NVIDIA will offer a 3GB version of the GTX 1060, and there's more to the story than the obvious fact that is has half the frame buffer of the 6GB version available now. It appears that this is an entirely different product, with 128 fewer CUDA cores (1152) than the 6GB version's 1280.
Boost clocks are the same at 1.7 GHz, and the 3GB version will still operate with a 120W TDP and require a 6-pin power connector. So why not simply name this product differently? It's always possible that this will be an OEM version of the GTX 1060, but in any case expect slightly lower performance than the existing version even if you don't run at high enough resolutions to require the larger 6GB frame buffer.
Got to keep those margins
Got to keep those margins high, zero competition will do that.
A GTX 1060 that Has 128 Fewer
A GTX 1060 that Has 128 Fewer CUDA Cores, is not a GTX 1060, Nvidia better call it the GTX 1059.5 with 3 GB of memory, and at least it will not be 4GB of memory with .5GB unusable while the other 3.5 is being accessed. Man, Nvidia are masters at gimping and charging for it. Maybe Nvidia could call it the GTX 1060 Binner’s edition, as this is most definitely been binned. What an operation Nvidia has in place to segment for dollars.
That’s it in the future Nvidia will be chardging by the CUDA core for its GPUs!

I wish I knew why this guy
I wish I knew why this guy continued to hang around pcper and shit on everyone.
If it is really a retail
If it is really a retail card, it’ll likely will get same price as 480, and have same performance, and walla, a sub $250 card that all will find a way to justify the idiotic name scheme.
But most likely it’ll be oem because it is marketed as a 1060, one thing to have cards with same name from different generations, quite stupid to it in same generations of retail cards.
In the past has Nvidia ever
In the past has Nvidia ever showcased OEM product or specific for OEM ?
I cant recall. Usually they are pitched directly or thru distro.
Yes, there was a 760 Ti that
Yes, there was a 760 Ti that was strictly an OEM card.
Link to where they showcase
Link to where they showcase it.
There have been several
There have been several OEM-only cards, but the one I thought of immediately was the GTX 660. The OEM version of the GTX 660 carried the same name, and actually had the same 1152 CUDA core count as the GTX 1060 in question – but the big difference there was the original GTX 660 only had 960 CUDA cores, so this OEM version was actually between the GTX 660 and 660 Ti (1344 cores) retail cards.
The 6GB 1060 is already a sub
The 6GB 1060 is already a sub $250 GPU as it retails at $249. Having a few less CUDA Cores doesn’t mean the 3GB version isn’t a 1060. It looks to be nothing more than 1060 chips that failed QC for all the sectors, it’s a normal and common thing to do. They just slap half as much VRAM on it and it will likely retail around $199.
There really is no need to call it something else. Especially if they have a specific GP108 chip to use for the 1050.
Then why not call it 1050 Ti
Then why not call it 1050 Ti
They could easily bin all
They could easily bin all those chips that failed qc, disable a few cores and have a 1050 not try to pass it off as a 1060. Its shady no matter how you look at it.
Let me guess. It has 2.5GB of
Let me guess. It has 2.5GB of GDDR5 and .5GB of EDO SIMMS?
Actually 2.5GB + .5GB should
Actually 2.5GB + .5GB should be more than enough for everyone! If you need more than that you should get a Titan, anything less makes you a GPU peasant.
No you are the peasant as you
No you are the peasant as you have no money for food and clothes after you gave your all your cash to JHH and his GPU syndicate. You are beginning to look like a Halloween ornament with those sharp cheek bones and protruding ribs starting to take over as the defining aspects of your morphology.
If all you play is, say, Dota
If all you play is, say, Dota 2, you do not need more than 3 GB. It all depends on what someone needs.
NOT what he meant with 3GB vs
NOT what he meant with 3GB vs 6GB. He said that EVEN in games that you don’t need more than 3GB you will STILL see lower performance.
He did NOT say there’s no point to more than 3GB of VRAM.
Doesn’t matter much for 1080p
Doesn’t matter much for 1080p gaming, tbh. If someone is shooting for 1440p, get the 6GB GPU or a better card. There’s options. There’s no story here.
It has to be $100 to make any
It has to be $100 to make any sense.
If Nvidia wants to charge $200 then they better equip it with 9GB.
I think NVIDIA shoud call
I think NVIDIA shoud call this the GTX 1050 ti , calling it a 1060 is just weird… Even more so when you take into account that it has fewer cuss cores.
It’s funny that at videocardz
It’s funny that at videocardz they are shocked by the fact that two products with the same name come with different number of CUDA cores.
Then GT 730 comes in 3 versions.
One Fermi, DDR3, 128bit and 28GB/sec bandwidth
One Kepler DDR3, 64bit and 14GB/sec bandwidth
and one Kepler, GDDR5, 64bit and 40GB/sec bandwidth.
Three TOTALLY DIFFERENT products UNDER THE SAME NAME.
But at videocardz, no one has noticed.
Because no one cares about
Because no one cares about that card, it’s not a mass market product aimed at people who care about GPU performance
BS. And the more you say “I
BS. And the more you say “I don’t care if Nvidia charges $1200 for Titan, charges plus $100 for Founders and sells three different products under the same name”, the more probable is that a future product that you care about will be, overpriced, available only as Founders Edition and with different specs that wouldn’t be clear to the final consumer. You.
Keep giving excuses to Intel and Nvidia people. Keep shouting at AMD only and in a few years from now, you will be visiting PCPer only once a week, because you will know that nothing important is happening in the CPU and GPU market.
Well I already by your
Well I already by your picture that you are compleat loser. So AMD fanbody shut up and face it that gtx 1060 is better then AMD rx480 scrap. And please stop talk BS about intel and Nvidia prodacts which are 10x better then AMD junkyard prodacts.
So you are someone who

This Anon guy is total idiot.
This Anon guy is total idiot. I don’t know why did you even read his BS comment
Actually it’s mass market
Actually it’s mass market product aimed for OEMs. I think you mean to say it’s not aimed for people who buys their graphics cards themselves for gaming.
What is coming to name of this card, I agree it’s quite stupid naming it gtx 1060. Maybe they market it as gtx 1060 3GB and prevents AIBs slapping more memory on it.
I think NVidia just likes
I think NVidia just likes getting class actions suits levelled at it.
Sure, let’s make a GPU with misleading specs… maybe nobody will notice or care?
A Ford F150 comes with 4
A Ford F150 comes with 4 different motors, 3 different cab designs, and either a 5.5ft bed or a 8ft bed, but it’s still called an F150 no matter how it’s configured.
GPUs =/= vehicle trims
I hope
GPUs =/= vehicle trims
I hope you’re at least getting paid for that sort of mental gymnastics.
At least learn reading
At least learn reading comprehension. Original poster also said 4 different motors.
For example more or less cylinders in a motor affects performance similar to more or less cores in a video card.
I hope you are at least getting paid for your poor nitpicking.
Right… So if you expect a
Right… So if you expect a Superduty F-150, and a base model turns up, you’re gonna be just fine with that ? Shit boy, did you just get in a new batch of stupid ? Stop talking out of your ass.
I’m quite sure they’ll be
I’m quite sure they’ll be very upfront about the specs. If you don’t read the description before you buy something then you are the idiot. Yeah if you ordered an f150 with the v8 and you got a v6. Then yeah you could sue or get refund. It’s called getting conned. Selling a 3 gig version that is slightly less performing for less money isn’t ripping someone off. So quit trying to make an issue where there isn’t any. As if AMD doesn’t do the same freaking thing. LOL
Yea but all those trucks
Yea but all those trucks share the same chassis so at least they share something. The 3gb model doesn’t have the same amount of memory obviously, and doesn’t have the same number of cores… soooo what exactly do they share?
Its the same gpu core and die
Its the same gpu core and die size, and etc. Just with one cluster disabled. And half the ram. I bought a 1 gig geforce 460 in my day that was better performance wise than the 768 mb version. It has been done for years. People are gonna hate because of the color they bleed.
Why don’t they just brand
Why don’t they just brand this as the GTX 1050 and be done with it. Typical stupid corporate decisions.
It will sell tons as it more
It will sell tons as it more than likely will deliver 970 performance. The thing that really sucks about the 1060 is that they took off the sli bridge, two of these would destroy the 1070 and probably match the 1080. It’s a great business decision but sucks for consumers who valued that feature.
GTX 1060 SE (OEM ONLY?)
GTX 1060 SE (OEM ONLY?)
Gtx 1060 SE – Gtx 1060 Sucky
Gtx 1060 SE – Gtx 1060 Sucky Edition
Does that make the rx mean
Does that make the rx mean ridiculous (x)crement on the 470 and 460 then. Because this card even with less cores will beat both those Polaris models.
Geez this has nothing to do
Geez this has nothing to do with AMD, why bring them up? Of course that’s rhetorical question because its obvious why you did.
Is there a reason why NVidia even needs to release a 3gb version of the 1060? Is there a 4gb 1070/80? Would disabling some cores and calling it a 1050 really be so hard? Its misleading to put it kindly, and there’s no reason for it other than greed.
It will be nice for the owners of 3gb versions when their class action settlement money comes in though.
Because AMD fangirl above
Because AMD fangirl above called it the sucky edition. An attack on Nvidia obviously.
For the 1080 resolution 3gb and 6gb probably does not have much difference performance wise. What matters is price. If this is priced low enough and gets almost rx 480 performance it will sell well enough.
I’d be surprised if Nvidia puts out a 1050 model. There was literally very little difference frame rate wise between a 4 gig 960 and 2 gig 950. I know it was Maxwell arch but still. Less than 5 frames in most games.
Why would they get a class action suit? You know the card comes with only 3 gigs as an option. I’m quite sure they’ll make sure every spec difference is detailed. They’re not stupid. So no class action for you.
Go away chizow, no one likes
Go away chizow, no one likes you here.
I’m not him/her. I just hate
I’m not him/her. I just hate to see Nvidia bashing running unchecked. This seems to be a fair review site. Just too many AMD fanboys here. Just like Tom’s which I used to post at. You can’t reason with a fanboy. I don’t insult unless insulted first. I prefer Nvidia video cards period. I try to inform as to the truth of things with evidence if possible.
Nvidia earns all its bashing
Nvidia earns all its bashing just look at that $30 dollars that Nvidia has to pay out to the GTX 970 users. Nvidia’s prices are not very affordable like Intel’s high pricing so the truth is that Nvidia is just about the overpricing and gimping for dollars relative to AMD. AMD also offers more FP compute for less dollars for other non gaming workloads. So AMD has a better all around GPU compute ability to go with is better price/performance metrics for gaming uses also.
The truth is that even AMD’s older GCN versions are getting more boost from Vulkan/DX12 while Nvidia’s older SKUs are becoming obsolete fast, so enjoy sending more of your money to JHH. It’s no wonder that Nvidia will charge more for any extra FP compute, as Nvidia is all about the product segmentation of its GPU SKUs to milk those Nvidia customers every step of the way.
Look at Nvidia’s marketing still pushing the power usage metrics and not supplying any extra FP compute, and Nvidia’s consumer SKUs are only for gaming while any extra compute will cost extra $$$$$. I’ll take AMD’s extra compute in its consumer SKUs and AMD’s hardware will make better use of that extra compute for gaming acceleration under Vulkan/DX12, enjoy your outdated DX11 graphics API because DX11 is now legacy, with Vulkan and DX12 taking over.
Keep dreaming. Dx11 will be
Keep dreaming. Dx11 will be here just as long as dx12. Dx 9 is still viable Blizzard makes use of it, Starcraft 2 anyone.
Comment by AMD’s Robert Hallock. Not the right one but it will suffice.
I don’t think the dividing line will be “big vs. small” studios. I think the dividing line will be in passion for rendering tech. DX12 is the latest, fastest, most flexible API, which breeds opportunity for many new rendering effects, hardware uses and performance boosts.
But not every game needs that. Not every game is a hugely technical endeavor. I think these devs could stay on DX11 or DX9. But if you are pub/dev that cares very passionately about making a game as fast and pretty as possible, DX12 is a key decision.
So compute isn’t used for everything. What’s AMD’s VR performance like. Compute doesn’t help very much there.
On price I’ve found out you usually get what you pay for. Cheaper is usually just that end of story.
Hmm, so this thing really has
Hmm, so this thing really has 8Gbps gddr5 chips. When RX 480 4GB version were released there were no 4Gb 8Gbps memory chips, thus RX 480 4GB version has 4Gb 7GBps chips(and thus lower memory bandwidth than 8GB version).
Now I can see that every gddr5 manufacturer has 4Gb 8GBps chips, so might be a reason why they weren’t releasing 3GB card at the same time as 6GB version. Nvidia was waiting faster vrams.
No. Companies prefer to sell
No. Companies prefer to sell more expensive cards with higher profit margins. If RX480 hasn’t came out, GTX 1060 wouldn’t have been released in the market before August.
And because GTX 1060 is selling pretty well, probably 3 to 1, or even 4 to 1, compared to RX 480(the power of the brand, plus probably better availability, AMD should cut it’s ties with GlobalFailures), GTX 1060 3GB is postponed for September.
“And because GTX 1060 is
“And because GTX 1060 is selling pretty well, probably 3 to 1, or even 4 to 1, compared to RX 480(the power of the brand, plus probably better availability, AMD should cut it’s ties with GlobalFailures)…”
How do you get to those ratios and implied issues with GF outside of pure guess work? Do you have a reliable source or sources?
And speaking of higher margin gpu’s, vega 10 is coming soon, and that is straight from AMD. Gure3d suspects by October and that seems reasonable based on the AMD comments. I am stoked about that.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4xo5ip/amd_vs_nvidia_sales_numbers_one_outlet/?st=iruzlw9g&sh=af5be09d
That’s only one shop, but I don’t believe things are any different elsewhere.
Also the main difference in this generation of cards, is that one is making them at TSMC and the other at GF. Considering that, even while selling lower numbers, RX480 gone pretty fast mostly out of stock in the US market at least, and the fact that AMD seemed to postpone it’s launch by a month to create inventory, I would blame GF.
You can say that I am guessing, but do you have concrete evidence about the opposite? Do you have a reliable source or sources? Or are you also guessing but you consider your guessing better than mine?
Vega 10 will come when it is ready. Guru3D took a facebook post and wrote a nice click bait article.
I was just asking if you knew
I was just asking if you knew for sure. I had no problem with an educated guess, but was wondering if it was more then that. I did not mean to suggest there is anything wrong with guessing. I never suggested what you said was not accurate. I never suggested the opposite was true, though I surely wish it was. Why do you feel the need to make this an argument rather than a friendly discussion? I am not your enemy and appreciate your posts. Maybe not everyone is looking to give you a hard time. I am certainly not.

At 1080 Im already going over
At 1080 Im already going over 3gb on my card in games like Star Citizen and Ark. This thing will be outdated before Nvidia can sell you the refresh in 6 months.
Then turn down a setting or
Then turn down a setting or two. I ran a 7970 with a 1080 screen for over 4 years, and the only games I ever had to turn down settings on were gtav and shadow of mordor. And even then it was settings that never made a difference anyway, like reflections in mirrors, etc.
Yea, I agree, maxing out every setting at 1080 can be rough on a card with 3GB of VRAM with a couple of games, but that in no way means that 3GB is outdated.
I run PS3 with 256MB of VRAM
I run PS3 with 256MB of VRAM for years but … current consoles do have 8GB of fast ram so anything less is outdated.
