Seemingly out of nowhere, Cyanogen, an alternative distribution of Android, begun laying off its employees last month, shutting down their Seattle office with the option to relocate to Palo Alto. At the same time, the founder, Steve Kondik, left the company. Then, on the last business day before Christmas Eve, they announced that “all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16”.
At this point, I don’t really know what’s left of the company, which makes me wonder, if anyone did relocate from Washington State to California, whether they will still have a job there. The project will continue on as an independent, open-source operating system, called Lineage OS. As far as I can tell, the company doesn’t actually do anything else, so I can’t really see what they would restructure into. I'm guessing it's just done.
Yes LineageOS will replace
Yes LineageOS will replace CyanogenMod with a new name same project sort of thing that happens in the open source world. So not too much different from forking it except this happened because of finances rather than some internal dispute! Cyanogen is done so stick a fork in that and move on from there! Maybe they can name each major release after the next level up the evolutionary linage as things evolve!
“Yes, this is us.”

I can’t help but think
I can’t help but think CyanogenMod was a great idea with a limited ability to be successful because of the nature of the market. There is nothing I would have liked better than to buy some inexpensive android tablets and have an OS that is updated regularly with the latest features.. preferably automatically. That could never happen in a world of locked boot-loaders. There is simply no way to have Mass adoption with that kind of limitation on devices. The best comparison would be Ubuntu in the PC space.. download, install, and it works. It’ll never be a major force but it seems to be a stable business.
I think the biggest cause of
I think the biggest cause of locked firmware, proprietary drivers, and short support is the rapid pace of innovation in the mobile device space and short product lifespan. If Samsung still supported the Galaxy S5 it wouldn’t matter because 95% of the buyers would have moved on by now even if their gadget was working perfectly with Android 7.
I *hope* open source will gain a bigger foothold when the rate of change slows. When a smaller slice of the market upgrades every three years, or sooner, maybe you can reverse engineer a chip before it’s effectively obsolete.
Isn’t that what all windows
Isn’t that what all windows 10 tablets can do already? They are constantly kept up to date through windows update. Features can only be added if the hardware is supported by the device you have or want. You can’t magically add features unless you’re dealing with a module device or desktop PC. Just go buy a Surface Pro and you’re good to go.

They are constantly kept
They are constantly kept under a forced windows 10 update system of Bloatware, Adware, and Spyware by the Lords of Redmond! Really the Surface Pro is overpriced even by Apple standards, and the closed ecosystem smell of the death of user control over their own hardware that makes Apple/Google appear open by comparison!
Let’s stick with LineageOS and put the smoldering ashes of Cyanogen behind! And avoid that windows 10 EULA that is more the terms of indentured servitude to the Lords of Redmond.
the lack of wifi calling
the lack of wifi calling using CM is what killed my interest in it.
Too much dealings with M$ is
Too much dealings with M$ is what killed Cyanogen! It drove developers away! The very idea of CM at first was to counter Google’s closed ecosystem so any relations with M$ was far worse to many developers! Oh the irony! Cyanogen is now just another smoldering platform name. But luckily there will be that Fork in the road to LineageOS and no dependency on any closed ecosystem lock-downs form any big closed ecosystem interests like there was for Cyanogen!
LinageOS a name change and a good washing to get that M$ association smell off of things!

Yeah, that prevented me from using it. Surely it is not in the “too hard” sandbox?

All of the MS bashing on a
All of the MS bashing on a PCPER article is cracking me up. The stink of MS… Really? This site and the gamers who come back day after day rely on MS. I like an almost stock Android OS. the new Moto phones work just fine for me and I could care less about CM and it’s fate. It always had far to many drawbacks for me when I used it.
I don’t get it either. Other
I don’t get it either. Other than Jeremy (no offense intended), the staff don’t seem to promote the antagonism toward Microsoft. The products they [Microsoft] release, especially recently, have pushed technology forward in very significant ways. People like to complain about bloat and telemetry, but every other major tech company does the same thing for the same reasons and the crazy thing is, Windows 10 runs better than Windows 7 does on the same spec system. Heck, I have a laptop that came out around XP SP2 and it runs Windows 10 just fine.
GTFO shill, People want
GTFO shill, People want control of their PC/Laptop hardware and not some marketing monkey driven monetization scheme from the Lords of Redmond! Capossela is that you, just look at all the damage your forcing has caused and more judgements are coming! Windows 10 is just a monopolistic land grab over the third party PC/laptop market and that market’s end users by default. It’s time to bust the M$ Trust and put the user in full control of their PC/Laptop hardware!
“every other major tech company does the same thing”. Really that tired old defenestration! It’s the same old M$ paid apologists again and again!
Cyanogen the so called anti-Google throws in with M$ and see waht that got them! M$ will not get its sticky hands on LineageOS to scroogle times 10 that open source project!
“Really that tired old
“Really that tired old defenestration! It’s the same old M$ paid apologists again and again!”
I think we can all agree that defenestration is the act of execution by being thrown from a window.
Perhaps the above poster wishes to throw me from a window to kill me, but is frustrated by the past failures of this method to execute the “M$ paid apologists” and is therefore proclaiming his distaste for the outmoded form of execution.
No Need you are already brain
No Need you are already brain dead! And that Windows 10 forcing is a defenestration of user privacy rignt out the window with that windows 10 spyware/adware and bloatware pushing. So let’s throw windows 10 out the window and M$ along with it! M$ paid apologists are working overtime, but that forcing has backfired! Tell the Lords of Redmond to bugger off!
I love your persistence.
I love your persistence.
I’ll pass your message along to the Lords.
Such rage against a tech
Such rage against a tech company?? Geez get a life.
Much ado about nothing really.
So much rage against a
So much rage against a monopoly forcing its will with the thrid party PC/laptop OEM market and makng the PC market into an Apple Style closed ecosystem! Windows 7 still has the most market share for a reason, and windows 8/10 is taking things in the wrong direction! So enjoy your spyware/adware and crapware pushing that candy crush will not go away no matter how many times you uninstall it!

Marketing Monkey for the big
Marketing Monkey for the big monopoly M$ and its Illegal vertical market integrating scheme over the indipendent third party OEM PC/Laptop OS market and by default the PC/Laptop hardware of the end users who want NOTHING to do with any closed OS ecosystem on their hardware! To Hell with M$ and windows 10 and its EULA from the pits of hell!
You got me. I responded to
You got me. I responded to myself. How silly of me to think I could get away with it considering all the brilliant minds lurking in the comment section lately…
I suspect it’s just one noisy
I suspect it’s just one noisy troll. I’m a Linux fan and a Free Software Foundation member. But Microsoft is no worse than Google, Apple, or Facebook. Software updates on Android or Chrome OS are less annoying and more reliable, but the exact same invasion of privacy, data collection, and Digital Rights Management is present.
Enough of the M$ nonsense. I actually think Google is a bigger threat than Microsoft, because so many people that won’t use Office, Windows, or IE/Edge because they’re proprietary will give all their data to Google Docs, Chrome OS/Android, and Chrome and flat out gave up on free software.
Thats one tired old argument:

But Mom all the other kid are doing it, so its must be allright to peep in the neighbor’s window and invade their privacy!
Really a “Linux fan and a Free Software Foundation member” to the defence of the big Monopoly that is forcing a closed ecosystem on the third party PC/Laptop OEM market! So we can all get that Apple style treatment in the Non Apple closed ecosystem PC/Laptp market, YMMV!
RIP only halfway good phone
RIP only halfway good phone OS.
You know what? Just got sent
You know what? Just got sent the last snapshot of CM/Andoid 6 on my Nexus4 – thanks for that
It’s a shame to see the brand go, if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t even have thought of buying my Nook Color or the Galaxy S2 back in the day – I only did because they were cheap hardware and CM was a good OS, which I still use today.
I hope they can pull it back together under whichever brand they decide to go with, and I hope they’ll monetize with something like patreon.
The hard part isn’t using
The hard part isn’t using Patreon, it’s getting people to pay. How many CyanogenMod users will pay to support Lineage at $1 per month or more? If it’s 100,000, Lineage will conquer Android. If it’s 350, Lineage is doomed.
To be fair, I came to open source 15 years ago because I couldn’t afford the proprietary options. I contribute a little money to Firefox, Ubuntu, and a few other projects because I can now.. but I have no beef with the millions of users that are as broke as I was in 2001.
