Donning the leather jacket he goes very few places without, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang showed up at an AI meet-up at Stanford this evening to show, for the very first time, a graphics card based on a never before seen Pascal GP102 GPU.

Rehashing an old name, NVIDIA will call this new graphics card the Titan X. You know, like the "new iPad" this is the "new TitanX." Here is the data we know about thus far:

Note: everything with a ? on is educated guesses on our part.
Obviously there is a lot for us to still learn about this new GPU and graphics card, including why in the WORLD it is still being called Titan X, rather than...just about anything else. That aside, GP102 will feature 40% more CUDA cores than the GP104 at slightly lower clock speeds. The rated 11 TFLOPS of single precision compute of the new Titan X is 34% better than that of the GeForce GTX 1080 and I would expect gaming performance to scale in line with that difference.
The new Titan X will feature 12GB of GDDR5X memory, not HBM as the GP100 chip has, so this is clearly a new chip with a new memory interface. NVIDIA claims it will have 480 GB/s of bandwidth, and I am guessing is built on a 384-bit memory controller interface running at the same 10 Gbps as the GTX 1080. It's truly amazing hardware.
What will you be asked to pay? $1200, going on sale on August 2nd, and only on NVIDIA.com, at least for now. Considering the prices of GeForce GTX 1080 cards with such limited availability, the $1200 price tag MIGHT NOT seem so insane. That's higher than the $999 starting price of the Titan X based on Maxwell in March of 2015 - the claims that NVIDIA is artificially raising prices of cards in each segment will continue, it seems.
I am curious about the TDP on the new Titan X - will it hit the 250 watt mark of the previous version? Yes, apparently it will it that 250 watt TDP - specs above updated. Does this also mean we'll see a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti that falls between the GTX 1080 and this new Titan X? Maybe, but we are likely looking at an $899 or higher SEP - so get those wallets ready.
That's it for now; we'll have a briefing where we can get more details soon, and hopefully a review ready for you on August 2nd when the cards go on sale!
Price not insane? Price might
Price not insane? Price might not be insane, but you would have to be totally bonkers to buy that.
That is a beast… but for
That is a beast… but for compute does it make sense ?
Because it seem the RX 480 is a little over 50% the TFLOP, and also over 50% the bandwidth. And cost $240 for 8GB.
So wouldn’t it make sense to write code to distribute code over multiple GPU ?
I’m not dismissing this monster.. but at $1200 and ‘only’ 11TFlop, it seem very costly for what you get. Unless you absolutely need that in a single double slot card.
So now we know why they want
So now we know why they want to do away with SLI.
Nvidia seem to intent on putting their cards out of reach of their own customers. I for one have not purchased any of their new range of cards. Not because I cannot afford them, but because I am a little sickened by their conduct. The Nvidia TAX, general price rises across the board, and they also seem to be behind the Anti SLI campaign that seems to have creeped into the Nvidia friendly media.
Will wait for Vaga. I doubt AMD’s ability but without hope its hard to see a future in hight end gaming being nerfed by nvidia greed.
If ever there was a time for AMD to get their act together, this is it. I predict crowds of angry nvidia fanboys just itching to stick it too nvidia.
Nvdiots note I own nvidia 8 cards. 4x980ti 2×980 2×970
$1200? So maybe $799-$999 for
$1200? So maybe $799-$999 for the 1080Ti in maybe November, which means that 1080 will drop probably to $499-$549(if 1080Ti comes at $799) by that time. At least the MSRP and with a question mark if you will be able to find a GP104 close to it’s MSRP by then.
Also it will be interesting to see if in case of a price drop in a few months, Nvidia will drop the prices for both MSRP and Founder Edition, or just the MSRP.
I’d be kinda surprised if we
I'd be kinda surprised if we saw a drop in Founders ed prices. I think they'll just let the board partners drop theirs and let FE shipments taper off.
1080 just lost all of its
1080 just lost all of its appeal. Price drop imminent.
Maybe if this thing was
Maybe if this thing was priced at $1000. They made this thing $1200 specifically so they didn’t have to drop the price of the 1080.
Peak compute for the 1080 is
Peak compute for the 1080 is (2560 * 2 * 1.733) = 8873 TF, so just under 8.9 TF. Not 8.2 – that’s the base value of (2560 * 2 * 1.607) = 8228 TF.
New Titan is (3584 * 2 * 1.417) = 10157 TF up to (3584 * 2 * 1.531) = 10974.
100% price hike for 23% improvement. Cool.
Yep, its amazing what high
Yep, its amazing what high clock can do….
AMD 14nm process at 1.7 ghz would have ended nvidia.
A 40% faster RX 480 (same number of transistor) would beat a GTX 1070.
AMD badly need to up the clock rate of its 14nm GPU, this would be like printing hundreds of millions in free money.
they wont tho. the 14nm
they wont tho. the 14nm process is sub standard compared to TSMC’s 16nm. Apple showed us that when it made the A8 and the 14nm chips ran so much hotter, but were smaller. Nvidia will gladly take the slightly bigger die for consistency. with 14nm, you never know what your gonna get, and each fab (samsung’s, IBM’s, etc..) all do 14nm slightly differently.

Artificially raising prices?
Artificially raising prices? You all are under a misconception about how money works.
If your company continually makes something better from generation to generation, prices can only stay flat if the currency’s purchasing power stays flat too…
The US dollar, like most currencies in countries that engage in idiocy like quantitative easing and leveraged debt trading, constantly loses value.
Its not simple inflation and you cant expect zero price change along with innovation when the currency youre buying with is constantly losing value.
So it’ll come out at $1200
So it’ll come out at $1200 and be great until 3 months later when the Ti releases for $800 and has 97% of the Titan’s performance. No I’m not bitter about last year’s Titan X release.
When there is a 1080Ti, it
When there is a 1080Ti, it will most likely be in Q1 or so of 2017. Why? Because AMD has nothing to even come close to the GTX 1080 now except MAYBE their $1500 Radeon Duo card based on last years technology. Even if the RX 490 is a dual GPU RX 480 on a card, it won’t give the 1080, much less this card, any real competition. The only thing that nVidia has to worry about is Vega, due out sometime in 2017. nVidia will use the GTX 1080Ti as a stop gap between the time that AMD drops Vega and before nVidia is ready to drop Volta. Besides, you act as if either video card company never comes out with a cheaper card months later.
So this still isn’t the
So this still isn’t the fabled GP100 with HBM2 memory. So what is that beast going to be like when it arrives? And it ought to be positioned above Titan, so just how expensive will it be?
Sounds like Nvidia is continuing their evil masterplan of raising all their price points as they please. We seriously need AMD to be competing at the top end of the market to stop Nvidia’s run away pricing policy.
Another thought. I
Another thought. I understand Nvidia has Volta slated for 2018. So what are they going to be doing next year in 2017? I wonder if they have decided to hold GP100/HBM2 based cards back to give themselves something to release next year?

As opposed to the $1200 AMD
As opposed to the $1200 AMD R9 295 or the $1500 AMD Radeon Duo? Please! Enough with the nVidia is the only company that makes expensive video cards rant. It is really getting old and too easy to disprove. What next, you are going to whine about Intel and the cost of their CPU’s and ignore the $1000 FX-9590?

He has to make things up or else he doesn’t have an argument.
The problem with Dual chip
The problem with Dual chip GPU cards like those is that not all games will take proper advantage of both GPU chips and scale properly.
AMD still don’t have a single chip GPU product that can perform on a par with Nvidia’s top end cards. Now don’t think I’m some kind of fanboy. I buy whatever will give me the performance I want. Right now that is Nvidia.
But I WANT AMD to be performing in the same space, because otherwise without true competition between equivalent products from AMD and Nvidia, there’s nothing to keep prices down.
nvidia is sure good at
nvidia is sure good at keynote hype!!
Maxwell keynote: stacked VRAM and ARM Cores to assist with GPU rendering
Pascal Keynote: HBM2 and new form factor for consumer GPU.
Turns out maxwell arm cores was denver k1, and pascal hbm2 was for Telsa only.. They didnt tell us that, instead they made us think the consumer Gaming cards were getting these features.
Whatever volta promised, i’m taking with a grain of salt, because most of those cool features will be restricted to either Mobile GPU’s or Telsa ASIC’s
Mother of God! PLEASE come
Mother of God! PLEASE come out by the end of August. I will change my dual GTX 1080 and water block, bridge, etc. plans and just go with a single one of these.
I would love to get one. Just
I would love to get one. Just not for $1200! $999 maybe. $1200 there is no way I would pay that much.
It’s not $2000.00, so AMD’s
It’s not $2000.00, so AMD’s competition has had a slight effect of Nvidia’s pricing across all of it’s consumer SKUs.
And Really, “Donning the leather jacket he goes very few places without”, not so that’s only for show to make JHH appear as common as Joe Six Pack, but JHH is all Blue or Black business suit on the inside and plaid on the links. Oh look at me JHH says under his breath, They eat this leather jacket bit up Hook, Line, and sinker! Yes that’s the ticket, now go and hock your wife’s jewelry and get my pricy kit! It’s Bling Bling for the ding a lings!
There are no leather jackets allowed at the 19th hole at that very exclusive links, proper attire required! Oh the Dogs and Ponys from JHH!
I’m guessing now that the
I’m guessing now that the Titan line is being pushed to $1200, that the Ti line will not be getting closer and closer to $1000. Possibly $899? There’s no way 1080ti will be priced anywhere near 980ti, since 1080 alone is more expensive.
This is the evolution of a low competition market.
What prompted them to
What prompted them to announce Titan-X now? A good theory is that AMD is very close to announcing the release of Vega.
Let’s hope for the best. THe
Let’s hope for the best. THe 480 is a good card but not that good as AMD advertise ( I’m up for a Nitro for the holidays ).

Yeah for me the trouble with this thing is that by the time I save up the money for it Volta will be out. But then it really isn’t targeted at me, it’s targeted at those that don’t have to save up money to buy the most expensive hardware. 🙂
And who does Nvidia thing they are with that kind of price, Intel? 😀
