Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.12.2 is now live and WHQL certified, ready for you to grab here or through the version you already have installed, which supports the recommended clean installation option.
This particular update addresses Freesync issues with borderless Fullscreen applications as well as compatibility issues with Battlefield 1 and DOTA 2. There are also numerous optimizations and fixes for issues with Radeon ReLive, which you can read in more detail under the Release Notes tab.
This driver (16.12.1,16.12.2)
This driver (16.12.1,16.12.2) breaks overclocking on most last generation cards(290(x), 390(x), 380) with more than one monitor. Single monitors above 120Hz are effected as well. Happy New Year!
Does this still occur on the
Does this still occur on the WHQL version of 16.12.2? Just curious since I’m not home yet.
Hmm, don’t have the hardware
Hmm, don't have the hardware to test but I will keep my eye out.
This driver fuck my R9 290 so
This driver fuck my R9 290 so bad – fuck you AMD i will go to Nvidia soon !! Because RX 480 is a shit card than my R9 290 as performance… GTX 1070 coming soon. AMD bullshit scum…
There isn’t supposed to be
There isn't supposed to be any physical penetration … you sure you installed it right?
yes i am i use DDU to be much
yes i am i use DDU to be much sure i am installing clean. My R9 290 have a lot of problems with Crimson drivers. When i use Catalyst drivers befor Crimson i had no problems… but with Crimson almost every time got problems with R9 290 black screen error when i OC. This drivers fuck R9 200 series cards so bad… They are worse than Nvidia by far… i will never buy AMD again… never… fuck off AMD !!
Is this really the way you
Is this really the way you write, or did it go through google translate? If this is really the way you write, then I would suspect that there is a high probability of the problem being between the keyboard and your chair somewhere, rather than with AMD.
This 100%. There is NOTHING
This 100%. There is NOTHING wrong with the R9-290 (I own a ASUS model myself), and there is nothing wrong with this driver or the 16.12 original driver. And to take that a step further, it works perfectly fine with more than 2 screens, as I have 3 Acer 24″ monitors I use on my daily driver.
I’m going to suggest that your machine is having driver issues, in which case you should fix it because even moving to Nvidia wont help that, or you have conflicting software installed, in which case you should fix that as well.
Don’t use DDU, if the clean
Don't use DDU, if the clean install is not good enough for you try

It sounds like the issue you are having is with your overclock, so back off and figure out what the card can manage and if the problem is heat, power delivery or simply the silicon ageing.
Or, just blame AMD for everything I guess.
It would make some sense that
It would make some sense that if the driver increases performance by a not insignificant amount, then it could effect the overclock. If the GPU is doing more, then it will produce more heat, so a previous overclock may no longer be stable. Most chips would over clock well if you test them at 70 or 80 percent utilization rather than full load. AMD hasn’t been getting very close to their max theoretical performance for a while, or they would have been ahead of nvidia much more frequently. Are the crimson drivers getting significantly higher utilization?
“Don’t use DDU”?
Jeremiah,
“Don’t use DDU”?
Jeremiah, are you even for real? Please tell you’re not serious on this. No way in hell…
next you will tell me about a
next you will tell me about a free registry cleaner download that will make my laptop feel like new again?
You’ve got to be kidding
You’ve got to be kidding me…no way in hell you can be THIS unprofessional in regards to this. DDU is THE facto best driver removing/installing software out there, admitted as being such across the globe by every major tech reviewing and tech related news outlet source.
Is it officially supported by
Is it officially supported by AMD or Nvidia, or is it just a fun base out there thinking that DDU is the best software created after DOS 1.0?
I’d also love to hear someone
I'd also love to hear someone explain to our Global Security team how that is 'professional' software.
One week after installing and
One week after installing and using DDU, for at least 5 times, you get in your mailbox a certificate of professionalism.
A couple of years ago I tried to use an uninstaller for AMD cards. It was maintained by a Greek guy posting also in a Greek forum where I pass some time every day. He had a thread there about his program. As with DDU everyone was saying that his program was great, that you should never use the uninstall utility of your drivers and that maybe this program was even better than DDU. Nothing new here.
Anyway I thought to download it, but Avira started screaming. I asked about that in the thread. Never got an answer. It was probably a false positive, but what really turn me down it was that no one commented about that. Not even someone accusing me of doing a deliberate post to harm the program’s credibility. Nothing. Absolutely no answer.
That is always a bad sign, if
That is always a bad sign, if no one on the internet has an opinion on it you know there is something wrong!

As a software developer
As a software developer myself, you shouldn’t use 3rd party software to manipulate what is, in this case, 1st party software. They often times miss a lot of things, or in the case of DUU do way too much that they don’t need to.
The facts are, if there is a piece of software out there that is a “one size fits all” software, its not good software. You should use the AMD Uninstall Utility that JH provided.
DDU is the official driver
DDU is the official driver uninstalling software highly recommended and directly provided for a download by Guru3D outlet, for example. Suck it, lamers. Yes, Jeremiah, that goes your way also. You truly amuse me at how bad you turned out to be.
I ‘ll have to agree with this
I ‘ll have to agree with this one.
I stopped using uninstallers years ago. I don’t get it with people thinking that a third party uninstaller will do a better work than the official drivers. Maybe 10 years ago there was logic behind this, or when using custom drivers, or in the case that the driver was so f_ up, you just could not uninstall it. But today it is pointless.
Even uninstallers could have bugs. And because people working on them and people using them, are not exactly a multi billion company with hundreds of millions of customers, those bugs will stay unnoticed for, maybe, years. And people will be blaming the drivers.
For a long period I was using an AMD primary card with an Nvidia secondary card for PhysX with the known patch. Never ever had a problem. Never used an uninstaller. Under XP, under 7, it was working flawlessly. Strange considering that most people where saying that a system with both Nvidia and AMD drivers installed would explode.
Do not Install AMD drivers on
Do not Install AMD drivers on systems with only Nvidia graphics cards. They will NOT work with your Nvidia card.
There is clearly a very hard
There is clearly a very hard and thick physical penetration in his rear connector, that’s for sure.
You have a 5 year old core.
You have a 5 year old core. How about finding the latest stable driver for your setup and stay there?
Also, stop posting on the internet, and maybe sell your pc and get a mac, ps4 or xbox. Your mental capabilities are insufficient for PC use.
@Anonymous #2
I also
@Anonymous #2
I also have a 290X (mine is an 8gb model), can you please elaborate on what problems you experienced, and if you have the 290 or the 290x? Is your monitor faster than 60Hz, do you have dual, do you overclock?
I am not happy about having Windows 10 Home and the fact that it will update the driver whether I want it to or not.
I was also experiencing
I was also experiencing issues with my 290 non x model on a water block. After a lot of trouble shooting the card was at fault n going bad. I went with 2x 480’s n i couldnt be happier with the upgrade. I run on a ultra wide 2k freesync monitor and most games that support crossfire i am hitting the 75hz with no problems. Games that doesnt support it i am easily able to disable the second card for that games profile and still is running great framerates on high or ultra.
I had an issue with 16.2.1
I had an issue with 16.2.1 with my r9 290. I had black screens and white screens usually preceded by bad ghosting especially on web pages with vertical columns. Some games would run fine, others such as Project Cars and Witcher 3 would crash within a few minutes. After much trouble shooting and reinstalling drivers (also going back to stock on the OC on the graphics card) it settled down on the then beta 16.2.2. Computer had been rock solid for nearly a year on previous versions of drivers. Hope AMD QA test the older cards, rather than concentrating on the new RX cards.
Thats strange because no
Thats strange because no problems on my 7970ghz cards which the 200 series is just a rebrand.
Why is this driver not
Why is this driver not 17.1.1?
Why was it sent to me as
Why was it sent to me as RSCRE 16.12.2 WHQL? these and more questions not answered any time soon … sorry.
I can’t even install this
I can’t even install this update. I always get the Error 186 – AMD Installer Cannot Continue Due to Missing or Corrupted Manifest Files. Does somebody else have this problem too?
usually a corrupted
usually a corrupted download. Kill it and start a fresh one. Manually uninstall all AMD GPU drivers or use the tool I linked to above before installing the new download.
you can find the log file in C:Program FilesAMDCIMLogInstaller.log if it is still not working
Is there a difference with
Is there a difference with 16.12.2 WHQL and 16.12.2 non WHQ? Surely they are the same besides the certification.
My r9 290 had black screen
My r9 290 had black screen issue and crashes, the problem went away after uping the fsb from 100 to 101 mhz.
Well this is quite
Well this is quite disappointing.
Turned out that these so-called “WHQL drivers” are nothing more than just a WHQL sign of previously released beta. There are ZERO changes from the previous beta release.
These are NOT full-on WHQL, which I hoped for them to be. Laaame.
Could be worse. You could
Could be worse. You could have Nvidia cards that crash nonstop in BF1. They just now released a driver 3 months later to fix the 600-700 series but have not addressed the 900 series yet.
And after Nvidia gets all of
And after Nvidia gets all of the Dice/Gaming Evolved sabotage figured out, Nvidia cards will beat the comparable AMD cards just like in BF4. But it will be much too late as every one will have the perception that Nvidia cards are crap for the game.
My solution is simpler, if the game runs like crap on my Nvidia card I simply don’t buy it at retail price at launch. Maybe worth a look when it’s soon in the $10 bargin bin.
It is also why people buy Nvidia for performance now… Not because your 4 year old AMD card beats a card that previously lost to. If most people pay more money for a new cellphone on 2 year rotation then it is nothing for someone to buy a new video card every 2-3 years. Especially if you are at midrange. If you are high end you might be able to stretch 5 years out of the card.
@Master Chen
You do realise
@Master Chen
You do realise that there is hardly any difference between the beta drivers and WHQL ones dont you. The difference is that WHQL ones have been given the thumbs up at good ole Microsoft. Nothing more, nothing less.
I dont tend to update my drivers unless I am either having problems or there are features in the new release that I would like to use/try out. Even then I wait a while and ask around for the general consensus of opinion on whether they are stable or not before installing them.
If I install them and I get an issue then I roll back to the previous version that gave me no issues. It’s hardly rocket science, just use some common sense. As for the guy that was ranting about the drivers fucking has card then go cry somewhere else if you cant ask a few sensible questions on a forum to ask for help. From the way it was written I would say he hasnt even got an AMD card….Damn Nvidia Fanboys/Shills. 😛
But you’d sure believe him if
But you’d sure believe him if he was ranting about Nvidia. AMD is copying Nvidia and if that includes “nerfing” the older generations then so be it.
AMD is most likely pushing you to buying a Polaris or Vega. Guys with 5-10 year old cards do not help AMD’s bottom line. Show your support for AMD today and buy a new card.
@Anonymous Nvidia User, what
@Anonymous Nvidia User, what are you going on about?
I just explained the difference between WHQL and non-WHQL drivers….nothing, zero, zilch…apart from someone in MS rubber stamping it. It had nothing to do with driver performance or otherwise.
History tells us that AMD supports it older cards far better than Nvidia ever did. I already showed my support as I have a Fury Tri-X card from Sapphire, which performs very well thanks. Some of us dont go chasing benchmarks or need to be seen to have the fastest card. Some of us just want a good value for money card that runs our games at a decent resolution (1440P in my case) and the Fury does that really well. I enjoy my games…that is the end result we should all be looking for. Do I want a Vega card….well I’m not sure. I will look at one when they are released and the game benches have been done. I don’t really want to spend such crazy amounts on another graphics card (£419 was enough for me). Until games start creaking @ 1440P then I think I’m okay.
You are quite unprofessional
You are quite unprofessional at this.
By absolutely major portion of it WHQL sets tend to have a lot of major bug fixes, significant optimizations, and larger batches of multi-GPU support profiles for new games added, in comparison to beta and alpha drivers. You clearly don’t know jack about the thing you’re talking on. As a person who’s been a hardcore PC enthusiast since 1997, you and your kind of uneducated inexperienced scrubs makes me sick.
You are right i am hardocore
You are right i am hardocore gamer few more years than you .but I are absolute right. I don’t know if I will buy AMD product again a lot of problems with my junk rx 460 problems that effect all machine other components even I install whql certified drivers.I am not telling nvidia does not have issues but fewer for sure and not have affection with other components like AMD gpu.example ping spikes issues from AMD drivers makes Windows search every 10 seconds in gaming for network..Jesus AMD go pley Tetris better.
is there new drivers or a
is there new drivers or a hotfix anywhere to fix this problem drivers? i see lots of different opinions on all sites lots that its an unstable overclocking well for myself the only thing that fixes the problem for me is to crank the overclocking to max 1050 mhz and memory to 1500 mhz i dont get a black screen like everyone just every setting lags unless i overclock but this is only with game that have steam every other game works great (resident evil 7 with steam is acting up the worst)any advise or do i have the same problem as the other person you have been “debating” with?
