At $165 currently the ASUS Strix GTX 950 DC2OC sports the same custom cooler higher end Strix cards use and is overclocked by 141MHz right out of the box. That cooler helped Bjorn3D get the Boost Clock on the card up to 1425MHz and the memory to 6900MHz effective, not too shabby for such an inexpensive card. The real question is if that boost is enough to allow this card to provide decent performance while gaming at 1080p. See if it can in the full review.
"Naturally NVIDIA wants to cover all price points so they did a snip and clip on the GM206 Maxwell core and trimmed 256 Cuda cores off the GTX 960 leaving 768 Shaders on the GTX 950. You still have the same 2GB GDDR5 running across a 128-bit bus and 32 ROPS but GTX 960 gets 85 TMUs while GTX 950 gets 64 and those are really the hardware trade offs NVIDIA had to do to field a $160 video card."

On a budget, I would shop on ebay for a r9-290.
I think r9-290x can be had for ~$190 nowadays ?

yep….280x, 290, n 290x are the ones to watch imo. prices are bouncing all over the place (esp. when u factor in rebates). almost on a weekly basis. if i was on a budget or wanted to compliment a current amd rig, and didnt feel like waiting a few months for 16nm, then id be looking at these. stock is going quick tho. 280x has already lost a couple of skus over @the egg.

The strix cards from asus are so ugly though. Part of the reason why I’ve stuck with evga for so long. Simple and clean.
The 950 needs a low-profile,

and i would also like to see Nvidia, or either gpu maker for that matter (but team green has a head start in this area) push the boundaries of performance while staying in the power envelope of what a single pci express lane can deliver.
i dont think im the only one who was excited at what the 750ti was/is trying to accomplish. would love to seem them come out with similar products in the future.
950s as a whole are shoot in
950s as a whole are shoot in the foot from nVidia. Too expensive for what they offer. Let’s get real with that kind of performance 950 family should oscillate in the region of 125$ and not a cent more.
Situation gets even more drastic anywhere outside US or Japan with currency exchanges and various taxes. In effect you get 950s which cost equivalent of 190-220$. That’s idiotic.
Anyone with half a brain
Anyone with half a brain would use the 165$ to buy a used 280x instead.
What a nice ripoff…

What a nice ripoff…
