The tick-tock of Intel's waltz has stuttered a bit, with many users wondering if it is worth picking up a new Kaby Lake based system. Gone are the good old days when a new generation of processors guaranteed enough of an increase in performance to justify decreasing your bank account immediately. There are several reasons for this, including the difficulties in reducing the size of the process and increasing the amount of transistors, not just the current lack of competition in the marketplace.
At The Tech Report, one of their staff were curious enough to do the upgrade, dumping their i7-2600K for an i7-7700k. Check out the results of the upgrade, with some impressive effect on the wonky but beloved Arma III engine.
"The question of whether it's worth upgrading from Intel's Sandy Bridge chips accompanies every new TR CPU review. For one TR contributor, the arrival of Kaby Lake finally motivated him to make a move. See what the upgrade to a more modern platform did for him."

ARMA III is somewhat RAM
ARMA III is somewhat RAM speed limited; the same setup with a 6-core sandy bridge (and quad channel DDR3) runs a lot closer to the 7700K performance shown, despite the extra mhz of the 7700K.
Seems really weird for a tech journalist to spend money on an upgrade right now when Ryzen is coming soon and even if Ryzen isn’t = to 7700K for games, it’s going to put pricing pressure on 7700K from above (6-8 cores) and below..
This year is the year huh?

Can’t argue that, seeing as
Can't argue that, seeing as how that is how he described his own thought process about the purchase.
Arma III is actually going
Arma III is actually going 64bit shortly this year. Expect it to no longer be RAM limited.
Last time I checked 60fps is
Last time I checked 60fps is double of 30fps so I will upgrade when I get double the performance in games.
the title should be “Should
the title should be “Should you hang out on the Bridge, or is it worth heading onto the Lake if you only use your computer in AI-heavy scenario’s of Arma III”
Accurate … but a bit long.

Holy crap that’s a huge jump!
Holy crap that’s a huge jump! Still on the 2600K myself. No money to upgrade. 🙁
This article seems quite
This article seems quite silly to me, by a silly person, the argument has holes and all resting on an extreme and limited edge case.
A reporter justifying his own purchase, like John H said just wait a little while for the drop in price.
But the article is even more silly when thinking on what he writes.
so he don’t upgrade unless he really have to, why did he have to now. the game he’s citing has been out forever. why just this second.
At AMD ryzen 1 week away publish this silly thing.
But regardless of motivations:
If all you ever want out of your PC for the following 5+ years (if for that journalist usage is the same in coming years) is to play that SAME game sure. however there may be other usage out of a computer in the following 5 even 7 years hell more if what ppl are saying of the future of CPU development. until he gets to buy a new CPU.
so under all those years. will he only use a insanely broken game. Only surf the web and game? And then only the edge case cherry picked to make his argument?
If as we have lerned through other PCPER article we will only see around 10% per generation for the foreseeing decade. perhaps usage in 5years may be helped by more cores for instance.
also, IF he this reporter surfed the web he’d learn that yes, click-speed on Ryzen will be lower, But IPC will not.
added to this the article is full of example centences which bases choices on guesswork on strengths of brands rather than examples and fact. he “does not think” amd will do this or that.
sure think away but do at least read the news.
Bad article, and bad of PCPER to reprint it here.
Or maybe it was a personal
Or maybe it was a personal decision he made based on what he does with the machine, which also he published to show interested parties what the effect on his usage was … and not the reverse as you postulate?
You may disagree with everything about the post but that does not automatically make it bad or silly for everyone else. I certainly found it interesting.
Please elaborate on
Please elaborate on interesting? If you play ARMA do you play only the single player or only the mulitplayer? Multiplayer wouldn’t require AI-heavy scenarios. If you only play single player, why do you keep replaying it? I am personally interested in ARMA but for some reason i can’t seem to get into the game. I wouldn’t mind an article or a conversation on the merits of that game. THAT would be interesting to me.
This
“Should you hang out on the Bridge, or is it worth heading onto the Lake if you only use your computer in AI-heavy scenario’s of Arma III”
not very interesting as you could just answer the question in the long title. with a “…YES… YES IT IS Trust us.”
Sorry for the spoiler for those that were really wanting to read that entire article.
Interesting … something
Interesting … something which I personally found informative and worth reading. Your results may vary but you don't get input on what I feel.
The title of that blurb is
The title of that blurb is really click-bait-ee. He simply puts “77000k vs 2600k” and that is it. Anyone that’s looking into cpu vs cpu is basically going to expect a suite of benchmarks run and not just one single game that is heavily cpu bound.
He should have either said something like “arma 3: 7700k vs 2600k” as the title, or done a round of tests and published the results.
Your title is not very
Your title is not very interesting and contains no puns.
It would also suggest to Arma fans that there was an article devoted to how their game runs, as opposed to someone who upgraded their personal machine and was kind enough to take a few minutes to share the results with anyone who was interested.

You really can’t go stupider than this, folks. Clinical case of an Intelgoym right there.

I have a 3570k (Stock) and it does everything I want it to do fine. FarCry Primal, BF4, WoW, FallOut 4, etc all play well (Also 8 gigs ddr 3, gtx 960 4 gb). I can max the graphics on all those games no problem (minus AA as I just don’t really see it) at 1080p.
That being said, I am sure my next cpu/mobo upgrade will be Zen at some point in the future. Will enjoy running an AMD setup again. Looking forward to AMD/Intel price war. Looking forward to all the upcoming reviews and benchmarks also, particularly here on pcper.com.
I wonder if Ryan and all mind if longtime readers just stop in the offices at Louisville to say hello? I am probably gonna be in town next summer. I don’t live but a few hours away in anyway in Columbus, Ohio.
