Compared to Q2 2016, total GPU shipments including discrete and integral chips in the mobile and desktop markets increased by 20%; good but not enough to recover to the volume we saw in Q3 2015. Indivdually, total AMD sales increased by 15% and but Intel 18% but it was NVIDIA that was the most successful with a 39% increase. In AMD's case they saw sales of their aging desktop APUs drop by 10% but that was more than offset by a jump in discrete GPU sales of 34.7% and an increase in laptop demand by 19.1% . The discrete GPU market as a whole has grown by 35.6% from the last quarter and by 10.1% when compared to last year. This is not bad news for AMD or Intel but it is certainly NVIDIA who has the most to celebrate. Pop over to Jon Peddie Research for a look at their overview, or check out the full report if you subscribe to them.
Obviously the PC is still dead … right?

"AMD's overall unit shipments increased 15.38% quarter-to-quarter, Intel's total shipments increased 17.70% from last quarter, and Nvidia's increased 39.31%."

I’d rather see a further
I’d rather see a further breakdown in the overall GPU market with APU/SOC integrated graphics listed separately from the discrete GPU market. So List the integrated APU/SOC GPU/Graphics markets on one pie chart and the discrete GPU market on another pie chart with the percentages labeled on the pie charts. They always should list the total overall GPU market size percentage growth/decline because that can potentially help all companies make/lose more sales regardless of any minor shifts in one company’s total GPU market share.
One pie chart for Integrated GPUs market share and one for Discrete GPUs market share with a third pie chart for total GPU Integrated/Discrete market share. The overall market expanding or contracting can have a higher effect on sales than any market share numbers sometimes and APU/SOC graphics should always be listed separately from discrete to get the best picture of both those GPU markets.
Maybe they could also list the Integrated GPU/Graphics Licensed IP market just to see who is making the most licensed GPU IP licensing sales for companies like ARM Holdings(Mali), Imagination Technologies(PowerVR), and any other companies that license GPU IP/designs to be used in others’ SOCs.
You can always pay the $2500
You can always pay the $2500 for the quarter or $5000 for the full year and get that info.
That’s some Nvidia/Apple
That’s some Nvidia/Apple grade price structure for ya! And maybe JPR can just keep it to themselves for that asking price. I’ll just read more articles on the subject from other online sources as they always report some other JPR figures for the same period. So that’s an easy way to get a better picture without breaking the bank. It looks like Laptops are doing better than Tablets in the most current reported quarter according to WCCFTech, and I’ll go read a few more other website writeups to cross check that info.
It looks like the entire GPU/graphics market is up probably due in the most part to the 14nm/16nm GPU process node shrink’s first products getting to market in the Polaris/Pascal offerings. So long 28nm, and let’s see how long 14nm is around before the next big process node shrink.
I hope that was sarcasm!!!
