. Ads not only tend to disgustingly commodify the experience they also snoop on the user and try to take over their attention. I am glad valve recognises this.
I don’t mind ads in theory,
I don’t mind ads in theory, but in practice there are way too many strings attached.
I wouldn’t mind ads, as long as they’re not specifically targeted to me, but the data gathering is so much more profitable than the ads themselves nowadays that that’d never happen.
In the case of Steam though, yeah having ads would certainly make the service seem a bit cheap.
Also, just because a product or service makes a lot of money from purchases or services or whatever else, don’t think they won’t ALSO put ads in to make extra money on top of what they already get out of you. See: Windows.
I don’t know what’s going on,
I don’t know what’s going on, but every time I visit this website, as of a few days ago, Avast freaks out. I wanted to see the content and was sure Avast was incorrect, but I’m wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this and if you know why it’s occurring. Between Your site and The Register’s site my security software has been blocking a lot of angler, and Magnitude Exploit Kit, MSIE XMLDOM ActiveX, types of web attacks. It’s all being pushed through the Ad scripts. This has been over the last 1 and 1/2 weeks, and I have never seen it so bad.

VT analysis for the ip address in the screenshot.
If its pcpers ip, then the site is hacked. If its a redirect from an ad, then their ad service is compromised.
Ad server, it is fixed now
Ad server, it is fixed now but please let us know if you see the issue again.
I would not be adverse to
I would not be adverse to advertisements on steam for such things that relate to PC gaming, just like I don’t mind ads on PCPer website, because they always seem relevant to the site. Motherboards, processors, SSDs, etc.
So when I launch Steam and I see an ad for a new gaming rig or mouse I would not be offended.
But please, NO Viagra or Cealis or Axe body spray ads. Maybe a Code Red diet Mountain Dew.
My original Kindle was ‘ad
My original Kindle was ‘ad supported’. It was very unobtrusive – the standby/off screen would advertise some book or whatever. After that Kindle got broken, my next Kindle was ad-free. It’s a tiny difference but I’m amazed at how it’s changed how I feel about Amazon and my Kindle. Now when I pick up my Kindle – *MY* Kindle – and it’s showing the default wallpaper, I feel like a fully-fledged, valued member of society, rather than a scrounging scumbag.
I associate ads with hideous, scammy sites and apps that can’t charge for their products or services. If I’m looking at ads, it’s because I’m on some dodgy torrent site, or Facebook, and feeling shitty about myself.
After a few years of Netflix/Spotify, going back to broadcast telly/radio is a kick in the face.
Ads on Steam would be a barrier to my launching it. Rightly or wrongly, I have this perception that consuming ads is for losers. I ain’t gonna click them, and now I feel bad about using your service, because I’m not holding up my end of ‘the deal’. Except for the ads on PCPer, I’ll click those all day long 🙂
I have never particularly
I have never particularly purchased something based on an advert, except perhaps a video game, if I am interested in purchasing something, i’ll research and look at products myself. Food adverts can be particularly irritating, although on a webpage or service I don’t mind. However adverts on video viewing/streaming sites are particularly annoying and warrant adblock for me, as most adverts are irrelevant.
