Just ahead of CES, AMD has published a teaser page with, currently, a single YouTube video and a countdown widget. In the video, a young man is walking down the street while tapping on a drum and passing by Red Team propaganda posters. It also contains subtle references to Vega on walls and things, in case the explicit references, including the site’s URL, weren’t explicit enough.
How subtle, AMD.
Speaking of references to Vega, the countdown widget claims to lead up to the architecture preview. We were expecting AMD to launch their high-end GPU line at CES, and this is the first (official) day of the show. Until it happens, I don’t really know whether it will be a more technical look, or if they will be focusing on the use cases.
The countdown ends at 9am (EST) on January 5th.
Can’t see how they are
Can’t see how they are launching this soon. There would be more leaks out there. Predicting a March launch realistically
interesting where they went
interesting where they went with a single chip in the si family dubbed greenland, to now a complete top to bottom architecture in vega
There is some marketing
There is some marketing material on the web suggesting that Vega will access to 512TB of virtual address space, can someone on the pcper staff explain what this might mean for gaming?
For gaming likely nothing.
For gaming likely nothing. Virtual address space means mapped memory outside of the physical on-board memory, therefore the latency will be much too high for pushing pixels. However for GPGPU uses this is amazing. Calculating datasets where latency isn’t as important means the GPU will be able to work on 512TB of data.
Maybe for virtural memory on
Maybe for virtural memory on those on GPU card SSD’s on some of the Radeon Pro WX SKUs (1). So a GPU than can address its own paged memory SSD texture/other swap file sapce! Ditto for the Radeon Instinct accelerator SKUs! Having that SSD integrated on the same PCIe card with the GPU does help with lanency for accesses to extra stored Textures/Data/code as AMD has demonstrated. So there is in the memory contrller of Vega the ability to generate and address up to 512TB of Memory HBM2/DRAM and DIMM based DRAM mamory along with paged memory on SSD/other up to that 512TB of address space. 512TB leaves plenty of room for future growth for supercomputer uasge and large localized data sets in RAM/virtural memory page swap close to where it’s needed.

Let hope AMD doesn’t make a
Let hope AMD doesn’t make a fool out of itself IF nvidia volta comes out superior to AMD vega.
So AMD is joking about nvidia
So AMD is joking about nvidia volta… they where cocky before and it turned out to blow in their faces (amd “marketing” team)
Hopefully this time its real and not some silly posturing.
Probably their marketing team
Probably their marketing team are being given freedom to express creativity, and they exhibit their originality without any attentive study on future repercussions or even perhaps without enough knowledge on the technical details, if they can interpret them, just enough perspective on the product from a simple chart.
LOL it’s a cheeky dig,
LOL it’s a cheeky dig, nothing more. I honestly cant see Vega coming out in the next few months and beating Volta which isnt due until late 2017 at the earliest. It’s a generation in front for a start….unless AMD/RTG pull an amazing rabbit from their hat, but I cannot see that happening as nice as it would be.
I can see Vega competing with the Pascal series and perhaps edging it on performance with 1070/1080…maybe Ti/Titan if we get lucky..but Volta…nope. That will be fought with Navi in 2018/19.
Calm down people it’s only a graphics card, not a cure for cancer.
😛
2017 will see a “refreshed”
2017 will see a “refreshed” 1070/1080.
I want VEGA!
