Having already read through Ryan's review of the RX 480 while listening to Raja on the live stream you might be curious what others thought of the card. Perhaps there was one of your preferred configurations or games we did not cover or maybe you just love to read. Do not worry as there are plenty of reviews to test out. You could start over at [H]ard|OCP, who test power usage and performance with a different technique, before moving on to other hardware sites.
"AMD's next generation GCN GPU is here! We review the AMD Radeon RX 480 and find out what kind of gaming experience it provides at 1080p and 1440p. We compare apples-to-apples with four other video cards to find out how it compares at both resolutions. We even find out how high it will overclock! Waited for benchmarks, right?"

Interesting how each site
Interesting how each site seem to paint a different picture.
But I like Guru3D grouping. Dx12 vs Dx11
The take away:
– RX 480 is equal or faster then a GTX 980 in all Dx12 titles.
– RX 480 is equal to or 15% slower then a GTX 980 in all Dx11 titles.
For a $199 card that is not bad at all.
But from other review, you get the feeling that the card barely match a GTX 970, and is always slower then a R9 290.
If I where to only read the Guru3D review, I would come out saying.
“the RX 480 is an AMAZING card, at $199 is simply untouchable”
For me its the RX 480… and the next card up is the GTX 1070.
The GTX 980 is now discounted at $295… but because its weak in Dx12, and doesn’t always win with Dx11 the extra $95 is not worth it.
There is a gap between the $200 RX 480 and the $400 GTX 1070.
We need a ~$300 card that sit in between the rx 480 and the gtx 1070 as the performance gap, and price between the two is so massive.
Actually the RX480 is a $239
Actually the RX480 is a $239 card (as everyone tested the 8GB).
Different reviewer get different results, which is natural since they run test on different machines and in different game scene (and choosing one is one of the hardest things for reviewers), that’s why cross-source comparison is worthless.
I personally have a mixed feeling about that card, I’m really curious to see how NVIDIA will respond.
P.S.
The RX 480 compared to the GTX 980 in DX12 is faster only (and not even at every resolution tested) with Hitman which, I’m pretty sure you agree with me, it’s a poor port from console to pc
-It doesn’t overclock
-it
-It doesn’t overclock
-it consumes too much current
-it overheats (even on open benches)
-it’s gtx970 with AMD’s GCN architecture and 14nm process
-hardly any price difference between rx480 and gtx970 in europe
-gtx970 overclocks really well
-rx480 can possibly damage motherboards (PCIE issue)
-is it a failure?
It’s only a few test units,
It’s only a few test units, and the review sites’ testing rigs/methods/apparatus need to be looked at for that voltage issue, to make sure there is no reviewer errors. Read the AMD official reply on the issue, and don’t FUD a conclusion until the proper review of the issue is completed.
Reviewers who noticed those
Reviewers who noticed those issues have been doing reviews for years and are generally highly appreciated. Are you saying that they are incompetent? I am sure AMD knew about these issues as well, but they needed those extra clocks in order to shine in tests, although they still don’t beat gtx970.
So I did not spread any FUD as you claimed, I repeated the issues that have been found. I’m sure AMD can at later date release drivers that don’t let these cards boost to 1266 that much, so that will eventually solve the problem, I’m sure. But when AMD does so rx480 will lose few fps in games and other benchmarks. In the mean time these issues are real and they also represent the fundamental problems in rx480.
I don’t really care what companies say in their press releases about these kind of matters. Information is there. Learn from it yourself.
So if the reviewers are
So if the reviewers are competent and AMD is saying they are wrong then you have to believe either AMD’s engineers are incompetent or they are lying. Given how big an issue this would be for AMD on launch day I tend to think the reviewers got it wrong as AMD has much to lose and they knew exactly what the specs were for the hardware and what limits they needed to put in.
You are nearly there.. All
You are nearly there.. All that is needed now is acceptance..
Critical thinking is forming, evolving, but can it see the light of god. If it does, I will testify your accomplishment, my brother, I will go to the highest of mountains and sing ever so loudly that thou have seen the truth and now speak with the way of true wisdom. Keep on pushing, don’t give up now…
The GTX 970 is being phased
The GTX 970 is being phased out, it only has 3.5GB of usable VRAM, and in a year the RX 480 will be closer to performance to the GTX 980 on reference and probably past it with AIB 480’s.
I would never in a million years recommend a last-generation Nvidia card if you’re planning on keeping it for long, GCN cards age like wine (more than likely because there were so many rebrands and AMD is so slow to update drivers)
Example of this being 290X>780 Ti
270X>GTX 760
etc, etc.
The same will happen with the 300 series and Fiji, and the same will happen with the 400 Series.
Not to mention that on DX12 the RX 480 is above the GTX 980 but that’s a given.
Nice, everybody has reviews
Nice, everybody has reviews right after the NDA is over, but more testing needs to be done with weaker CPUs! Please test weaker CPUs/SOCs and the RX 480 so users can see if Polaris GCN/Async and DX12/Vulkan can make for better gaming on weaker CPUs.
Are the Bristol Ridge/AM4 motherboard NDAs over with NOW, or is this just for the Polaris SKUs? Als when will the Bristol Ridge/AM4/Polaris benchmarks be coming?
And no one did in depth test
And no one did in depth test of the clocking/voltage.
I run my r9-290x 10% lower then stock to gain 30% power reduction. (and a lot less heat)
Still faster then a GTX 970, and was so cheap on ebay after the bitcoin craze.
It would be wild if the RX 480 can be clocked just a little lower to reduce voltage so it never draw more then 75w of the pcie bus…
When will the Bristol
When will the Bristol Ridge/AM4/Polaris benchmarks be coming? What about AM4 motherboards, are we there yet?
What about AM4 motherboards, are we there yet! Are we there yet! Are we there yet!…
I think this case scenario
I think this case scenario will be worst for AMD at least judging by tests done with Fiji against Maxwell
hearing about what AMD was
hearing about what AMD was planning for the 480, i had few hopes, AMD to :
-nail the performance around 390X
-have great efficiency, to get rid of the last gen stigma
-have some overclocking headroom, same to have a change from last gen
-great price point
well they delivered on price, but failed for the rest.
my guess performance was sub 970 so they pushed the clock out of the power envelope of the card, and dissimated it’s overclocking ability, was it worth it though ?
i would rather have a disapointing performing card, than see them do this.
can AIB with custom PCB change any of this ? does extra 6 or 8 pin allow more overclocking headroom ? and if it does at what power draw ?
i was expecting 120-130watt typical gaming, but i see some reviews with 150-160watt, and minimal overclock catapulte it to 200watt…WTH
i hope some of it’s issues can be solved with drivers, quite to underclock reference cards.
Would have been an excellent
Would have been an excellent card last summer.
“the RX 480 is an AMAZING
“the RX 480 is an AMAZING card, at $199 is simply untouchable”
The review cards are all 8gb versions, therefore it’s not $199, please correct yourselves lads!

THIS JUST IN, GAY AMD
THIS JUST IN, GAY AMD HARDWARE IS GAY AF, MEDIOCRE AT BEST AND SO CHEAP, MADE SO POORLY, THEYRE SURE TO FAIL BY THE BOATLOAD.
FUUUUUUUCK THAT. No thanks. I’ll take 2x 1080’s please, and actually enjoy my 4K Gaming Experience.
And you got the money for
And you got the money for those overpriced cards by giving some good B-jobs in Castro district! JHH says you give the best B-jobs, but he is still not giving you any discount on those 1080s! So get to blowing, it will take you the entire Castro district and then some to pay for the Green Team’s pricy kit!

It’s a great card for the
It’s a great card for the price. I was hoping it would be a great card without any qualifiers. It’s by no means bad, but like many others I was hoping for more.
I’ll wait for the custom versions to show up, and we’ll see if it’s the stock cooler or the chip that’s limiting overclocking. At 1400MHz this would be a much more interesting card than at 1266MHz.
Looking at the PCPer review
Looking at the PCPer review power drawn greatly increase once overclocked so we may have already an answer
Yeah, it’s not super
Yeah, it’s not super encouraging but we need to see for sure how the curve goes.
I wasn’t really planning to buy the stock version anyway, and the only game I’m playing at the moment is Mini Metro, so a couple more weeks doesn’t matter to me.
You’re all morons if you
You’re all morons if you think this is important. Get a life.
Where are the AM4
Where are the AM4 motherboards, did Intel threaten the motherboard makers in order to get them to not have any AM4 availability! Why no mention of any AM4 motherboard availability, what is Intel threatening to pull ads/review samples to keep the tech sites looking the other way! Where the F are the AM4 motherboards, on even news of the AM4’s availability date.
