Out of the box the ASUS STRIX R9 380X OC has a top GPU speed of 1030MHz and memory at 5.7GHz, enough to outperform a stock GTX 960 4GB at 1440p but not enough to provide satisfactory performance at that resolution. After spending some time with the card, [H]ard|OCP determined that the best overclock they could coax out of this particular GPU was 1175MHz and 6.5GHz, so they set about testing the performance at 1440p again. To make it fair they also overclocked their STRIX GTX 960 OC 4GB to 1527MHz and 8GHz. Read the full review for the detailed results, you will see that overclocking your 380X does really increase the value you get for your money.
"We take the new ASUS STRIX R9 380X DirectCU II OC based on AMD's new Radeon R9 380X GPU and overclock this video card to its highest potential. We'll compare performance in six games, including Fallout 4, to a highly overclocked ASUS GeForce GTX 960 4GB video card and find out who dominates 1440p gaming."

Nice to see AMD’s GPUs
Nice to see AMD’s GPUs overclocking well, although this is still somewhat shy of Tahiti, which could consistently break 1200mhz at 1.3v and some of which could hit 1300mhz on air with 1.4v.
Hopefully the new 14nm and 16nm processes will bring back the good old days
One would hope but there’s
One would hope but there’s always the question of just how good will the new TSMC process be and how will it impact overclocking. We know that there were some issues with overclocking newer Intel processors (partly because of the change in TIM) so the same may happen with AMD/Nvidia. At the very least there should be a big boost in performance between new architectures, a die shrink and HBM2.
I usually don’t read HardOCP
I usually don’t read HardOCP because of the colors on the site, white letters on black background makes it hard for eyes. But I’m glad I don’t as every game they tested in this review is known to favor nVidia cards. Where is Far Cry 4, Battlefront, Shadow of Mordor, Dragon Age and others… Rly pathetic.
“white letters on black
“white letters on black background makes it hard for eyes”
really? i have the opposite reaction. interesting.
Even with Nvidia centric
Even with Nvidia centric titles that personally messaged Uber OC’d 960 comes up short to even the factory 1030Mhz of the 380X STRIX.
Newegg has the XFX Radeon R9 380X Double D OC (990Mhz) (R9-380X-4255 4GB) for $200 -AR $10 w/FS. It looks like these full-Antigua chips is making even the High-End 960 Customs look like really bad deals. The best price on any nicer 4Gb is a Gigabyte GV-N960WF2OC-4GD for $200 working a $30 Rebate.
