When Microsoft launched the Surface there were negative reactions from vendors who saw this as new competition from what was previously their partner. Today DigiTimes reports that certain unnamed GPU vendors have similar feelings about NVIDIA's Founder's Edition cards. Jen-Hsun responded to these comments today, stating that the Founders Editions were "purely to solve problems in graphics card design".
While he did not say that NVIDIA would not consider continuing practice in future cards he does correctly point out that they did share everything about the design and results with the vendors. Those vendors are still somewhat upset about the month in which only Founder's Editions were available for sale as they feel they lost some possible profits by not being able to sell their custom designed GPUs. Then again, considering the limited supply on the market, the amount of sales they could have made that extra month would certainly have been limited. It will be interesting to see if we hear more about this directly from the vendors in the coming weeks.
"Since Nvidia has restricted its graphics card brand partners from releasing in-house designed graphics cards within a month after the releases of its Founders Edition card, the graphics card vendors are displeased with the decision as it had given Nvidia time to earn early profits without competition."

Wish we had a Jen-Hsun for
Wish we had a Jen-Hsun for the new generation. Someone smarter than him breaks off from Nvidia and founds a new start up to compete. Whispers of a dream.
New competition in GPU space
New competition in GPU space is nigh impossible due to patents.
I don’t quite get nvidia. How
I don’t quite get nvidia. How is the FE exists to ‘solve problems’. Virtually every AIB cards are better in everyway and less expensive. How is the FE helping the partners and gamers exactly? If anything, the FE inflated the prices across the board. For example the AIB cards are on average $30-50$ less expensive than the FE, which is supposed to be $100 more expensive compared to the rest of the air cooled boards.
To my knowleddge, blower
To my knowleddge, blower style cards are better in small form factor/ITX cases, where you don’t have enough room for adequate airflow in the case. That said, I see no reason why they couldn’t have just stuck with their traditional reference model at the baseline MSRP. Founder’s Editions were just a way to gouge early adopters for a few extra bucks.
As far as I can tell,
As far as I can tell, founders edition cards existed because they did not take the time to stockpile production before launching. This means that they had very limited availability and very high prices. If they had stockpiled production for a while, there would have been more cards available for MSRP at, or close to, launch. It was really all a marketing thing; nothing to do with engineering. They launched before AMD, even though availability was low. That low availability jacked up prices and probably fueled more demand to some extent.
i think nvidia already
i think nvidia already explain that with founders edition they are finally charging premium price on the metal shroud use on the card. just imagine nvidia with their NVTTM cooler and boardpartner plastic blower cooler having the same price.if both have the same base price which card will you end up taking if you were given the choice to pick between the two? this is how it goes with past cards such as GTX780/780Ti. with 10 series nvidia decided to past the cost on consumer.
So basically, Nvidia is
So basically, Nvidia is admitting to want to charge even more premium than before? makes sense to pass the cost on to the customer, because hey, what customer doesn’t want to pay more?
yes. it was as simple as
yes. it was as simple as that.
it did not help the gamer
it did not help the gamer (and nvidia never mention such). but board partner can come up with much cheaper price to compete with FE pricing and feature. the end user will not going to happy with the price but board partner also want to sell the card high price for their own profit. what board partner did not like probably they have to sell their custom card at much lower price than nvidia FE edition of card.
Founders edition is what the
Founders edition is what the Nvidiots deserve for their foolish loyality to JHH and his greed! FE is all about Nvidia milking its customers for more profits! Just look at thoes markups over MSRP and JHH wants all that for himself!
It’s good that AMD will be going after the professional/HPC markets with Vega 10 first. And AMD’s Boltzmann-Initiative/GPU open is there to help convert all the CUDA code to OpenCL/other for use with AMD’s GPUs! There is more revenues in the HPC/Server/worktation markets as well as AI markets.
Nvidia doesn’t get a dime of
Nvidia doesn’t get a dime of those markups over MSRP. It all goes to the resellers.
That’s why the FEs cost more
That’s why the FEs cost more to get some of that milking to Nvidia’s fat bank account! JHH needs his billions!

Posts like yours make Nvidia look GOOD.
The REAL problem with the founders editions are that theyre probably made by FOXCONN and are therefore the cheapest shit out there.
They have fewer power phases than most AIBs and worse cooling. They should be the CHEAPEST not the most expensive.
not sure about PCB but nvidia
not sure about PCB but nvidia did charge extra for the metal shroud they use on the FE. this is one of the reason why the FE was expensive and nvidia did not even try to hide this fact. GTX770 with NVTTM cooler for example only available in very limited quantity (only few first batch of production have it) because the cooler was expensive to make and yet they still priced the same with board partner that replace that metal shroud with a plastic one. buying the FE simply means you pay extra for the metal that they use to make the shroud.
whether it’s a metal blower
whether it’s a metal blower cooler or a plastic one, BLOWER STYLE COOLERS SUCK!!!
for regular case that might
for regular case that might be the case. but for small case or mini ITX case having gpu with blower style cooler would be better since the heat from the gpu are thrown out from the case directly instead being circulated back to the case.
Foxconn only manufactures to
Foxconn only manufactures to Nvidia’s exact specifications! So it’s all done down to Nvidia’s exact specifications and Gimping for extra dollars. JHH needs every dollar he can grub up from the Green Goblin’s fools and their easily separated money. JHH needs a new Learjet!
Im just saying that
Im just saying that EVERYTHING MADE BY FOXCONN IS SHIT. ESPECIALLY THE HISSING iPhone!
Foxcon gimps on Nvidia’s
Foxcon gimps on Nvidia’s orders, and the green toothed Redneck Green fans eat it all up! The Gimping is done in the world wide under orders from JHH/Apple/Whereever the designers are. JHH is gimping and charging all the little gaming sycophants mad money for their Nvidia addiction!
What a touchy subject. It
What a touchy subject. It really seems like this only benefits nvidia and well they are in the business of making money but if they become too greedy I don’t know customers and manufacturers may start looking elsewhere ? Maybe if only AMD put some competitive pressure … Man what good old days when you had 3 or more cards to chose from
high price might be bad for
high price might be bad for us consumer but board partner also hoping to maximize their own profit. and right now there probably no board partner will pass the chance if they get to sell nvidia gpu despite how strict nvidia can be. when AMD release Fury X at the same price as nvidia 980Ti i heard some of AMD partner did not like that decision because Fury X was supposed to sell at much higher than $650.
Correct renz. Rumor had the
Correct renz. Rumor had the price for Furyx pegged in $800-900 range. Nvidia made it to market first with 980ti at $650. AMD fanboys should be kissing Nvidia’s *ss for not allowing AMD to gouge them for Furyx.
The Fury X had HBM, and
The Fury X had HBM, and AMD/SK Hynix spent years on HBM and invested on developing that technology that even Nvidia is using. So thanks to AMD again for HBM! And AMD/SK Hynix where kind enough to make HBM/HBM2 into a JEDEC standard for all to use! Nvidia just tries to make everything proprietary! JHH loves his lock-in but AMD will put an end to that, even in the HPC market! Nvidia’s price gouging days are numbered!
The only thing that Nvidia develops is more ways to gouge its customers(Fools)! You are part of the G-Farce experience!
Hynix will want HBM to be
Hynix will want HBM to be part of Jedec standard even without AMD because without that they cannot guarantee adoption. part of the reason also because they want nvidia market because to date nvidia still sell more gpu than AMD.
in HPC AMD will have much harder time not because of nvidia but because of intel.
I guess the partners should
I guess the partners should quit complaining. Nvidia could keep all their models in house and not let board partners build any at all. I’d imagine they make a lot more profit per unit sold than selling the GPU to a partner company. One month of exclusivity for more cost (FE)can only create more demand for the cheaper costing partner cards. Much ado about nothing it seems.
Was Nvidia gouging on their site for FE cards above their suggested retail price? If not then quit complaining about their greed.
Nvidia don’t have exclusivity on greed. AMD has exercised their right many times in the past. For example, the AMD 9590 retailed in excess of $800 because it was the first 5 GHz CPU but similar in performance to i7 4770k for only $350. It also consumed 3 times the wattage (TDP) of the Intel.
Another more recent example is the Furyx retailing at same cost of 980 ti eventhough it was only slightly above a 980 that cost $500. The 980 could be overclocked to exceed the performance of the “overclocker’s dream” card.
You justify Furyx away with excuse that the new tech HBM was expensive. Did Nvidia not pay to design FE cooler? It should get cheaper for FE over time. When it does the partners will be complaining about that because then they will have to charge less for their models.
This is interesting, I hope
This is interesting, I hope PCPer follows up on this and asks NVIDIA AIB partners about it.
Put up, or shut up.
Nvidia
Put up, or shut up.
Nvidia no longer really needs AIB partners, like Apple they can now do it all themselves. Soon nvidia will need to kick out their AIB altogether, to keep their stock price up.
OUT with the partners!
