ASUS and MSI accused of
ASUS and MSI accused of sending modified cards to the press

omg, stop talking crap , I
omg, stop talking crap , I just listened to some absolute crap from PC perspective. Now in stock .net says it all, IT WAS A PAPER LAUNCH. The die size at 16nm finfet for GP104 is not giving high yields as yet. Nivida is about having the top end and this shrink to 16nm at this die size was a risk. AMD going from smaller die up, which is the way to do it on the new process.
28nm had serious yield issues
28nm had serious yield issues too, in fact it’s a common issue with a major die shrink.
smaller die up isn’t necessarily the way to do it. NVidia has a business plan which is working very well for them so i think they know what they are doing.
The profit from a GPU (the chip) is based on how many usable chips they make however they also COST a lot more to buy, and in addition they still use chips for lower tier GPU’s.
In fact, starting with a LARGER GPU then disabling portions (the GTX1070 is a GTX1080 with 25% of its core processing disabled) is common practice.
AMD’s plan may be suitable for them but it hardly means you should always start with whatever GPU produces the most yields. It’s a lot more complicated than this, and again we’ve seen this all before at 28nm so NVidia knows what they are doing.
It’s hard to have stock at
It’s hard to have stock at launch. There’s gonna be a peak in demand at launch, and it doesn’t make economic sense to ramp production up to that peak, so you either wait and stock pile cards cards and launch later than you could, or you launch earlier and have stock problems. Best option is probably somewhere in the middle.
Personnally I like to wait a little after launch for better drivers, more versions of the card and not having to deal with supply issues, so it doesn’t really affect me.
A low stock launch is one of
A low stock launch is one of the few scenarios that retailers really make money too. So nvidia does throw them a bone by launching earlier rather than later.
Nvidia deserves a little bad
Nvidia deserves a little bad publicity for launching too early though. They didn’t seem to have much of any availability for about maybe 15 days or so and they have been trickling out since then. It sounds like they did not build up any initial stock at all. All of this BS just to launch before AMD, and they don’t seem to even have products in the same market segment.
I would expect yields to be quite low though, so total production may not be that high. How many cards is Newegg getting per week? It doesn’t seem to be many. The yields are obviously much lower than 28 nm; you are paying a higher price for less than half as much silicon.
how many cards were sold? Go
how many cards were sold? Go ahead, give me a number.
PCPER talked about this. If you don’t know the details then you don’t know if it’s insufficient product at launch, or simply that the product is in very high demand.
You say yields are lower than 28nm? It may or may not be true, so give me a link to a credible source.
Come on people, if you don’t have reliable information stop speculating.
Even if stock was relatively low why diss NVidia for their business plan?
Saving up a lot of stock is risky, and can hard to justify financially. There’s a BALANCE of what is optimal, and that’s assuming you can even predict the demand.
Plus, don’t forget that companies like Asus get the GPU’s and build cards. NVidia would have to make them sign a contract that says they won’t sell any units unless they have so money and that’s a hard thing to ask a company to do.
I cannot believe Allyn
I cannot believe Allyn Malventano said “I believe that’s what might be going on” in Reply to Ryan saying that maybe Nvidia cannot produce cards fast enough to keep up with demand. Talk about putting spin on something. Allyn you ought to become a politician.
Come on guys, get real. We all know that Nvidia didnt have a stock of cards at launch. They only launched the card on May 27th to get ahead of AMD for a bit of one upmanship. They Paper Launched their cards and are now drip feeding cards probably due to low yields and low supplies of GDDR5X which we all know hasnt been in full production for that long. Guys sometimes you really take the biscuit when sucking up to Nvidia. I honestly thought you guys were getting better and just giving us the facts, not the sauce. Bad Malventano !!
Don’t bring up Ryan saying
Don’t bring up Ryan saying he’ll take issue if cards at the $599 price point aren’t available with-in 2 weeks.
You could have seen the excuses coming a mile away from PCPerspective.
your spouting a lot of
your spouting a lot of details like they are facts. i doubt you have the full information on the design, tape-out, business plan for the GPU’s and memory.
I doubt you know how many cards were made for launch, or how many have been sold in total.
apparently PCPER guys speculating on things is only fine if it agrees what you THINK is going on with no solid information to go on.
PCPER is one of the most reliable sources of information for computing around. They do their research and have slammed both NVidia and AMD when they saw things they thought weren’t quite right.
So go ahead and provide credible links that show PCPER knowingly is misleading. I’ll start holding my breath right now…
Fury X’es with coil whine and
Fury X’es with coil whine and being slammed for lack of stock at launch…..I have heard that some 1080s are also suffering with coil whine. Can’t you see that Nvidia are having similar issues like AMD did. Same issues on both sides. However, you seem to be spinning an alternative story when it comes down to Nvidia having same issues.
🙁
The entire CPU/GPU/whatever
The entire CPU/GPU/whatever technology industry is the same as the railroads and oil trusts of old, with so much of the market under the control of so few companies, M$/Intel/Nvidia/ETC! And the internet has definitely not lived up to any of its initial promise. Most companies are run by MBAs and they employ the professional liar(Marketing “professionals”). The Internet is not regulated for content like the TV/Radio industries are, so it’s back to the snake oil salesman days again with the internet based websites able to work their dirty miss-information deeds unregulated.
It’s no wonder the Internet was able to garnish so much bipartisan support for all these years from congress(bought and paid for by the technology industries), it was because the internet was placed outside the normal legal system of federal agencies regulations. Now look at all the favoritism and cronyism, and cherry picked of benchmarking results, and review samples withheld for not kowtowing to the company’s marketing goals. Enjoy that Snake Oil, there will be more unless the Internet is regulated for fairness and accuracy just like the Radio/TV markets had to be.

Why do you think the most important news about Polaris where leaked to Forbes and Wall Street Journal? Because AMD had enough with the green tech press.
