KB4012982 describes the error you will see if you attempt to update Windows 7 or 8.x on 7th generation Intel processors, AMD Bristol Ridge and newer or Qualcomm "8996" and more recent models. Microsoft has implemented the hardware based obsolescence which they had discussed several months ago when they stated that new chips would need Windows 10 to run. This move will of course be heralded as brilliant and no one could possibly find this upsetting in the least, especially not in this Reddit thread. It is a good thing Microsoft does not have a near monopoly in the market and that anyone who does not support this decision can choose from a wide variety of easily implemented alternatives.
Expect there to be workarounds, the vast majority of Enterprise customers have no interest in moving their infrastructure to Windows 10, nor the budget available to do so if they wanted.
"Microsoft has started the process of built-in obsolescence to current hardware by blocking updates of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to Intel 7th Generation (Kaby Lake), AMD Ryzen and Qualcomm Snapdragon 82x processors."

This will backfire on M$,
This will backfire on M$, leading to everyone keeping their old hardware, including almost all enterprise customers, and hardware vendors blaming M$ for plummeting sales.
Most of the enterprise
Most of the enterprise customers are using Linux for their server systems with any windows 10 enterprise version having ways to lock out most of that crap that the consumer customers are stuck with!
And you can be damned sure that any server clients of M$ can still run windows 7(Bare metal if needed) on their Zen/Naples systems once those arrive in larger numbers beyond the review/testing(with RTM versions of Zen/Naples SKUs) servers that are already in the hands of server clients as I write this post!
I’ll bet that there will be some Big windows 7 clients getting some special windows 7/Ryzen and Xeon windows 7/OS builds custom made to work on the new hardware if that’s what the customer’s contract(Custom Contract) requires!
Big Money contracts Talks, consumer fool MOOKs walk!
Linux is looking better and better as M$’s real consumer market intentions become more apparent! Both Tim S. and The Gaben are correct, M$ has a big monopoly land grab in store for your third party OEM produced PC/Laptop hardware.
The enterprise customers can force M$ with their fat Enterprise wallets to comply! So now it’s time for all the consumers to pool their resources and make for one giant size blocked wallet that M$ will not be able to ignore.
Really M$ would be better to be broken up as an abusive Monopoly Interest and Satya(The Cloud) Nadella sent packing off with the enterprise/cloud part of the split! The consumer OS market needs more choice without any Apple style closed ecosystem market milking!
Folks third party OEM produced PC/Laptops and home built(PCs) only need an OS that works for the consumer and NOT for M$’s greedy Monopolistic ambitions!
They really seem to try
They really seem to try whatever they possibly can to force people on to Windows 10, instead of just letting Win10’s strengths draw people to it naturally. All it does is anger people.
correct me if I’m wrong on
correct me if I’m wrong on this, but don’t many businesses/enterprises use a dept/server/service to download windows updates and then from there, those updates are curated and packaged to be sent out to the machines from that dept/server/service?
So the end result is, laptops/desktops/etc don’t get their updates directly from MS and could potentially have new hardware running win7 still getting updates
Yes WSUS, SCCM and a variety
Yes WSUS, SCCM and a variety of other ways to pick and choose which patches are distributed to clients. It may be as simple as blocking a certain patch or modifying a registry setting.
We will let you know as we hear more, now to make sure we can prevent it from spreading at my day job.
I don’t see a problem.
You
I don’t see a problem.
You can still install Windows 10 and activate it with Windows 7/8.1 product key.
There’s no need to purchase a new copy of Windows.
If you have software that’s incompatible with Windows 10, Intel and AMD still sell plenty of processors that are supported by Windows 7/8.1. You can also run those applications on a virtual machine

Good riddance. No sane person
Good riddance. No sane person wants another Windows XP. The support period for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 have both ended (ESR is security patch only), so anyone expecting updates has only themselves to blame.
Windows 8.1 doesn’t reach end
Windows 8.1 doesn’t reach end of mainstream support for another 9 months however that’s besides the point, when people bought a copy of Windows it came with an agreement that Microsoft would provide extended support for 10 years.
That agreement to address vulnerabilities in their OS for 10 years wasn’t hardware dependent it was an absolute, one they’re arguably still honoring as this isn’t about them not issuing patches, it’s about them crippling their automatic updating system dependent on what hardware it detects.
“it came with an agreement
“it came with an agreement that Microsoft would provide extended support for 10 years.”
Extended Support means they will release patches to security issues, not support you doing a fresh install on newly released hardware.
Who said anything about
Who said anything about support when installing on newly released hardware, Microsoft said they’d address any security vulnerabilities for 10 years irregardless of the underlying hardware.
Why’s it so difficult for some people to differentiate between security related updates and updates to support new features/hardware.
Stop your bitchings you fat
Stop your bitchings you fat sweety Ballmer Ape! Windows 7 has been the new XP since that Metro Modern TIFKAM renamed to UWP under Spyware 10 crAPP M$ store crappy to the max winblows 8 nonsense started!
Windows 7 Is the last M$ OS and there is no M$ OS afterwards! All that “OS” windows 10 is afterall is just a milking scheme and consumer metrics gathering spyware system and nothing more! M$ is after that 30% of the top action on your Pawned and Owned by the Lords of Redmond window 10 “OS” PC/laptop hardware.
Windows 8.1 is still under mainstream support until 2018 and for security only until 2023, and 7’s security only updates last until 2020! So GTFO with your lies and other crap!
I mean why comment if you are
I mean why comment if you are going to be wishy-washy on it.

I want to buy you an expensive drink and lunch after reading your post.
Whats the big deal? Windows 7
Whats the big deal? Windows 7 is a old os. Microsoft doesn’t need to support legacy devices. Most consumer device you buy come with Windows 10 anyways. Windows 10 Is the future and modern operating system.
The hellish future of a
The hellish future of a closed “OS” ecosystem dystopian nightmare where people do not have any control over their own PC/Laptop Hardware!
Please watch this commerical while we delay your system boot up, or while your game loads with a slight delay, or during the game, or while you need to get something done.
Do you want to save your game progress today little Jonny? Well just watch this commercial and fill out the servey at the end! Oh and do not foget M$’s 30% off of the top of your allowence, we would not want our shareholders to suffer for little Jonny’s sake!
Max Headroom, I know your are out there somewhere! So Please fill free to chime in at any time! Because this very very Daft person thinks “Whats the big deal?”!
No they don’t need to support
No they don’t need to support legacy devices past the mainstream support period, however this has nothing to do with legacy devices or supporting newer hardware, it’s to do with the agreement Microsoft made with it’s customers that it would address any issues found within the OS that it sold to customers for 10 years, that agreement wasn’t dependent on what hardware the OS was running on, it was an absolute.
People claiming this is because of newer hardware are demonstrating unbelievable naivety as security related updates are still going to be available, via the Windows update catalog, WSUS, and businesses, they’re just not going to be available via Windows built in updating system because Microsoft intendeds to disable that system when it detect particular hardware.
Dick move. He who controls
Dick move. He who controls the coins bla bla bla, DICK MOVE. Nothing surprising tho.
Just a natural next stage of
Just a natural next stage of MS’s egoistic, monopolist efforts to push their youngest baby on even more users.
Really silly one tho, without any logical foundation.
Combine this with Microsoft
Combine this with Microsoft throwing ads on the windows (not internet, windows) explorer and you see where the company is trying to drive things. Windows 10 is transforming from a Win 7 successor to an advertising platform that also steals all and every personal info about you, …so it can offer you better experience. Yeah, right.
This has been regurgigated
This has been regurgigated over and over by tech sites, but so far not a single one has pointed to anyone actually being hit with this, nor can they point to any OEM actually selling and shipping Kaby Lake systems with Windows 7/8/8.1…
In other words, if you’re running these on Kaby Lake, you’re on your own to begin with.
In addition, enterprise
In addition, enterprise customers that don’t want to move to 10 yet, can easily stick to Skylake without any losses.
And most of them would be running Windows 7 which, while still getting security updates, is out of mainstream support.
Any argument about 8.1 still being in mainstream support is pointless as these customers are not likely using 8.1 to begin with.
I myself was anti Windows 10 until very recently.
RTM and SP1 (1511 Update) were useless imo.
SP2 (1607, AU) with a few months of patches and it’s actually quite usable.
SP3 (1703, CU) is right around the corner.
It’s time to move on.
Enterprises still on Windows 7 need to start moving now, so they don’t get stuck with an OS that’s not getting security updates in 3 years.
They should have learned their lesson with Windows XP already.
“Enterprises still on Windows
“Enterprises still on Windows 7 need to start moving now, so they don’t get stuck with an OS that’s not getting security updates in 3 years.”
My A$$ they will, M$ will lose billions if it pisses any Enterprise customers off, and there are still enterprise customers spinning up virtual machine instances with windows XP safely inside that VM environment and safely secured from the outside internet for some only inside the enterprise’s internal interweb usage only!
You need to go back to your original occupation of shoveling manure in the barn, if you think any large Enterprise will take any M$ horse hockey! That’s some very Daft reasoning on your part!
Enterprises also make use of Linux as does most of the Internet infrastructure! That mission critical enterprise software developed and certified for windows 7, that cost the enterprise way more money than M$’s OS(Enterprise Lease Costs) to develop and maintain, will be properly amortized over many years before any enterprise will even think about spending any new money(Millions) to certify that same mission critical software to work with any M$ new and shiny OS! You can bank on that!
“In other words, if you’re
“In other words, if you’re running these on Kaby Lake, you’re on your own to begin with.”
On what planet did the company i bought my operating system from tell me that their promise to address security vulnerabilities for 10 years was dependent on the type of hardware in my system?
I don’t care what MS does. It
I don’t care what MS does. It doesn’t effect me. IMO MS has every right to not optimize Windows 7 and 8.1 for the latest processors.
Google only provides mainline support for their devices for 2 years from the date of release. They only promise to provide security updates for 3 years.

It is a bad move as there in
It is a bad move as there in no real compatibility issue. Sure they are free to not update the scheduler to be better aware of the CCX in the new AMD CPUs, but there is nothing stopping the OS from working with these CPUs, they just might not work as efficiently.
On the kaby lake side of things, nothing was changed at the instruction level. An application that is optimized to work with the cores in a 6700k CPU, will work fine on a 7700k.
This intentional crippling of the OS, is just done out of spite.
Furthermore the ads in the windows explorer, will further push users away. While those of us here, understand the value of privacy, the the vast majority of users, they care nothing for the privacy and spying of the OS, but they do care when faced with additional ads.
