It seems that taking inspiration from those nasty popups where the X button does not actually close the window was a bad idea for Redmond and thankfully they have listened to reason. No longer will clicking the X on the Win10 nag screen be construed as accepting the upgrade as long as it is a Roman numeral, but will once again return to the clost command which it represents on any and all other windows. The Inquirer was more than a little miffed about this which is perfectly understandable as this particular step was far beyond the pale, the other attempts to forcibly upgrade ranged from reasonable to annoying but this one was just wrong. Thankfully Microsoft has listened and once again it will go back to asking you for a date repeatedly, until you remove KB2952664, acquiesce to its advances or hold out past July 29th when you will have to pay $120 to hang out with it.
"Microsoft has now responded to "customer feedback" and agreed to change the behaviour of the 'X' button back to the more 'piss off' tone that we all know and love."

KB3035583 is the main one
KB3035583 is the main one along with KB2952664 and others that need to be unchecked and hidden, many times over! M$ just keeps trying to re-KB these same KBs with all the nag, and it’s up to the user to keep on top of these nagware KBs and remove them if installed, and keep them from being re-installed!
I’ll have none of that! And I’ll only install the KBs clearly marked as for security only, but even that can still result in some unwanted KBs slipping in under the RADAR! M$ is not doing so well in the phone market, and thus M$ thinks it must turn the productive PC desktops of windows 7 into the windblows 8/10 TIFKAM/UWP phone like abominations that I’ll never accept on my PC/Laptop hardware. So 7 is the last of the M$ desktop Mohicans, and After 2020 there will be many more TuxBird OS distros, and TuxBird based VMs with which to safely lock down a windows 7 image for any legacy desktop software that needs 7 after that 2020 EOL!
The little x in the upper right of the window means no to the abomination that is GWX, and that windows X with its EULA directly from the pits of Hell, so Hell no to you and your windows X, M$!!!
I have GWX installed on
I have GWX installed on Windows 7. Works very well. There is another program called “Never10” that is suppose to work well too.
In theory I’d like to upgrade to 10, mainly for gaming and DX12. I won’t be doing that anytime soon due to all the problems and privacy issues.
This is one of the few tech sites that reports on this stuff. Most others I read pretty much say if your a gamer get Windows 10 now.
Thanks to PCPerspective for posting all information about Windows 10, good and bad.
Oh, when is your next contest? I’d like another shot at winning something 🙂
Yes, Never10 works really
Yes, Never10 works really well. Steve Gibson should add a prompt to restart the machine once it’s enabled though. Some casual users might not know that the computer needs to be restarted for the changes to take effect.
Windows 7 and Vulkan is all
Windows 7 and Vulkan is all I’ll need for a long, long, ***LONG*** time. Windows 10 is 1 step forward for 10 steps back with no truly valuable innovation that benefit ***ME***.
Historians will remember M$ last 2-3 years Orwellian strategy as the best way to commit business suicide.
I hope you are correct on all
I hope you are correct on all counts. Vulkan does look very promising.
I think that Windows junkies
I think that Windows junkies deserve this.
Just got a call from my Mum
Just got a call from my Mum saying she turned on her PC yesterday morning and she had Win 10 installed without her knowing. Peeved her off pretty bad and borked a bunch of programs. Should have set up GWX control panel! I have to go see if I can troubleshoot Win 10 or see if I can get a roll back to work. Grrr
I think you should be able to
I think you should be able to go back to Windows 7 fairly easily. After you do, yes definitely use GWX CP or Never10.
Administrators shouldn’t let
Administrators shouldn’t let users do wrong updates… but they should do themselves the good ones in time.
Microsoft? More like
Microsoft? More like Malwaresoft.
It still amazes me that no
It still amazes me that no antimalware software blocks or deletes gwx.exe. GWX is MALWARE. Are security entreprises afraid of Microsoft as to leave all computer users unprotected?
Who will pay M$ $120 dollars
Who will pay M$ $120 dollars for a garbage OS? Gamers will pay as much as M$ wants.
It is very difficult to control any kind of addiction. All addictions have similarities.
I am almost free from M$ apps except I need Silverlight 5.1 for freestockcharts.com website.
Had to laugh at this
Had to laugh at this reply…I need it for freestockcharts as well. How about linux and pepperflash or some other alternative? I’ve been looking around just haven’t found anything yet. Software from the broker…like Ameritrade or Fidelity might also be an option.
I’m no expert in linux, but your comment about games isn’t far off. I tried the Steam OS in linux and more than half my games we’re in my inventory as being linux compatible. I’m looking forward to making the jump solely to using Linux.
Good luck whatever you do.
I just rebuilt a computer for
I just rebuilt a computer for a business client because Windows 10 installed automatically, which they didn’t want. Windows 7 is critical for their business. Microsoft is so crooked. They should be sued the crap out of for the dishonest and crooked thing they have done. The “Get Windows 10” pop-up is like ransomeware and should be treated as such as far as I am concerned.

I tried Windows 10. No
I tried Windows 10. No problem on my regular PC. The one I use for torrenting TV shows in my wife’s native language downloaded and installed Windows 10 earlier this week, then decided that I really didn’t want those open, password free shares I set up, because they are insecure. No kidding, Microsoft, they are TV shows. I should have a person with carpal tunnel try to enter the username and password on the popcorn hour using a tv remote because Microsoft knows best. If it was once, I’d set it up and forget it, but every time you browse to the share? Nope.
The next torrenting PC will run linux. I have better things to do than fight with Redmond.
I really don’t understand how
I really don’t understand how something akin to malware tactics could be approved for implementation, a truly staggering blunder. Microsoft certainly aren’t doing themselves any favours image-wise with these kinds of shady tactics. It doesn’t bode well for future decisions at the company, when something like this could be approved.
You know it’s bad when non-tech news sites start reporting on the story, the first I read about it was on Tuesday at BBC News;
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36367221
I got a little “2in1” w8.1 tablet at the end of 2015, and hadn’t had any w10 popups (although I did have the GWX icon under hidden icons). Only now this week have I started to see the pop-up windows. Will be keeping it on 8.1 though, as it has a bluetooth keyboard that apparently doesn’t play nice with w10. The main gaming PC will be upgraded from 7 to 10 in July, basically for DX12 and nothing else.
My experience with my old test laptop on w10 certainly didn’t warm me up to the OS, although to be fair post release has been pretty stable (the preview builds seemed to have one issue after another). One thing seemed pretty consistent though, I kept classic shell installed as the new start menu and search seemed pretty choosy whether it would work or not on that day.
I think Aegis for Windows
I think Aegis for Windows 7/8.x is a solid program. I haven’t tried the others mentioned, but Aegis keeps the program up to date and handles about every type of telemetry nonsense that Windows is incorporating into Windows 10.
I think the latest edition is 1.18. It’s worth a shot, it’s worked on every install I’ve used it on. Although, I would recommend waiting until after ALL updates are installed before running it. After the initial time I run it, I run it every week or so after that to catch anything that has slipped through.
I’d prefer to just use linux, need a better solution than what Microsoft is offering. Everyone I’ve been reading keeps saying that Windows 10 isn’t better than 7, but I still don’t see ANYTHING that makes these newer versions better than XP. Direct X is an argument, but I consider that to be a joke, I still play games in DirectX 9 and can’t really see the difference between these and the newer versions.
Mafiasoft is now the distributor of malware and ads. Something, I never thought I’d see.
