Vault 1080, which is a terrible pun by the way, is a free mod of Fallout 4 that is developed by NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios. It is designed to show off GameWorks technologies, such as volumetric lighting and HBAO+, more heavily than Bethesda did with the base game. They claim that the content lasts more than an hour, which is pretty decent for a free expansion.
It will launch on the first day of PAX West: September 2nd.
If you're wondering why NVIDIA has a game development studio, they are mostly responsible for bringing content from the PC to their Shield devices, such as Half-Life 2 and Portal. They also created NVIDIA's VR Funhouse demo, which was also release for free to show off GameWorks (such as NVIDIA Flow and VRWorks Audio) for the HTC Vive. Basically, they develop games (and now game content) to make NVIDIA's hardware more appealing.
That’s a good idea and a good
That’s a good idea and a good way to push your techs. No sabotaging, no gimping, just a nice gift to your customers. Hope they changed their minds and produce more game mods in the future than stupid locks for their proprietary techs.
Good job Nvidia.
The game uses gameworks, so
The game uses gameworks, so they can use their tech already in the game (god rays, volumetric lighting, shadows). If this was a game not “gimped” by gameworks they wouldn’t be able to use it and wouldn’t make the mod?
Basically your saying gameworks sucks, good job nvidia for using gameworks in a mod. Do more of this nvidia. Even though you need the base game to support gameworks to produce a mod that uses gameworks…………..
There is a small difference
There is a small difference between “using GameWorks” and “using GameWorks extensively” and in some cases unnecessarily.
I would like to see the second to happen only in extra content, like in this case, so it doesn’t affect the standard gaming experience (much) for the rest of the consumers, who haven’t bought an Nvidia card. I don’t want to see Nvidia or any company mess with the basic game. At the same time I don’t care what they will do with extra content that they give away for free, or even at a very small price.
I am one of those who scream at Nvidia for it’s business practices all the time. NOT in this case.
Not gonna happen. Hey Mr dev
Not gonna happen. Hey Mr dev put gameworks into your renderer/physics pipeline incase we want to make a mod one day, but don’t use it in your base game.
If nvidia pays to have gameworks used in games (I’m not sure on the backroom dealings involved) they wont be compelled to pay, or give dev assistance, or whatever. It’s a waste of their time/money.
Then its the same for the dev, if they don’t get the kickbacks, its a waste of their time to develop/program something they are not gonna use but nvidia might 8 months down the track.
I’d just prefer gameworks went away. Or was only used in nv’s own products like the vr demo, or stuff they port to shield. I can’t think of one gameworks title that actually looked worth the performance hit with the effects on, or didn’t look better with them just off anyway.
I think your logic is flawed.
I think your logic is flawed. While it is true that if the game was made with gameworks form the beginning that it would make it easier to add more gameworks effects later on. But that doesn’t mean it would be impossible to add gameworks to a game that doesn’t have it to begin with.
Games are modded and changed all the time by a LOT of people, game devs and consumers alike.
Maybe they should focus on
Maybe they should focus on getting DX12 and Vulkan compatibility with Fermi, like the promised.
Only 1080 cards can run this
Only 1080 cards can run this MOD at acceptable rates? Sounds like Nvidia, GPU peasants need not apply.
