A new version of Windows 10 was leaked, and it apparently contains a file called “gamemode.dll”. Some people are speculating that this could be API hooks for applications to request higher priority with CPU and GPU resources, increasing performance. Microsoft gave a "no comment" to PC Gamer about the issue, but Windows Central cites anonymous sources claiming that this is the case, and it is either related or analogous to how the Xbox One multitasks.
While I believe the DLL exists, of course, I’m skeptical about its function — but I would bet that it’s true (given how sure everyone seems to be). Also, I’ve seen GPGPU compute times fluctuate wildly by leaving other windows open, so there is probably some overhead that the OS can reduce. It just seems weird that this has come out of nowhere.
We’ll probably find out soon, because the Creators Update (Windows 10 1703) is coming out in a few months. Whatever this DLL is, it seems targeted at that feature update.
You can also check out other features of the leaked 14997 build, listed by Paul Thurrott.
I hope it’s just to disable
I hope it’s just to disable vsync in the DWM compositor to remove the added latency windowed mode adds.
that’s probably what it will
that’s probably what it will be
the reason we haven’t heard of it up to now is that it’s a low priority for them, so it’s probably a team of one working on it deep within microsoft, some random dude tinkering with DWM settings or something, and it fainlly got elevated to a point that its ready for beta testing
I hope this isn’t limited to
I hope this isn’t limited to UWP games, but knowing Microsoft it probably will be. Personally though I’ve never had an issue with how Windows allocates resources when I’ve been playing games over the years, I guess people with not much RAM may see some benefit though.
So they fill their OS with
So they fill their OS with bloat and “features” hardly anyone wants only to discover all that crud is slowing things down, good one Microsoft.
Besides it will probably only be available for UWP games bought for inflated prices from the Windows store and launched via that awful XBox app.
And there you have it a
And there you have it a closed ecosystem on users’ PCs/Laptops wedded to UWP and the windows store for any gaming “features”! Your PC/laptop is now an XBONE and you thought you just bought your hardware from a third party PC/laptop OEM, or maybe you even build your own gaming rig. M$ will be forcing more than updates it will be forcing users into their closed ecosystem and online store!
Slowly and insidiously M$ will be closing up and tying you to their monetization scheme with little features that are dependent on UWP and/or the M$ store! Windows 10 users will become like a slowly boiled frog happily getting in to the comfortable but gradually heating waters only to wind up boiled alive by the EULA and its terms and conditions!
Most users simply can not
Most users simply can not comprehend that or they don’t care. They do not see what windows 10 is going to be; an eternal blight to PC gaming if not stopped. Ignorance is a bliss to the very moment you realized you’re *ucked.
All i want is halo:
All i want is halo: MasterCheif colection on my PC. If they make that happen i’m good with whatever
but then how would they sell
but then how would they sell xbones?
they said that all future first party games would come to pc and xbone, so we can probably count on all future halo games to be on pc. just a matter of time before halo 3 remastered, etc. come to pc
I hope and pray this will be
I hope and pray this will be for all windows 10 gaming and not just windows store exclusive titles
I would love the opposite.
I would love the opposite. Can we please have a “do the shit windows 10 normally does in the background but all at once with a progress bar while on AC” mode?
Power up a new machine and it runs like garbage all day doing who knows what in the background… Windows update downloads, update rollup high CPU unpacking, App store update, Onedrive sync, backups, OEM update apps, Microsoft Office 365 one click update now that they decoupled it from windows update, sending off telemetry. It’s terrible!
This is why people go buy a Mac. Figure out the out of box user experience Microsoft!
