The open source API, Vulkan, just received a big birthday present from Intel as they added official support on their Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs under Windows 10. We have seen adoption of this API from a number of game engine designers, Unreal Engine and Unity have both embraced it, the latest DOOM release was updated to support Vulkan and there is even a Nintendo 64 renderer which runs on it. Ars Technica points out that both AMD and NVIDIA have been supporting this API for a while and that we can expect to see Android implementations of this close to the metal solution in the near future.
"After months in beta, Intel's latest driver for its integrated GPUs (version 15.45.14.4590) adds support for the low-overhead Vulkan API for recent GPUs running in Windows 10. The driver supports HD and Iris 500- and 600-series GPUs, the ones that ship with 6th- and 7th-generation Skylake and Kaby Lake processors."

The best N64 renderer out there is the Glide plugin. So yeah, not the greatest example.
On the contrary, the use of
On the contrary, the use of the Vulkan API is significant in that context as it allows Low-level emulation. “Indiana Jones and The Emperors Tomb”, for example, actually boots and is playable to some degree, in some form. I’ve run it myself. There are literally Zero other emulators/plugins that can boast that (I’ve looked). There are a few other games that other emulators and plugins can’t run, but that’s the one that comes to mind at the moment.
^ I concur. N64 is literally
^ I concur. N64 is literally the hardest to properly emulate out there. If this can do it well its a break through.

I was thinking the same. So
I was thinking the same. So Intel supports Vulkan, but so what? Is there any performance increase?
Based on PCGamer’s article,
Based on PCGamer’s article, about Intel supporting Vulkan, no. The performance is the same as OpenGL. They tested it, it works, but no difference in performance. Well, that’s what happens when you put a slow GPU next to a very fast CPU. But, I wonder if there is any difference in power consumption.

Not for PCs under windows if
Not for PCs under windows if Intel only provides Vulkan drivers under windows 10 only! There has to be support for 7/8.1 or some will have to wait for more Linux laptop support as they want to avoid windows 10! Windows 10 support should not be a reason to celebrate Vulkan’s success as there needs to be support for 7/8.1 for that success to be real.
Vulkan will already be in use across the majority of the mobile market running under the Linux Kernel so who needs windows 10 and it’s closed down ecosystem under Vulkan and more than Windows 10 under DX12! This is not good news at all for Vulkan.
Where is the Vulkan support for earlier Intel SKUs under windows 7/8.1.

Given the only noticeable
Given the only noticeable games to use this api was battlefield 4 and DOOM, it’s safe to say that gaming on intel gpu’s has about as much chance of taking off along with vulkan, as gaming on linux does. This stuff sounds good on paper, but no one is likely to use it outside of a few. It’s great to have the choice but if any is going to the norm, it’ll be DX12.
Here’s a noteworthy trend, Anything leans toward Linux over Windows never goes mainstream. Steam OS, Steam Machines, Mantle, Vulkan, gaming on Linux.
Sounds harsh but it’s true.
Linux is like that Jehovah witness who keeps knocking your door, refusing to go away. We’re fine with Windows, we understand your cause but no thank you.
Is that you Ballmer, are you
Is that you Ballmer, are you afraid that windows 10 is not going to be very popular in the end and that Vulkan will be the more widely used graphics API in the mobile world that M$ could not get its grubby little fingers around to trottle any competition. Vulkan wll also be on full Linux distros for PC/Laptops that will keep Redmond out of every gamers hair after 2020 and 7’s EOL.
DX12 comes for Mantle Just like Vulkan but folks are not liking windows 10 with the spyware and ad pushing or the forcing of updates that install more adware and spyware. As the end user uninstalls the crap with the very next forced update the ball of crapware is reinstalled on that crapware infested windows 10!
You big fat sweaty Ape! The developers developers developers are going to be developing more for the mobile market and not for any OS ecosystem from Redmond and M$ can only bork its Desktop users systems in its failed attempt at turning a productive desktop ecosystem into a Candy Crush of unproductive crapware crApp store toxic waste!
