So much for your excuses, if you have sworn that you are abandoning Microsoft because of Windows 10 then start migrating to Mac or Linux and shrink their market share. Wine 2.0 just dropped, allowing you to continue to use your Windows programs and play your games on Mac or Linux. Shader Model 4 and 5 support has been improved, DX9, Direct3D 10 and Direct3D 11 all are improved or added for your visual enjoyment. If you want to make a statement to Microsoft then hit them where it hurts and head over to Slashdot to start your journey onto a competitors OS.
"It's finally here! After so many months of development and hard work, during which over 6,600 bugs have been patched, the Wine project is happy to announce today, January 24, 2017, the general availability of Wine 2.0. Wine 2.0 is the biggest and most complete version of the open-source software project that allows Linux and macOS users to run applications and games designed only for Microsoft Windows operating systems."

can I start WINE-ing about
can I start WINE-ing about the double post. 🙂
I would love to do this
I would love to do this except as a gamer this just isn’t feasible since so many games don’t support linux.
You don’t know Wine. Read
You don’t know Wine. Read the article before you comment.
Last time I tried Wine it was
Last time I tried Wine it was pretty hit and miss.
Unless it has been vastly improved (which it very well could be, admittedly it was about 2 years ago last time I tried it) I wouldn’t replace Windows on my gaming box.
Truth be told however, I quite like Windows 10. Though Ubuntu will always have a special place in my heart as well. XD
And this post reeks of paid
And this post reeks of paid advertising provided to you by microsoft. Windows 10 sucks. You can use windows 7 and not install the spyware patches if you want to game.
“And this post reeks of paid

Really?
Because I have a different opinion than you I’m somehow a paid Microsoft shill?
Grow up.
There are a number of
There are a number of commentators who have the deeply held belief that disagreeing with their opinions is proof of bias.
Try not to feed them.
Maybe if they made Wine
Maybe if they made Wine easier to set up, I ran Linux for a year after getting tired of windows 7 being garbage. I remember Indiana Jones having having less complicated steps in The Last Crusade. I don’t get the Win10 hate… Literally half the resources used in idle should be enough. If it’s a privacy issue I’m sure Crapple would be more than happy to sell your data.
There is a program that
There is a program that solves that called PlayOnLinux. It makes installing and running Windows software under Linux easy/easier/simple. It does almost all the heavy lifting for you.
The other excellent alternative especially if you have a CPU that supports it and a spare GPU or iGPU/APU is running Windows in a KVM with PCI-Passthrough. This equals negligible or no performance loss when gaming and other tasks.
Wendell from the former TekSyndicate was playing GTA V in a KVM on Linux using Skylake CPU with no noticeable performance loss.
Why the hell should we care
Why the hell should we care about what apple does or any other company. I don’t want my computer to be infested with spyware. End of discussion. Is that really so hard for you to understand. Microsoft can go fuck themselves and you too.
The purpose of WINE is to run
The purpose of WINE is to run applications on Linux that weren’t designed to run on Linux. Previous support isn’t required.
One option that works for
One option that works for some people is Linux + Steam + WINE and a gaming console. The only PC game not available natively for Linux that I care about is StarCraft 2, and that runs on Wine. It’s slower on Wine than on Windows and I have to dial back the graphics settings, but it runs.
For everything else I want to play, if I can’t get it on Linux I can get it on PlayStation.
If your favorite PC games aren’t on Linux and don’t work well on Wine, Windows is your only option.
The are many other things
The are many other things that you have to mess with to get working, I have installed wine and still had issues you have to fight with. It really makes wanting to switch to linux on my main rig not worth it. While its great wine is progressing until its a 100% works no matter what distro or program not worth it. You also loose performance when you add layers, so again makes it not as friendly.
I was under the impression
I was under the impression that WINE is a re implementation of the windows api calls and therefore does not add any extra layers. In theory it should not run any slower (like I say in theory). I run it in mint (KDE edition) with no problems. It installed easy and no problems installing and running most of the software I used in Windows. The games don’t generally run, not that I have tried a lot of games. but most of the applications I need do with no noticeable performance difference.

This is good progress in
This is good progress in every way. WINE works quite well with many applications and with lot’s of older games. At the same time Linux as a gaming platform has evolved by big leaps in a relatively small time frame. And if we consider that WINE provides some real alternatives to those that really need them, so that it further makes it easier to take those crucial first steps towards privacy respecting computing to those that currently hold the view that future in a general Windows direction looks quite grim.
Microsoft Spyware
Microsoft Spyware 2015…oops, I mean Windows 10…was the last straw for me in terms of trusting Microsoft. I’m only holding out at the moment because of Adobe (I do photography).
Just out of curiosity what
Just out of curiosity what Phone/OS do you use on mobile?
I only ask because most people who rag on Windows 10 for it’s telemetry/snooping, but then give Google, Apple, and the myriad of app developers a free pass.
Nokia + symbian here. It
Nokia + symbian here. It ain’t a huge smartphone, just a phone. Battery lasts about 7 days and it charges quickly. And as far as I am aware, it doesn’t scan the contents of my phone and take those results somewhere to be datamined by something/someone.
Who is your carrier? Unless
Who is your carrier? Unless it’s Credomobile you aren’t really doing much for privacy by going with an old phone…. Oh no they see you have 2gbs of pictures? Meanwhile they know where you are, who you talk/text to.

your argument can be countered by using AOSP (latest android version) roms.
most people who value their privacy dont use stock roms.
but can you suggest a “latest” windows version that can be stripped off its spy layers ?
A fair point, and exactly why
A fair point, and exactly why I asked. 🙂 The techies among us can avoid this type of privacy infringement if they desire.
My observation (in my life among those around me anyway) is that most people who get upset about Windows 10 privacy issues, give the rest of them a free pass. And most of them wouldn’t know how to flash a new ROM even with a highly detailed step by step guide in front of their face. XD
I have even gotten emails warning about privacy concerns from friends using gmail accounts. It cracks me up every time. Lol
The NSA likley made Windows
The NSA likley made Windows 10. It has all the illegal data collection in it.
Anything with proprietary
Anything with proprietary aspects can have data collection in it, and it’s extremely difficult to figure it out. The NSA could have served surveillance warrants to Apple, Samsung, and Google and they could have put snooping code into the iPhone, the Galaxy S7, or Chromebooks. Consumers would probably never find out.
Linux is open source, and Android and Chrome OS use Linux. But Google Play services and Chrome browser are proprietary, and most of the Android cellular modems are proprietary. So they can still insert surveillance code.
So while it makes sense to hate Microsoft for this, it does not make sense to hate only Microsoft for it.
In my experience, for my
In my experience, for my particular tastes, I’ve found that Linux support is one of the hallmarks of a game that I’m likely to enjoy. They are often ‘by geeks, for geeks’, and ‘labours of love’, rather than ‘filthy console ports’. Searching for Linux-compatible games on Steam really cuts the wheat from the chaff, IMO.
Not using W10 here
Not using W10 here so….mission accomplished?
Hoping W7 will last till steamOS comes out(and also hope that steamOS has had a lot of work put in to get games working well)
It will last. Just like XP
It will last. Just like XP still works. And Vista. Haha.
Windows 10 is much better than 7. Faster. Better performance. Got all new features.
Many games perform better in Windows 10. Windows 10 is the primary focus for dev’s for the PC platform. SteamOS is already a failure and it will lack too many games (Steam lacks many games and SteamOS won’t get as many) and performance will be worse in 99.9% of the games compared to Windows version.
I’m using Arch Linux, Windows 10 and OSX on daily basis. Windows 7 already feels outdated compared to all of these.
Feel your post needs some
Feel your post needs some correction.
You need to back this claim up that windows 10 is faster than windows 7 because in my experience it is not, and especially the case on low end systems where the disk thrashing caused by the telemetry data collection can get out of control.
Also there is 100s of thousands of game on the PC platform, the majority of games been made even in 2017 are DX9 based, not even DX11 never mind DX12. The reason is the developers want a large pool of customers, and DX9 has a bigger net.
The only publisher I am aware off that has gone windows 10 exclusive is you guessed it, microsoft.
Some other publishers are adding DX12 support but its not their focus, DX11 or DX9 is the focus for 99% of the games.
I think most of us are hoping for vulkan to win out as it doesnt lock people into one single operating system.
I think your post you have just looked at the highly marketed AAA titles and assumed that is “most of the market”.
“hit them where it hurts”
ms
“hit them where it hurts”
ms as a cloud first mobile first company couldnt care less about the consumer based pc market. Keep telling yourselves we still matter when all evidence points the other way, except maybe a few ms execs paying lipservice.
Good thing their mobile
Good thing their mobile (phone) department is doing so well with that sub-1% marketshare.
For years after partnering with the NFL, many players, coaches and broadcasters still refer to their Surface Pro’s as “iPads,” or just “tablets.”
It’s absolutely hilarious watching Microsoft tumble trying to engross themselves in a market they didn’t monopolize during the pioneering stages of the technology.
(this is irrelevant to a
(this is irrelevant to a thread about WINE, but I canna delete my stupid comment)
I tried Linux (Mint & Ubuntu)
I tried Linux (Mint & Ubuntu) with PoL & Wine, Z97 + Gtx 970 & again with R9 390.
Couldn’t get any games to run. Rocket League, no. World of Tanks, No. Overwatch, No.
Warcraft 3 had ‘native’ support inside Play on Linux & that wouldn’t run either.
So Im obviously doing something wrong, and the learning curve / reward ratio is too much for me right now.
I’d love to use linux, but with so much out there, I can never find the answeres I need to get it working.
The only decent game for
The only decent game for Linux steam is War Thunder and that’s for everything.
I can’t say I’ve had any
I can’t say I’ve had any trouble with my two go-to favorites of CSGO and Quake.
When it comes to playing games on Linux, you need to make sure you’re running the latest available Mesa build, have a recent kernel, and have the latest GPU firmware loaded for your kernel or you will be in for a world of hurt though.
Wine 2.0 and more
Wine 2.0 and more improvements is good news and by 2020 there will be more Wine improvements to help many break away from M$’s grasp. Linux and Vulkan development for gaming will allow many to get rid of the windows ecosystem dependency for gaming also. M$ has no phone OS market to begin with and many will not ever have their PCs/laptops turned into a phone appliance ecosystem under windows 10.
Windows 7 can be easily hosted(Locked Down) inside a Linux OS based VM environment with no internet access allowed after 2020 for those that want to run any windows software that Wine can not run after windows 7’s EOL.
What there needs to be a push for some Zen/Vega APU based Linux OS based OEM laptop options to give consumers a lower cost choice for Linux OS based laptops instead of the more costly Intel/Nvidia options that currently have the majority of the market share for Linux OS based OEM laptops.
I’ve tried wine and to be
I’ve tried wine and to be honest, it actually slows the system down to the point of unsusability. Not to mention that most games are going for dx12 now or it’s equivalent. Also I actually quite enjoy Windows 10.
The GPU drivers for Windows
The GPU drivers for Windows are way better. The Linux ones are improving, but we’re years away from parity and DX12 support.
I can play StarCraft 2 fine with open source drivers on Wine with an AMD Radeon 5770 on one machine and an RX 480 on the other, but I have to dial the graphics settings way down to get the same fps that I get on Windows. That’s good enough for me, I love Linux. But I understand why most gamers won’t make that sacrifice to avoid using Windows.
99% of pc games made in the
99% of pc games made in the last 12 months are developed for DX9 or DX11.
A very tiny fraction of the market specifically highly marketed AAA titles have bolted on DX12 support.
Microsoft is the only publisher that has made DX12 a requirement.
Why bother with this when you
Why bother with this when you can just dual boot if you like to use Linux for most things? Running games on Linux doesn’t make sense to me since Linux almost invariably performs worse.
Thanks for this guys! I
Thanks for this guys! I upgraded WINE tonight and was able to get WoW running really well. Still only about 70% of the quality and performance I get from Windows 10, but much better.
So funny this was posted, I
So funny this was posted, I literly just dumped windows, Im sick of it, telemerty, updates and update services getting turned back on after being disabled!!!! Are serious Microsft?! Are you wanting to fail?
Anywho, Over the past 2 months Ive tried 25-30 distros, With Zorin, Fedora, and Manjaro being my favorites but ended up on Mint as it seems to be the fastest for me. Yeah I cant play all games but there is enough, and just in the last week or 2 I see no need to go back…Ive even got my workplace to start converting over to Linux, and its been great! Like a breath of fresh air! I think if you hate Windows just for the simple fact they shouldn’t have done these shady things, you should move over, unless you are a hardcore gamer, and even then….learn something new, put GTA5 down for 5 mins, Lol.
I started with 32-bit Linux
I started with 32-bit Linux Mint 7 and stayed with it until Linux Mint 16. Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon started crashing on me, and I switched to 64-bit Manjaro Cinnamon.
Now I am running Manjaro Budgie/Cinnamon/Gnome/KDE/LXQt desktops. Today I installed the newer Kernel 4.9.X in all my Dell XPS 8700 desktops.
I really like Manjaro Budgie Linux because it is very streamlined. It works like a charm.
So after you get tired of good old Linux Mint, come back to Manjaro Linux. Manjaro Team is great. These people work very hard.

You Microsoft slaves do not
You Microsoft slaves do not yet know how good Linux really is.
I am not a gamer, and I hate stupid games.
Now let me tell you a few things about Linux:
Linux has come a long way and is now the dominante operating system for the servers where smart software engineers can do a lot of things with Linux.
Now on the desktop, I am running Manjaro Budgie/Cinnamon/Gnome/LXQt/KDE. All these desktops work great.
Linux Kernel 4.9.2 + google-chrome is an awesome combo for the internet browsing.
In few years your windows will bite the dust. Did you know that the Google-Chrome is now the dominante browser?
What happened to the Windows Media Player? It is gone forever.
I never get this message in Linux:
“Your PC ran into trouble… blah blah blah”
For the record, the “my way
For the record, the “my way is better than your way you stupid peasant” approach is not the right way to try to convince anyone of anything.
No thanks. I only want to
No thanks. I only want to use the best…Windows 10.
Telling to people to shut up,
Telling to people to shut up, switch to Linux and be grateful that you spend your hard earned money on OS that has quite of a number of bugs,(but it did improve to be fair), invasion of privacy, annoy adverts and silently install apps/bloatware is not a smart thing to do.
And plus you still need to pay windows license if you want to keep your settings/software/progression and not re-creating a new sandbox after every 30 days. And Linux has a lot of hardware limitation support like SLI and Crossfire for example.(I’m not very sure if SLI and Crossfire is supported now as I mainly use my Linux as router now)
You can take the horse to the
You can take the horse to the water. If the the horse does not want to drink nothing you can do.
People got tired of Internet explorer and now people are switching to google-chrome in millions.
So everything has to wait for the appropriate time.
Microsoft is harassing millions of people and damaging their computers but the people are slaves of their habits.
I tell people not to smoke but they are so addicted that they are helpless.
So one day windows addiction will die and the people will be free from their pains.
I wasted many months on Windows 10 but finally I wiped the crap OS out from my machine.
I still have Windows 8.1 but I rarely use it.
I have been using cedega and
I have been using cedega and wine ever since I started using linux in like 2000-2001.
But saying it has DX10 and DX11 support is a bit of an over statement.
I run 2.0-rc3, it can run doom 3 and works fine for that atm.
I have played a bunch of games trough it but lately World of Warships, Skyrim have been some of them but both have suffered from bugs and performance issues from time to time.
But getting games that “require” DX11 like Fallout 4 to run is as fare as I know impossible. Still no reports of success and I have not managed to get DX11 to work.
After one of my games “broke” and refuses to work after an update I eventually got my self a budget AMD card and set up qemu with Wondows 10, for some reason I also got a legit Windows 10 pro license when running it in in QEMU so total cost was like 80 USD.
Anyway after a few days of fiddling with VT-d and IOMMU in the kernel and bios and configuring qemu any my Linux host, pinning qemu threads to actual cores for optimal performances in games etc.
Now I can play Windows games basically with native performance. Sure my AMD R7 240 is SLOW but it works and I even overclocked it with 30% so it can run what I need in low to medium settings.
My monitor has 4 inputs and I told qemu my USB devices unique ID numbers so no mater what USB port is used it will always grab my keyboard, mouse and USB headset when I lunch the VM and so far no crash at all in like a month, it just works.
I hope to upgrade to an RX460-480 or similar later now that it works and I hope to replace my PCI sound card with USB one to free up a slot because atm Im limited to a single slot GFX card for the VM.
But anyway running a proper virtual machine with VGA pass-trough hands down wins in my book.
I do like Wine but the slow phase of DX11 support makes it harder and harder to make modern games run in wine.
Anyway hardware virtualisation can be used for any other OS then windows to and it works realy nice if your CPU and MB supports it properly.
Bit of work and research to get it going but when it works its so awesome its so worth it.
My next PC will for sure run dual operating systems running at all times with there own dedicated GFX cards, linux as the host for everything else that is not windows related.
having the cookie and eat it at the same time is so nice.
