Not a whole lot to go off for this announcement. I mean, hints have been dropped, partners have made announcements, and leaks have surfaced for over a year at this point. The only thing that today brings is a release window: March 2017. The final name, exact specifications, and even whatever the thing is that makes this console different, are all currently unknown. Given that E3 2016 will be the last E3 before release, though, I expect that we will find out all about it in June.
Speaking of announcement dates, though, today is an odd one. Midnight (PST) on a seemingly random Wednesday in April doesn't hold any significance to me. Sure, it aligns with their earnings report for investors. Maybe a release date would help raise their stock price (or buffer its potential fall) but it doesn't mean a whole lot for its fans. Does that matter, though? Maybe not.
While this site is PC-oriented, we do touch on console coverage. When the WiiU launched, Ryan disassembled the console over the course of a five-hour livestream, which was archived YouTube. (He dismantled the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as well.) We are also interested in how AMD benefits from this whole arrangement. That company is one of the few sources for x86 processors, which gaming consoles have been flocking to, as well as high-end graphics. Combine the two, and you can get a relatively cheap system that is quite competent (for not having a discrete, add-in graphics card) at gaming workloads. According to AMD's previous earnings call, they secured multiple design wins, but we'll need to wait and see whether this is one, and whether it includes the CPU this time. As an aside, Nintendo also recently joined the Khronos Group, so that could eventually be interesting for our readers, too… or not.
I sold my Wii U a while ago.
I sold my Wii U a while ago. Cemu is worth every penny.
I wish Nintendo legally
I wish Nintendo legally attack the Cemu author for copyright violation since the source code is closed… if it’s closed it is likely the author has bad things to hide! Remember the Bleem! Playstation emulator…
Sorry but emulators are not
Sorry but emulators are not illegal. Sony also lost the law suit against bleem.
I can understand a lawsuit if the devs try to sell the emulator.
Stop being so hypocrite, the
Stop being so hypocrite, the majority of console emulators are used for conterfeit copy of games so called “backup copies” but even if you own a copy with right to use associated with, the copyright holder doesn’t allow you to download a copy from someone else online. Studios should put serial numbers in copies of video games and we’ll see if people still pretend they downloaded so called “backup copies” of their own.
I can’t understand Nintendo doesn’t protect its IP even if the author give the emulator for free but with closed source (probably hiding BIOS copy or anything else). It’s like giving guns in the street and pretending it would arm nobody…
For your information Bleem! has gone to bankruptcy so Sony won in protecting their IP.
Yeah… you’re not very
Yeah… you're not very convincing.
Emulators are not illegal, and nothing they said is hypocritical. Also, counterfeiting is a trademark issue, not a copyright issue. It is when you provide a product and pretend to be an official source, not using or distributing a direct copy of an official source that hasn't been properly licensed.
You’re right, I can’t
You’re right, I can’t convince robbers for stopping what they’re doing but Nintendo and its lawyers could.
You’re also wrong, conterfeiting isn’t only a matter of trademark since the copyright includes the right to copy owned exclusively by the holder which give licenses to use copies of its IP.
Actually your comment is hypocrite which promotes conterfeiting video games by using emulators violating technical patents related to video games systems. I’m almost 99 % sure you do not produce any valuable IP in your job if you have any job to pay bills out of your kid room.
Sure downloading games from
Sure downloading games from the internet for the emulator is illegal, but there is nothing stopping us from ripping our games that we bought for our own personal use on these emulators. Even under Canadian law we can do this.
I’m not a lawyer in Canada so
I’m not a lawyer in Canada so I don’t know all details of the canadian copyright legislation, but even if in France we have taxes on media storage to compensate non authorized copies (in order words illegal home copies that can’t be evaluated by any authority) which looks like a scam, it doesn’t mean that the copyright holder give you any license to copy its IP from the original media.
In a world moving from a commerce of physical goods to digital services such as softwares which conterfeiting is easy and cheap, most people thinks it’s smart for not paying IP but in the end authors wouldn’t waste their time to create any IP value.
All new technologies are based on IP and I wouldn’t be surprised if authors prefers to sell physical books than ebooks or DVDs than online downloads (without DRM), etc
If you are playing
If you are playing legitimately purchased games, then I don’t have a problem with that. Console makers don’t make much, if any, money on actual hardware sales. It is stupid to have to keep an older, underperforming piece of hardware around to play games.
Usually it’s a loss. The $499
Usually it's a loss. The $499 PS3 at launch cost $805 USD parts/labour. The $599 model was slightly above that. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 barely broke even at launch. The Wii was profitable, but the guts were basically Gamecube components.

Maybe with Vulkan and AMD’a
Maybe with Vulkan and AMD’a APUs some of that software/driver/Vulkan API driver/software stack support will find its way into the Linux/BSD OS based Laptop/Desktop environment. It all depends on if the OS for the Nintendo is BSD or Linux/other Kernel based, but there is a debian distro built on top of the BSD kernel.(1)
I really hope that Valve can get some future Zen/Polaris based AMD APU based laptop SKUs and get a Steam OS laptop OS distro up and running on them before 2020. The PS4 OS is freeBSD based also, so hopefully Vulkan will get more gaming support now that the Vulkan specification has been released, and is getting updated very often with fixes/tweaks!

Vulkan is already on Linux.
Vulkan is already on Linux. It’s in all the latest drivers from Intel, AMD and Nvidia.
I think Nvidia’s FreeBSD drivers have Vulkan. So what specifically are you asking for there? It is meant to work for X.org and Wayland.
I’m asking AMD to get some
I’m asking AMD to get some special pricing for Linux OS based laptop OEMs now that the Linux OS software/driver stack is beginning to produce results for AMD/Vulkan under some of the Linux/BSD OS OEM’s product offerings. To date there are no Linux OS laptop OEMs offerings for Carrizo/Bristol Ridge Linux OS laptop SKUs. There are plenty of pricier Intel/Nvidia SOC and SOC/discrete Nvidia mobile GPU offerings laptops, and I’m really wishing that some Zen/Polaris OEM Linux OS based laptop SKUs will become available before 2020 and windows 7’s EOL!
I have even considered getting that Lenovo Gaming Carrizo based Y700 at BB that comes with the FX8800p and trying out Linux OS builds on it, but none of the reviews of that SKU have had reviewers who would even check the device for the presence of a UEFI windows secure boot off switch in the Y700 Carrizo based laptop’s UEFI/BIOS firmware! Laptop OEM’s have had the option beginning with windows 10 of not having/providing a M$ windows secure boot OFF switch in any PC’s/Laptop’s UEFI if the device comes with windows 10 factory installed, and I may need to be able to turn M$ windows secure boot OFF, if any custom Kernel compiling/other compiling/patching is done that requires a new secure boot key to be signed.
I’m interested in the Carrizo FX8800P based Y700 more for Blender 3D rendering than gaming, so Blender can run under many Linux Builds, as I can not get the laptop with windows 7/pro, or even windows 8.1/pro to be downgraded to windows 7. I’m very ready to purchase a laptop from a Linux OS based laptop OEM if AMD can get any Bristol Ridge or Zen design wins with the laptop OEMs that cater to the Linux OS based laptop market.
Here’s what I want to see. A
Here’s what I want to see. A return of cartridges, but not in the classic sense. I want a basic and fairly affordable console with plug and play carts that can either just be the flash containing the game, OR be able to also add more ram, more GPU, specific function co processors, ect, that way the games can be produced for different costs with different possibility of workhorse power available to devs.
I also want a pony.
The video game console you
The video game console you describe is called a Personal Computer which is more evolutive than a built-in obsolescence device such as consoles. The video game console aim at depleting parents wallet since its configuration doesn’t require much expertise than PC. If video games are to expensive, parents should buy board games such as chess or Monopoly which are more instructive for kids than FPS or MMO.
Monopoly is horrible game and
Monopoly is horrible game and should NEVER be suggested as something to waste time ‘playing’
Play Carcassonne, Agricola, The Castles of Burgundy,
Eclipse, Le Havre, 7 Wonders, Dominion, Lords of Waterdeep, etc.
There are so many better choices with board games than Monopoly. Heck all the games i’ve listed and many more are less than any new console game and are MUCH better.
I loved Monopoly as a kid and
I loved Monopoly as a kid and I would recommend it since the world isn’t a fairy tale and it introduces to kids the lobbying power of money and private property. It’s like an economy school for kids!
Go to work for M$ then, they
Go to work for M$ then, they are abusing their Monopoly OS market control over the third party PC/laptop OEMs! I’m not going to buy into Apple’s closed ecosystem, and at least I can avoid Apple’s overpriced kit and closed OS/Software ecosystem. But that M$ Trust being in contorol over most of the non Apple/Google OS market place has/is going many times Google’s scrugle and Apple’s closed hardware ecosystem exploits. And M$ is doing its scam on the majority of third party OEM PC/laptop customers who really want nothing more to do with M$ closed ecosystem goals than those of Google/Apple.
It most definitely looks like Gabe was correct and that Steam OS/Linux/Vulkan is the only choice after 2020 and windows 7’s EOL for those that want an OS that work for their needs, and not the needs of some big intrests looking to make the users the product. I’ll never agree to windows 10’s EULA, it allows M$ to do anything no matter what plausible deniability M$’s spin doctors and friendly press calim at any current moment.
Enjoy your new gilded age! The elected officals are more bought and paid for in this time than for any other time in US/World history!
Do you just choose to ignore
Do you just choose to ignore what I said? What I was suggesting is a basic console where all enhancements and gpu, co processor, basically all the needed extended power was IN THE CART!!!!!!!! so that more basic games need very little hardware in the cart, and AAA+ games have all the extra power IN THE CART!!!!!
How the fuck is that a pc? Where are these modular power carts that pop in and play? What the fuck are you talking about? If you dont want a console, dont buy one. But seriously, how is what I described a pc? What the fuck are you talking about?
A cartridge with
A cartridge with co-processors and additive memory for only one game. Do you expect it to be cheap for kids? Why not selling a new video game console for each game? Your proposal looks like a scam…
“Combine the two, and you can
“Combine the two, and you can get a relatively cheap system that is quite competent (for not having a discrete, add-in graphics card) at gaming workloads.”
If you connect graphics memory directly to the chip, then it isn’t really an integrated graphics processor system. The idea of a discrete graphics card doesn’t really even make sense in this context. It really is better described as a GPU with integrated CPU. If this new generation of consoles is Polaris based, even the small Polaris, then it could easily outperform current mainstream, discrete GPUs.
They need to have a release
They need to have a release prior to Christmas 2017 in North America. If Sony and maybe Microsoft have updated consoles out before Christmas and Nintendo doesn’t, then I don’t think Nintendo is going to have very good sales.
Man I really wish Nintendo
Man I really wish Nintendo just comes out with a “real” console again. The Wii was fun but only ever used it for multiplayer/party games as the motion controls were never appealing to me for single player stuff. Wii U is even worse, the giant tablet control is just bananas. I enjoy Smash Bros and Mario Kart on it but I use gamecube controller for smash and whatever “pro” controller in Kart. The funny thing is that aside from the awful screen, size, and weight of that tablet controller the buttons, stick, shoulder triggers are all better than the competition, IMO.
If they could release a console in-line with PS4 specs with a “normal” control I would be full in 100%. My dream would be a modified Gamecube controller, same big A button layout, same triggers but add secondary LB and RB buttons (already has that “z” button on the one side) and make the C-stick a proper second analog stick and you pretty much have the perfect controller. I can dream, can’t I?
This is too soon.
As someone
This is too soon.
As someone who owns a WiiU, I don’t feel that I’ve gotten anywhere near the value out of the console with the ~3 interesting games that Nintendo has released. In fact, since I moved in January 2015 its been sitting unpacked because nothing of interest has come out during that period.
I definitely won’t be buying the NX.

AMD can easily complete a true a computer on a chip.
They have expertise and IP at all levels.
If you move the Ps4 GDDR5 on the die, like on fiji,
you get something pretty amazing happening already.
And if you move to 14nm, the power/ TDP drop dramatically.
Zen/ Polaris / HBM2 , 14nm, and all the SoC goodies (DSPs and IOs)
Do you realize that new
Do you realize that new printing processes aren’t as efficient than previously ones?
In fact, the only thing that you could ever hope is a shrinking of the die but no longer a better power efficiency since new transistor gates leaks more than ever with tricks like multigates to get a 14 nm printing process.
As a result, a new chip design is more relevant than a new printing process since founders reached the silicon limits and printing R&D cost rises exponentially.
