Dell has announced the UltraSharp 32 Ultra HD 8K Monitor (model UP3218K), which is outfitted with a 7680 x 4320 resolution panel and offers 1.07 billion colors (10-bit) with 100% sRGB and Adobe RGB coverage.

The blog post on Dell.com does not offer full specifications for the UP3218K, but there should be an official product page up in the near future as Dell announced a release date of March 23. The price? $4,999.

It would be nice to have that
It would be nice to have that kind of work pixel density, but that is a steep price. A 32 inch 4K display is only about 138 ppi, I guess. I have a 30 inch dell ultra sharp at 2560×1600, with probably less than 100 ppi. It looks great for images but text doesn’t look that good. Perhaps I have gotten used to cell phones with 300 to 400 ppi.

The problem is that NO consumer 4k or 8k monitors support the color gamut specified by the REAL 4k and 8k standard, which is Rec.2020 and much larger than Adobe RGB.
High resolution screens with terrible color are cheap. The ones that have good color require a good backlight(not WLED like most monitors use).
Ill wait until there is a monitor that supports Rec.2020 before going higher resolution than 2560×1600.

In November of 2015, I bought a car (that’s still working fine by the way), a 2006 model no less, for $5400. The point? This monitor is about as much as a decent car.
If you’re working in 8k
If you’re working in 8k digital film, you’re looking at a minimum of $30k for a bare camera (before lenses, mount, storage etc), so $5k for a monitor won’t make you blink.
For us normal folk, 4k took less than 18 months to go from $3299 to $499. My $499 4k monitor isn’t as nice as those $3299 ones, but it suits my needs just fine.

Professional film-maker equipment is NOT “yours ordinary consumerist-level camera”, big studios’ equipment is basically akin to the advanced technologies that military uses/tests. Remember, military was using GPS SEVERAL DECADES before it became available for an average consumer and turned into a mainstream thing.

Bullshit. Films will generally be shot in 4K or more recently 8K, and mastered at 4K or 2K depending on budget (CGI res is expensive yo). And for the most part distributed in 4K max (no DCI standard for 8K yet). ’32K’ is not a thing that actually exists.
As for GPS, also bullshit. The first consumer GPS receivers launched in 1989 along with the launch of the first GPS satellites (the first receivers even included availability schedulers due to the incomplete satellite constellation).

No, modern movies are shot in WAAAY more higher resolutions than you think. They just get downscaled to 1080p/4K/8K LATER, during the post-processing period.

Who cares? I have an eagle-precise eyesight and I can work just fine even with 100% scaling while on Windows 7 (not even 8 or 10) and with 4K 27″, so I highly doubt that 8K at 32″ will be of any problem for me personally. And, besides…ALL DAT SPACE FOR SHORTCUT ICONS…

Man this is cool looking but there was a 4K OLED that was supposed to drop last year in March for 5,000 and it never dropped. Dell couldn’t launch that now at 5,000 and its sight unseen.

What kind of hardware would it take to run Crysis 3 or the Witcher 3 with all settings maxed with this monitor?
I am not sure a Titan XP sli setup would get you playable frames at this resolution in most AAA titles.

Does this technically support HDR? 10-bit color support is only part of HDR; I assume that it would need to suppory HRD metadata also. It is still a bit unclear to me what it will take to support HDR on computer displays. I thought that UWP applications run essentially in a windowed mode, even when full screen. It his seems like it would require support for HDR on the desktop; how will this work?

Asus’ upcoming 4K 144 Hz HDR monitor uses IPS tech. It can show HDR just fine. LG got loads of IPS TV’s with HDR support too.
Even a TN panel would benefit from HDR, but they are limited to 6+2 bit
