[H]ard|OCP took a look into the effect on performance the gigantic high resolution texture pack has on system performance in their latest article. For those who want the answer immediately, the largest amount of VRAM they saw utilized was a hair over 5GB, in most cases more than double the usage that the default textures use. This certainly suggests that those with 4GB cards should reconsider installing the texture pack and that a 6GB card shouldn't see performance impacts. As for the performance deltas, well we can't provide spoilers for their entire review!
"Bethesda has released its official High Resolution Texture Pack DLC for Fallout 4. We will look at performance impact, VRAM capacity usage levels, and compare image quality to see if this High Resolution Texture Pack might be worthy of your bandwidth in actually improving the gameplay experience."

Forgetting about Arkham
Forgetting about Arkham Knight, Watch Dogs 2, and others?
mega-textures are nothing new
mega-textures are nothing new to this engine this goes all the way back to rage.
Most stones/rocks and trees,
Most stones/rocks and trees, as well as absolute majority of grass and road textures still look like they’re from early 2008, even after applying this so-called “patch”. Absolutely DISGUSTING. “Thanks, GayBryo”.
Looking at the comparisons it
Looking at the comparisons it is pretty appalling how low res the previous ‘ultra’ quality textures were.
Not as much of a “low-res”
Not as much of a “low-res” rather than just “soaped up”. That’s what you get when a game is designed “with consoles in mind”.
Lulz at Hardocp. Fury X
Lulz at Hardocp. Fury X ‘feels’ stuttery yet the frame rate graph is almost identical. Either bias or you have no confidence in your own data…
Could be due to frame times.
Could be due to frame times.
Could be, point is they
Could be, point is they didn’t back up their claim with data. It doesn’t help their credibility.
The subjective review of the images with the slider overlay on the other hand greatly helps me appreciate the improved texture quality. I can’t believe how bad the original textures actually are. It’s like putting vaseline on your eyeballs, it’s so bad.
I really hope they use a completely new engine for the next game.
They DID have a frametime
They DID have a frametime graph and it was virtually identical between both scenarios.
That website does not do
That website does not do objective FCAT analysis, so they do NOT do objective observations. Those jittery claims are subjective and unsubstantiated.
Still not helping, they need
Still not helping, they need to upgrade their outdated game engine.
Seriously, it’s been
Seriously, it’s been “””””outdated””””” (read as in “absolute necroware”) pretty much all the way back since Oblivion, in all honesty. Yeah, THAT long ago it was already an absolutely dead cow, but Toddie-Todd still milks it (and boy-oh-boy he milks that almost-completely-decomposed dead cow HAAARD). And they’ll probably continue on milking it at least a decade more (even when the corpse becomes a skeleton). Todd Howard in particular and Bethesda in overall is DE FACTO the main reason why we can’t have nice things.
well hey, if activision can
well hey, if activision can get away with recycling the same damn engine every year for cod, why can’t bethesda get away with it too?
Because CoDs, regardless of
Because CoDs, regardless of how bad they are, are still complete games in themselves, products on which developers worked to the end. Yes those games are bad, but AT THE VERY LEAST THEY ARE COMPLETE.
Bethesda’s and Toddie-Todd’s SCHLOCK is not like that at all, on the other hand. They “release” a half-baked, underdeveloped, buggy-as-all-Fs crap, and they fully expect for the end user (modder commune and all that) to FIX their SHIT for YEARS to come before it because at least SOMEWHAT decent. And those ASSHOLES been doing this CRAP since Oblivion, which is indisputably complete and utter MESS in it’s “vanilla” state. Morrowind was DE FACTO the last game so far that Bethesda actually did well, not relying SOLELY on “extended support by a modding community”. Morrowind can be played all way through without any mods whatsoever at all just fine, it’s an absolutely self-sustained game. Oblivion, on the hand, is NOT. It’s mindbogglingly BAD in it’s “vanilla” form. So this ASSHATTERY of Bethesda’s began with Oblivion.
You take these games a bit
You take these games a bit too seriously.
It’s a game.
Fallout 4 is probably Bethesda’s best selling game of all time.
If people didn’t like the games, they wouldn’t mod them.
Why are you so angry?
Ain’t even angry yet. Believe

Nobody cares.

Clearly you do, because you
Clearly you do, because you had to write that lame crap to begin with.

“SGRAM”
If you’re going to pedant, at least pedant correctly. Besides, vRAM is Video RAM, which is correct. One of the cards tested is NOT using GDDR (and instead using HBM) so your pedantry is not even correct even if it weren’t spelt incorrectly.
I think I will stick with my
I think I will stick with my Nexus mods, they look better and smaller downloads
You can have better looking
You can have better looking textures in Fallout 4 by using SweetFX + ReShade. No need for downloading 50 GB, no performance hit and no need for 8 GB Video Card….
