IDC is predicting a drop in PC sales this year and put the majority of the blame on Microsoft and it's new OS. The free upgrade has not driven PC sales higher as HP and others predicted in either the consumer or business market segments. That is not the whole picture of course, as there are also economic factors involved as exemplified by a similar drop in sales of phones and tablets. You can follow the link from The Inquirer for a more indepth look at this drop and the causes for it from IDC and Gartner.
"That's according to forecasts by analyst outfit IDC, which claims that PC shipments will fall by 7.3 per cent year on year, around with growth in the market now forecast at two per cent below its earlier predictions for 2016."

It is too easy to blame
It is too easy to blame Microsoft for lowering computer sales. What happens when products don’t meet the consumer expectations? I assume the consumer keep his money in his pockets. Does Microsoft produce any computer like Dell or Apple? I don’t think so.

I have every privacy option turned off and yet M$ still tries to phone home via other processes.
I have called it spyware but I like your malware description better.

The forced bundling of 10 has
The forced bundling of 10 has kept me from purchasing any new laptops, and I have stopped my yearly new updating of laptop hardware. I’d really like to go with a Linux OS laptop OEM in the future provided that the Linux laptop OEMs embrace some Zen/Polaris laptop SKUs in 2017. I have plenty of Intel Laptops to spare in the closet to last me until way past 2020 and windows 7’s EOL. I really want to avoid M$/Intel/Nvidia for my next laptop purchase and get a Linux OS OEM based laptop with a warranty, and the much better AMD graphics options both integrated and discrete Polaris graphics that are tuned to use the Vulkan graphics API.
I hope that AMD is not going to be swayed by M$ to keep the Linux support out of their Zen/Polaris SKUs, so hopefully AMD will be getting enough Zen and Polaris/Vega business to not be totally dependent on M$’s console business. Hopefully Zen/Vega will be a big hit for AMD in the HPC/Server/workstation markets so that AMD will not be beholden to any one of its console customers for revenues and AMD will be supporting the Steam OS/Linux based gaming ecosystem so that there can be a choice for those looking to dump M$ for good after 2020.
Windows 10 has actually made the PC/laptop market worse and not because people can get for “Free” that awful spyware/bloatware/EULA from hell encumbered OS from M$. Most people are avoiding 10 like they avoided 8, and M$ is forcing it onto the new PC/laptop OEM hardware and people are in fact avoiding the new hardware because of 10!
My Intel/AMD GPU laptop/discrete AMD GPU is getting long in the tooth and I Really hate that the Linux OS Based laptop OEMs are only offering Intel/Nvidia solutions at the moment, but I guess that there may be some choices come 2017 and Zen/Polaris options.
Look for M$ to try to lock the OEM PC/Laptop Hardware to windows 10 with PC/Laptop hardware with NO in the device’s UEFI Firmware M$ windows secure boot OFF switch provided. And M$ is getting desperate, just look at M$’s attempt to lock the newer Intel SOCs/CPUs to the windows 10 ecosystem, for any users still wanting to use windows 7/8.1. M$ will stop at nothing to force its windows 10 brave new world onto the entire OEM PC/laptop market.
Boy do I understand where
Boy do I understand where you’re coming from. Although, I’m stuck with an HP A10-5750m/HD 8650g set up. Most of the linux distros I’ve tried just don’t run well enough on this laptop to “also” run Steam, so I’m dual booting Linux and Windows 7. I’m hoping the new round of laptops offer something(anything) AMD that will allow me to boot straight linux and allow to me at least play a few titles in my Steam account. Otherwise, I’ll just stop playing video games altogether. ANYTHING to avoid Windows 10, and actually Google and Apple as well.
I’m probably going to end up just building some desktop that is powerful enough to handle what I’d like to do and keep my laptop for what it was originally purchased for…mobile use.
I’m not a big fan of
I’m not a big fan of Microsoft myself, but I doubt that Win10 has much to do with the decline of traditional stationary PC sales.
It’s just the way that technology is moving forward – reality is, most people don’t need a desktop PC anymore, because they can browse facebook and do just about everything that the average person needs with just a smartphone.
Stationary desktop computers are more than likely going to be a thing of the past (again, for most consumers – enthusiasts, workstation, etc. are likely not going away for a very long time) as the whole industry seems to be moving toward mobile computing in a big way.
It’s not something I exactly look forward to because mobile devices are horribly locked down and there’s hardly any reasonable way to toy with them to make the devices your own but it is what it is.
That, plus CPU performance is
That, plus CPU performance is only going up by maybe 10% per year, so you need to wait at least 5 years for a noticeable upgrade.
I really like the recent trend for high-res screens (I have a Dell with a 15″ 4K display) but most people don’t care about that either.
“most people don’t need a
“most people don’t need a desktop PC anymore”
I think this is the end of invidual computers but every family need at least one desktop computer because the industrial production of computer parts is falling and the prices are rising. You wouldn’t afford to buy for your kids at the same time the next generation of video console and a laptop computer for school things. I forecast this will be the same thing for smartphones that are more limited than laptop computers.
The good news is that parents would be more aware of their kids digital behaviour.
Rather than the “end” of
Rather than the “end” of desktop PC computers, it’s more like the beginning of the desktop as a refrigerator or microwave; a long term appliance purchase, that you only buy when the old one breaks down beyond repair.
The smartphone market is starting to hit this wall too, now.
You didn’t read me
You didn’t read me correctly.
I used the word “individual” as opposed to “shared”. Due to the maturity of the computer business mainly by the lact of innovation from manufacturers, people buy fewer machines then the prices of computer and parts rise pushing the market toward desktop computers shared by families to be more affordable like in the 90’s.
Consequently, with higher margins the desktop computer business would be more dynamic and profitable. An other collateral damage, the video game business would be hit too with expensives next gen consoles at least for manufacturers if not for consumers.
I agree wholeheartedly with
I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment Butthurt Beluga.
Most people don’t care about Windows 10 “spying”. If they did Windows 10 upgrade adoption would be a lot less. Sales of Windows 10 computers would drop by a very large percentage, something like 50%,
While Windows 10 probably
While Windows 10 probably isn’t the sole cause of the decline it certainly hasn’t helped.
My experience: 4 home PC an 1
My experience: 4 home PC an 1 work having 7 ult, pro, 8 home.On two I reserved win 10 but ALL PC ended with downloaded 4-5GB of Win10 installation! No question at all!!! I upgraded only one, tablet running 8 home. What I can say about? New version of Win ME. Win 10 mail client is much worse than any before, not able to organize my Start menus (I group programs in folders like drawing, games…). SkyPe is disaster, crashes every few days. And much more! BTW, after upgrade I changed SSD and installed Win10 from scratch!
But different story. A friend of mine, a lawyer with very basic PC knowledge, metered ADSL connection with 1GB/month ended with INSTALLED Win10 after booting PC! After everyday notices about perfect new OS and clicking X ended with Win10. Result, not working bank app and no possibility of Internet banking! Call to MS ended with “you could revert to 7”, no refund on download traffic. She’s preparing to sue MS but in EU are no chances.
What to say, MS is doing this by purpose! They see Apple/Google making millions on apps and they don’t. Forcing UWA means ONLY installing from MS store and soon they will block Win32. Also controlling of everybody…
At he end PC and upgrade. My notebook is Core2 Duo with 4GB running win 7. I run serious apps (CAD) without any problems. Why should I spend any cent on a new PC? In last 10-15 years CPUs got faster but software is slower! Today SW is limiting factor, full of bugs and unoptimized! Take a look at Android – you need 4 cores to run it. Win is also going this direction using C#, UWA and visual tools so every x could make an app. Ok for app but not for OS! Linux? GUI written in Java?

I think that AMD’s
I think that AMD’s Zen/Polaris APUs when they arrive in 2017 have more potential to sell laptops with AMD inside, simply because AMD will offer better graphics at a lower cost than Intel. So I’m hoping that the Linux OS laptop OEMs will sit up and take notice of what Zen/Polaris APUs can bring to a more affordable laptop solution than only Intel/Nvidia options. The very reason that the Linux based laptop OEMs are not able to have a lower costs relative to the windows based laptops is that very Intel/Nvidia high costs added to the Linux OS laptop OEMs BOM. There will be an increasing demand for Linux based laptops the closer to 2020 it gets!
I personally think that AMD should try to get some 6+ Zen core laptop SKUs on the market for those that want to run windows 7 in a locked down Linux OS based VM(Xen/KVM) environment on a laptop while also running their favorite Linux OS build at the same time. For some users to be able to still run some windows 7 legacy applications, while allowing the user to run a Linux OS/Linux Hypervisor environment to keep the windows 7 instance isolated from the internet and still allow the options for windows 7 applications in need be.
There will be a lot of power laptop/Business laptop users that will be looking to get away from all the windows 10 spying, and forcing, for those SMBs that do not have enough seats for any M$ enterprise licensing agreements so the business opportunities will be booming for Linux OS based laptop solutions with plenty of CPU cores to easily run a Linux OS based hypervisor and multiple OS instances for cross OS Windows 7/Linux OS at the same time until the SMB’s mission critical software is converted over completely to the Linux OS based application ecosystem.

Is pcper just trolling for traffic now?
It is windows 10, and its
It is windows 10, and its spying, adware, bloatware, forced updates, and EULA from hell, all foisted on the third party OEM PC/laptop market to bring the money to M$ and its closed ecosystem lock-down! No matter what You M$ spin doctors claim about “OPEN” because it’s M$’s end game of total control with Its UWP, and the new lords of Redmond’s universal windows peasants! I’ll not have any new hardware with that Windows 10 and its EULA that gives M$ total control over the PC/laptop hardware! GTFO with your windows 10 and its EULA from hell.
It’s Linux/Vulkan and hopefully not too much Intel/Nvidia control over the Linux OS based OEM laptop market come Zen/Polaris APUs in 2017. I’ll be looking for a Bristol Ridge/AM4 motherboard/Linux OS based gaming system with Polaris RX 480 GPU/s and looking to update to Zen at the end of this year.
Shove it M$! with your windows 10 and its EULA to serfdom, right back up your dark side from which it came!
So, where are all these sales
So, where are all these sales of computers without Windows installed? Yeah there is more negativity towards MS and Windows these days, and a few people have bought other OSes because of it, but if it were Win 10’s fault then the sales would have shifted, not dropped.
