So TrendMicro has published a blog post that lists two unpatched vulnerabilities that affect QuickTime for Windows. Worse? They announced that Apple will no longer provide security updates for that software, either. These exploits will continue to exist until you uninstall the software (unless Apple has an abrupt change of heart). Basically, uninstall the software.
OSX users are unaffected. QuickTime is still supported on that platform.
For most users? This shouldn't be a big deal. There really isn't anything that the free QuickTime Player does which cannot be accomplished with VLC. Then again, I'd expect that many of those users (who would also be reading our website) have already moved on.
QuickTime Pro and Adobe users will likely be more affected by this. The formats and utilities that Apple provided are very useful in professional applications. For instance, QuickTime is one of the only reliable video formats (unless something came up that I was unaware of — correct me if I'm wrong) that had an alpha channel for transparency. This allows you to share translucent footage between applications without resorting to some frame-by-frame solution, like a PNG sequence. It is also required to handle QuickTime footage in Adobe Premiere, if you need to collaborate with a Mac user or you have QuickTime-centric hardware.
This is mighty annoying of Apple, but that's a downside of relying upon proprietary software.
Who in the actual FUCK uses
Who in the actual FUCK uses QuickTime in 2016?
Apple fags? Maybe, but who gives a shit about them. Anyway, good find Scott.
Pretty much the only time I
Pretty much the only time I use it is when Adobe Creative Something-or-other tells me that I need it for some animation thing. Used to be good to stitch together transparent PNGs into an animation, though.
Sucks for the Windows people who use an expensive camera that outputs MOV files, though.
I dunno man, I do a LOT of CS
I dunno man, I do a LOT of CS stuff. I’ve never got the prompt for QuickTime anything. Now, I get STUPID CC Manager Messages all the time. And, going from one workstation to another isn’t nearly as awesome as it should be with the whole cloud thing.
Apple can’t program for
Apple can’t program for Windows anyways. iTunes still runs like absolute shit on Windows. At least Microsoft tries when they port software over to Apple’s services.
Yeah, that was a
Yeah, that was a long-standing complaint about Apple. During the big DEP switch, which is hardware-enforced virus protection on AMD (and later Intel) CPUs, QuickTime routinely crashed because it was executing from a data buffer.
In my experience, iTunes runs
In my experience, iTunes runs like shit on OS X too.
is this why osx is still
is this why osx is still stuck on version 10?
Adobe take note. This is how
Adobe take note. This is how you do it. Die Flash Player, die.
Yup, time to go back to
Yup, time to go back to RealPlayer
Crap, I actually use
Crap, I actually use QuickTime to support MP4/M4A formats for Sony Vegas.
But really, that’s the only reason why I have QuickTime installed.
Yay, good riddance to
Yay, good riddance to QuickTime. Now this needs to happen with Adobe Flash (all sites including this one that still have Flash content embedded need to dump it immediately!).
If you fully disable Flash,
If you fully disable Flash, our carousel switches to an HTML5 version (which looks a bit different but functions the same). If you use "click to activate," though, it asks you to activate Flash rather than present the HTML5 version. Not sure why…
Shouldn’t the next step
Shouldn’t the next step towards removing flash on PCPer be reversing that logic? Make HTML5 the default with Flash as a fall-back?
I didn’t know that this
I didn’t know that this rubbish still exists. I have ~10 short clips (ancient trailers) in mov format an that’s about it.
QT no more, hooray for that! Let’s $tinky Apple choke on it.
If you like to drag and drop
If you like to drag and drop your music into iTunes you need quicktime.
Ehh kinda sucks for Apple
Ehh kinda sucks for Apple after they just went through the whole we stand for security let’s fight the FBI deal. Now there is a published security flaw and they just refuse to to do anything about it. But yes iTunes or anything Apple never worked with Windows. Opening iTunes take every available resource to get it open and even then it’s a crap shoot if it will load.
Quicktime used to be bundled
Quicktime used to be bundled with (and a requirement to install) itunes, at least in the last itunes version I installed which was admittedly as couple of years ago. It was a stupid requirement in the first place as it just used Directshow anyway (and you could unpack the itunes installer, remove Quicktime, then manually install itunes and its services without issue) and accomplished little more than screwing up your existing codec chain, but if they’re phasing out Quickjtime then presumably it must have been removed from itunes too.
