The Wall Street Journal is reporting that AMD's upcoming Polaris graphics cards will be priced no higher than $199, a startling move to say the least.
The report arrives via VideoCardz.com:
"According to WSJ article, Polaris GPUs will cost no more than 199 USD. First systems equipped with Polaris GPUs will be available end of June:
'Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is angling to lower the cost of virtual reality, targeting the field with a new line of graphics hardware priced at $199—half or less the cost of comparable products.
AMD said the first chips based on its new Polaris design are expected to arrive in graphics cards for personal computers at the end of June. The company aims to help push the starting cost of PCs that can deliver VR experiences as low as $799 from above $1,000.'"
The report lists the high-end Polaris card as the "RX 480", which would be a departure from the recent nomenclature (R9 290X, R9 390X). Pricing such a card this aggressively not only creates what one would hope to be an incredible price/performance ratio, but is likely an answer to NVIDIA's GTX 1080/1070 – especially considering NVIDIA's new GTX 1070 is as fast as a GTX 980 Ti.
Is the Radeon RX 480 really the top end card, or a lower-cost variant? Will there be a 490, or 490X? This report certainly doesn't answer any questions, but the possibility of a powerful new GPU for $199 is very appealing.

Just sold one of my 970s on ebay for $240…same power minus the company I hate (Nvidia)and a little profit to save for Vega sounds like a win for me!
Two hundred is about my price
Two hundred is about my price range, so as long as they deliver a good value, I am fine with that. It can’t be competing with the 1070 if that is the actual price of the full Polaris 10. I guess we may have to wait until Vega for a 1070/1080 competitor. Although, I haven’t seen any 1080s for sale anywhere near even the founders edition MSRP yet. I am still wondering if Nvidia made a mistake trying to go big and is suffering from yield/supply issues. I would assume that a lot of the market actually buys in the $150 to $350 range, so even without constrained supply of Nvidia parts, AMD may be able to make a lot of money. AMD may not have a high end competitor, but Nvidia doesn’t have a mid range part competitive with AMD 14 nm parts. The power consumption will be significantly better on the new 14 nm parts, even if they perform similarly to previous generation parts. The price would need to be very cheap for me to buy an old 28 nm part at this point.
Yep, those nvidia 10×0 cards
Yep, those nvidia 10×0 cards are vaporware right now. The only people who have them are reviewers. LOL

WOW! At that price how can you not pick one up! YES!
This is not promising. I
This is not promising. I would like something to replace my 290 with and it doesn’t look like polaris will deliver. I’d pickup a 1070 but nvidia refuses to support my adaptive sync monitor.
Replace it – judging by
Replace it – judging by anandtech and techpowerups coverage of the card, you’ll be getting better than 390 (and maybe 290x) performance for half the power – if you sell your 290 now, you may be able essentially get the 480 for free.
Have some patience young
Have some patience young padawan, AMD will release more powerful cards in the not too distant future.
At that price point, I’ll be
At that price point, I’ll be having one. Possibly two 😉
AMD Zen 6-core CPU + Polaris
AMD Zen 6-core CPU + Polaris 10 GPUs + Windows 10 (with DX12) games for a power user VR PC will be fantastic. AMD GPUs provide very good performance in DX12 titles.
NV fanboys want to give their money to the expensive company. That is fine with me.
Xbox 2 and PS4.5K will also use Polaris 10 GPUs.
Don’t forget that Polaris 10 & 11 will be very power efficient GPUs.
Do we know for sure that the
Do we know for sure that the Xbox “whatever” is going to be AMD Polaris based?
“PS4.5k” they gave up the
“PS4.5k” they gave up the most amazing chance at the perfect name for the first 4K system…. SERIOUSLY! PS4K would be PERFECT! but no. PS4.5 cause ps4k is too smart for a bunch of fucking engineers…

If true there’s going to be a lot more excitement Scott Polaris than Pascal.
If it’s going to be faster
If it’s going to be faster than a R9 390, they have my money.

Finally $200 GPU, this is the most affordable 1080p videocard.
Max out every game in 1080p
Max out every game in 1080p for 200$ THX AMD!
@$200 to $250, I will
@$200 to $250, I will definitely buy it. With AMD support for Directx 12 and the powerful Polaris card, I will have a 1080P maxed out experience without any problem. I admit that Nvidia 1080 is a great performer but I will never ever pay $700 for just a graphic card. In fact, I probably can assemble an entire gaming computer with AMD FX and Polaris card for $700 😀
I am completely down for this
I am completely down for this idea. Drop 200 on the card, keep my 4G 960, upgrade my power supply and with DX12 AMD and NV cards can effectively “crossfire” without any extra hardware.
Hmmm
AMD can only score a
Hmmm
AMD can only score a decisive victory if the 8GM version is $200. I get the feeling that the 8gb card is going to be $299. Given you can buy R9 390X’s with 8GB for $360 on Newegg right now, and the GTX 1070 retails for $380, the R9 480 simply doesn’t appear that compelling to consumers Otherwise you end up with a slighly less powerful, slightly cheaper and more efficient R9 390X for maybe $60-70 bucks less. Not really earth shattering. At just over 5 GFLOPS in floating point performance this new card is about 10% less powerful than the card it is replacing. And in all likelihood, few people are going to want a 4 GB card to run VR. More to the point, it hardly seems likely that consumers contemplating the total cost to participate in the VR experience are going to be deterred by $80-100 and not buy the GTX 1070 when the performance delta is so great. Nor go to the time and trouble of buying 2 when a GTX 1080 gives you almost as much performance in a single card. Seems to me that NVidia has outflanked AMD again.
I’ve seen somewhere that the
I’ve seen somewhere that the MSRP for the 4G model is 199 and the 8G model is 230.
