The AMD Radeon RX 480 is set to launch on June 29th, but a VisionTek model was published a little early (now unpublished — thanks to our long-time reader, Arbiter, for the heads up). Basically all specifications were already shared, and Ryan wrote about them on June 1st, but the final clock rates were unknown. The VisionTek one, on the other hand, has it listed as 1120 MHz (5.16 TFLOPs) with a boost of 1266 MHz (5.83 TFLOPs).
Granted, it's possible that the VisionTek model could be overclocked, even though the box and product page doesn't mark it as a factory-overclocked SKU. Also, 5.16 TFLOPs and 5.83 TFLOPs align pretty close to AMD's “>5 TFLOPs” rating, so it's unlikely that the canonical specifications slide underneath this one. Also, TFLOP ratings are basically a theoretical maximum performance, so real-world benchmarks need to be considered for a true measure of performance. That said, this would put the stock RX 480 in the range of a GTX 980 (somewhere above its listed boost clock, and slightly below its expected TFLOP rating when overclocked).
There is no price listed for the 8GB model, but the 4GB version will be $199 USD.
Can we expect a PCPer review
Can we expect a PCPer review right around when NDA lifts?
So AMD created a slightly
So AMD created a slightly more efficient 980 2 years later but needed 14nm to do it???
Pretty lame.
They created 980 at
They created 980 at performance at 970 TDP at 960 price point.
Yeah, *so* lame.
So basically what you expect
So basically what you expect from every die shrink ever, good job AMD too bad they only matched Nvidia’s lastgen midrange….
Don’t forget that maxwell has
Don’t forget that maxwell has no A-sync support, with that the card should end up near a stock 980ti, and that you’re still saving cash on free-sync display should you go AMD, also this is the kind of card most people buy, AMD’s high end will be out later in the year along with the 1080ti
not to mention you can’t even really still find 1080s available for purchase because nvidia seemingly rushed the cards out as quickly as possible. Much like AMD did with the Fury cards.
Don’t forget a-sync was AMD
Don’t forget a-sync was AMD tech, look it up as 7000 series cards had it.
Let’s also not forget Async
Let’s also not forget Async is good for 5-10% and only needed bc AMD drivers don’t handle dx11 well
That’s not remotely what’s
That’s not remotely what’s going on there. First, it’s mainly DX12 where it will be implemented, and there’s a lot more to the asynchronous optimizations such as preemption etc.
They did some tweaking to GCN with Polaris to optimize this further though we need new games to demonstrate this.
It will work better in VR than NVidia’s GTX900 an earlier cards, and it’s at an excellent price point.
Being the fastest GPU is partially bragging rights. A lot more people will buy the RX-480 than buy the GTX1080.
And in the meantime until
And in the meantime until those DX12 games that don’t exist yet make it to market, everyone else will just buy Nvidia or keep what they have and not care about a feature that enables 5-10% performance on AMD cards that are deficient without it.
Hahahahha , you serious bro
Hahahahha , you serious bro ?! You dont care if you buy 970/980/390x/390 performance for 229 USD and knowing it will be getting faster with the time ( drivers optimization and those 5-10 % )FOR FCK FREE ?!
It will not be : Ok if you want to use async in games you need to but this proprietary add-on card in order to use it.
Don’t act like the blind fanboys ( both sides not only nVidia).
Pascal is ok but they messed up the prices ( MSI 1080X for 720 USD FFS ! ).
Don’t get me wrong , I’m looking for 1070 but with those prices it’s a no go. And this is card for the masses , most of witch using 1080p screens and like one of the guys said before freesync is … free
LG 34um68 and 34um88 – are great monitors for the price.
So tell me how buying a monitor and a card for the same money as only card is bad for the average consumer ?!
We are all watching Top Gear with the fancy cars , but you buy a practical one don’t ya ?
And before we see how it performs and what the response from the green team is calling it fail because its 980 performance – its fck lame !
This guy is probably paid by
This guy is probably paid by Nvidia’s marketing department to post anti-AMD comments. No point in arguing against a guy like this. Although I guess it will help to negate the misinformation that this guy is trying to spread.
You sound no better. This
You sound no better. This actually looks like a decent product that AMD is producing. If it has more availability off that back that alone shows that AMD was ready, where Nvidia either wasn’t ready or are controlling the stock. Because this price gouging is ridiculous.
I wasn’t too happy with the two pricing scheme they came up with. Seemed questionable at best. For once I don’t mind getting something from AMD that will be close to an Nvidia product (With overclocking in theory) and won’t break my bank.
I just hope the driver team is up to the task now. Can’t believe I’m going back to AMD this round. Man it’s been awile.
Just so you know, numerous
Just so you know, numerous sightings have been found with mass production of the RX 480, so hopefully they are correct and they’re ready!! Obviously take these rumours with a large few grains of salt, but most rumours lately have been true, hopefully it continues!
I’m planning on upgrading to the RX 480 and Zen architecture from my 970 and fx-6300, been almost 2 years so might as well 🙂

Stop spreading
Stop spreading misinformation!!!!
Asynchronous compute was NEVER only AMD tech. Anyone is free to use it, including Nvidia. It just so happens that Nvidia sucks at it.
Yeah, and AMD is free to use
Yeah, and AMD is free to use HairWorks. It just so happens that AMD sucks at it.
“It just so happens that
“It just so happens that HairWorks is a proprietary, closed-off module that AMD can’t look inside and optimize for, so even if it had code in it that detected the hardware ID of the GPU and deliberately destroyed performance on anything that isn’t genuine Nvidia, nobody could possibly know about it because nobody can see the code. It’s not that AMD sucks at it, it’s that it has been made deliberately impossible for AMD to optimize for it in order to run it decently.”
Fixed that for ya.
Remember Tomb Raider 2013 and TressFX? Remember how Nvidia cards ran like garbage with it turned on? Remember the furious uproar from you Nvidrones over it? Yeah, Nvidia sucked at it.
But TressFX (as well as the rest of AMD’s gaming libraries) is open-source. So Nvidia got the source code, optimized for it in their next driver release a week later, and OH BOY, suddenly Nvidia cards were BETTER at it than AMD’s were. Remember that?
And yet anyone who has a
And yet anyone who has a 780Ti, 970, 980, 290, 390, 390X, Fury, Nano, X, 980Ti for the last 1-3 years will give how many f@&#$ since they still have as fast or faster cards? Lol
But people that own those
But people that own those cards clearly aren’t the target market for the RX 480. We are talking about a $200 MSRP card vs cards that were much more at their launch. AMD has never said that Polaris was going to compete with top tier cards, they have said from the very beginning that it was going to be a mainstream product.
Except some of these cards
Except some of these cards weren’t much more, and this was years ago. 290/290X were selling for $230-300 nearly 2 years ago. 970 launched at $330 nearly 2 years ago and was on sale numerous times for $250-270 shortly after. 780Ti EOL’d at $300-$330 after 970 launched.
All similar levels of performance for just a bit more money, almost 2 years ago.
Reality is this level of performance at slightly higher price points was available long ago, AMD is just racing to the bottom of the barrel chasing a market that doesn’t spend until the bottom is truly scraped.
So when Nvidia releases the
So when Nvidia releases the GTX 1060 to compete with the RX-480, and sits in the same performance range (around GTX 980) as the RX-480, and in around the same price range as the RX-480, will you be arguing that the GTX 1060 is pointless when it’s a similar level of performance for just a bit more money, almost 2 years ago?
This new argument that Nvidia fanboys have adopted to dismiss the RX-480 as irrelevant really confuses me. Do you seriously not understand how performance categories work?
This generations high-end cards blow the doors off of last generation’s high-end cards and thus have high-end prices.
This generation’s midrange cards have the performance of last generation’s high-end cards, at mid-range prices.
This generations low-end cards have the performance of last generations midrange cards, at low-end prices.
This generations high-end
This generations high-end cards…….at OVER-INFLATED prices.

I was offering Nvidia the benefit of the doubt, and citing prices they will likely return to once Nvidia finally gets some supply out there.
nah yea, of course. your post
nah yea, of course. your post is an accurate description of reality. I was just being sarcastic/trollish. $850 though….dang. Not worth imo.
I don’t know if you
I don’t know if you understand math at all, but $330 is 65% more than $200. That is a huge difference for a lot of people. The RX 480 is going to bring that top tier performance down to an affordable level. I just don’t understand why anybody downplays affordability. It doesn’t fucking matter if Polaris isn’t the most amazing, blow all the competition out of the water card. It is going to be very affordable and offer amazing performance for anybody running 1080p, which is a gigantic majority of gamers.
People RAVED at how great the 970 was for $330, and they were right to do so. It is the single most popular GPU on the Steam hardware survey. Now gamers will be able to get even better performance at an even better price. What’s not to like?
Take in account that Nvidia
Take in account that Nvidia there prices have been going up, not down. If you where able to buy a 970 for 330$, good for you because where i live ( Europe ), buying a 970 for anything below 350€ ( 400$ ) even a year after launch was impossible.
I got my Nvidia 970 second hand for “only” 275€ ( 320$ ). Had a AMD 290x before, great card only had one disadvantage. Too much noise because of the power drain & cooling.
That is the problem. The lack of competition on the market. The 290/290x series was good but still too expensive. It just cost AMD too much to make them on the older process.
AMD there biggest issue is that they always wanted to fight Nvidia on Nvidia there terms. High end / high price … but Nvidia just has way too much experience with that game.
From my point of view:
The RX 480 is cheaper then when i buy my 970 second hand.
It has 8GB memory ( a 8GB 970 does not even exist ).
It uses less power ( reports are 100w on average ). My 970 does around 140 a 145 watts on average.
It faster then my 970
Did i mention its cheaper??? Like 230$ vs 330$ initial price.
Nvidia there new 1070/1080 prices are insane!!! The cheapest 1070 i can find in the EU is 470€ ( 540$ ). For the second level tier card, what is supposed to have the better price vs performance, its insane expensive. That is the price that you normally paid for the 980 when it came out, as a tier one card.
You can tell that Nvidia expected AMD to not have any card to compete and jacked up there prices.
In all honesty, two of these in CF sounds very interesting.
Hell, at absolute minimum it will push Nvidia to drop there top level cards. Do you not love competition? because i do … Fanboys be dammed i say. Compete!!! Bring out the pitchforks and fight…
Its about time there is again some real competition, instead of AMD just following Nvidia in prices.
I’m with you Benjiro. I’m
I’m with you Benjiro. I’m running a Cross-Fire R9 270X setup but am getting tired of spotty Cross-Fire support, DOOM being the final straw, so I was looking at upgrading to a GTX 970. It seemed to have the best performance for the price, where I could get one second hand for around $230. And selling both my 270X cards would get me close to that price. Now, though, I’m holding off for the RX 480, where it looks like ‘ll be able get a new card with better performance for the same price as the used 970. If anything, it should push down the used market and make the 970 cheaper. I’m selling one of my 270x cards now to get the best price in case those prices get pushed down too.
You neglect to mention that
You neglect to mention that the 780 released for $650 and the 770 released for $400. People need to start going further back than 1 generation to look at launch prices.
So like…80% of the market?
So like…80% of the market? Because ill be honest…most gamers, myself included, cant afford to drop $600 on a card and would rather have the latest features (generally improving with drivers) than a last gen has been.
Yeah, the GTX 980 was SO
Yeah, the GTX 980 was SO mid-range. Troll comment is trolling.

At this point these posts are clearly just astroturfing by whatever firms nVidia hires out to deploy their social strategies. Someone who expects a $200 card to outperform everything out there wouldn’t have the intelligence in the first place to figure out how to post to this site.
The leak so far show the RX
The leak so far show the RX 480 to draw about 100w gaming,
the GTX 980 is measured at 170w.
So half the price, 70w less power draw (less heat), more features
Thats actually pretty AWESOME!!!
Well, AMD actually implements
Well, AMD actually implements DX12 among other things.
Maxwell 2.0 and up support
Maxwell 2.0 and up support DX12 feature level 12_1. No AMD card currently on the market supports above feature level 12_0.

A 480 and a new Freesync
A 480 and a new Freesync monitor for me! 🙂
If you are like me , not fan
If you are like me , not fan of the curved panels I can suggest LG 34um68-P and 34um88-P ( the 88 has C ( 34um88C-P )variant without the Thunderbold forts for a cheaper price ).
According to AMD site , both have freesync range of 40-75
i purchased a 2560×1080 lg
i purchased a 2560×1080 lg few months back (freesync) adding the cost of that to the 480 8gb i intend on getting, and all in.. it is still cheaper than buying a 1070 at todays price.
dont get me wrong.. i love my gtx680 it has been a frikkin awesome card.. it still is, but newer games are just taxing it harder. seeing as nvidia are just taking the pi$$ in terms of pricing with the new cards, and as im a happy 1080p gamer, even if the stock RX480 only comes in at 90% of specualted hype.. i will still be 1 very happy space invader, who wont be feeling any butthurt over what i will have paid out.
Pretty much what we expected,
Pretty much what we expected, and only needs a 3% overclock to hit 6TFLOPs.
I suspect this one will be a good overclocker and should hit 7TFLOPs. Looking forward to the reviews.
You missed the important
You missed the important addition that AMD added Cuda cores to the Stream processors they have. So AMD have duplicated Nvidia’s cuda cores and added it to their GPU and still kept it to a small size. Amazing work. 😉
Cuda Cores…lol
makes me
Cuda Cores…lol
makes me feel like this post on newegg wasnt merely just a mistake, but rather just a flat out joke/prank
They are even making fun of
They are even making fun of that gaffe at the TechReport, but there are plenty of moron GITs on the gaming blogs to take the NewEgg mistake at face value! Ha Ha/ROFLOL on some folks and their lack of technology chops!
CUs(compute units) and CUs(Cuda whatever?), it’s actually CC(Cuda Cores)! Damn them marketing acronyms, and the really dumb Gits that fall for any marketing claims.
Going to be interesting
Going to be interesting watching AMD literally take over the mid – low end of GPU performance on the 29th , with a hard launch vs the soft stuff we have had from NV. 480-460 .. where will the competing NV cards be .. nowhere lol.
Yeah its not going to beat a 1070 or 1080 in dx11 games, i expect it will come close in dx12 to a 1070 however given reported oc potential. But less face it , a 220mm die was not ever trying to compete with a 310mm die. That’s Vegas role in things – demolishing the 1080 for less $$. If the 480 does compete then that’s absolutely great but its not expected at this price point by most sane people.
For 1080p i doubt this card will be beat.
reports say there will be
reports say there will be only 8000 cards for US market, since there is 2 versions of it I wouldn’t call that Hard.
I can bet ya 20 bucks they
I can bet ya 20 bucks they are more than 8000.
Also , what you are calling nVidia one month after release 1080 shortage ? ( just curious , it’s not meant to be offensive or otherwise )

The real question now is the
The real question now is the prices. If we see prices much higher than the MSRP, then many will end up disappointed, like what is already happening with Nvidia fans looking at Pascal prices skyrocketing. If prices don’t go much higher than the MSRP, I think Polaris will sell like nothing before it.

Even with enough supply,

Yes, you’re right. It’s obviously a fake image, because it’s completely impossible that it was a mistake by whoever typed the information into the form and then accidentally set the listing to go live. Nobody ever – EVER – makes mistakes like that, therefore this must obviously be a fake image, conjured up by some fanboy somewhere to make AMD look better.
Let me guess – you’re still swearing by that long-debunked rumor about Polaris being unable to clock past 850MHz while simultaneously dismissing the 1500+ MHz rumors as fake because people can’t trust rumors.
