My brain is having a meltdown
My brain is having a meltdown on what to ask, let alone something intelligent to say regarding this new Flagship GPU from Nvidia. So all I can bring to the table on this one, is I will have to wait and see what you have put together tomorrow to get a better understanding of the potential that is the 1080Ti.
Let me help you: Is the
Let me help you: Is the hardware capable of FP16 packed math?
That’s an easy one: No, same
That’s an easy one: No, same as the Titan X(p). Only the GP100 gets packed FP16.
Another one: Is 1080TI driver
Another one: Is 1080TI driver spyware?
What finally pushed you to
What finally pushed you to ditch the DVI port? Was it purely for cooling improvements?
Why 11GB?
-and-
Is there
Why 11GB?
-and-
Is there going to be a Pascal refresh or straight to Volta?
Thanks
Regards to Memory, why wasn’t
Regards to Memory, why wasn’t HBM2 not implemented on this card?
I agree, 11GB is an odd number. Is there a hidden downside to it?
Because the
Because the Server/HPC/workstation GPU accelerator SKUs with HBM2 can recieve a higher price markup in that market than HBM2 equipped consumer gaming/GPU SKUs can get in the consumer market. Money, in the form of higher profit margins from the PRO GPU SKUs, talks! The HBM2 production will follow the high market mark-ups until that market’s HBM2 needs are met. Ditto for AMD to a lesser extent with Vega only getting two HBM2 stacks and not 4 lake Fury did.
AMD has less demand currently for professional level HBM2 based PRO GPU parts but that will change with Zen/Naples CPU server SKUs paired The Vega based Radeon Pro WX/Radeon instinct Professional GPU offerings getting to market very soon.
Jen-Hsun said that they had
Jen-Hsun said that they had seen some games in 5K resolution getting close to 11GB.
Then why not 12GB instead?
1) Differentiate the product with Titan X
2) Cut cost where you can.
Why would there be a downside to it, the bus isn’t as wide, but the bandwith is still higher cuz of the increased speed.
This is ofcourse pure speculation, but it makes perfect sense.
The Titan X has 12 pipelines,
The Titan X has 12 pipelines, the 1080 ti has 11. 1 chip is removed, 1 GB of memory, 8 ROPs(96 vs 88), and 256k of L2 cache. The memory bus is 352(ti) vs 384(Titan X), but is clocked 10% higher on the ti.
I’m still hanging onto my old
I’m still hanging onto my old gtx580 SLI config, and though they have served me well, I feel that it’s about time to upgrade. For the gamer that doesn’t like to upgrade every generation, do you think that the wider memory bus and faster gddr5x ram offer enough value long term to justify the higher expense?
Also, any cool projects/features related to Volta that we should know about? C’mon, you can tell me!
Serious question – why the
Serious question – why the recent trend (by all brands) holding out independent reviews until release?
As a potential buyer, it’s extremely frustrating having a product out there for preorder with no independent reviews to back up any claims or show the potential of the card. If you have a solid product, what are you afraid of? If anything, solid reviews would make this fly off the shelves…
I have 980Ti’s at the moment and will most likely be purchasing this gpu but, I won’t purchase until I see some real world results.
They are afraid of any type
They are afraid of any type of negative press that would affect those precious launch sales numbers.
I second this, what’s with
I second this, what’s with the timed release reviews?
Simple: vendor contractual
Simple: vendor contractual agreements.
In order for us to receive hardware pre-release, we have to sign NDA and embargo contracts that stipulate what and when information can be released about the product. Sometimes we have lots of time between hardware arrival and embargo lift, and can really get to know the part in question. other times… not so much.
Pascal/TI refresh in the
Pascal/TI refresh in the Flagship GPU market from Nvidia and Polaris RX 500 refresh from AMD in the mainstream GPU market. Sounds about like refresh business as usual for both GPU makers mostly. While the AMD folks can also look forward VEGA for AMD’s late entry into to the flagship GPU generational update market. Let’s see what Vega brings to the testing table.
1) On a previous live stream,
1) On a previous live stream, Tom implied that teams at Nvidia were busy working on new
features around G-Sync that they would share eventually. Since then, no real news or innovations around G-Sync have been announced (save for the G-Sync HDR monitor that Asus demo’d at CES 2017). Is there any news to share on this front?
2) Will the new G-Sync HDR revision be required for monitors to support HDR, or will existing G-Sync monitors gain support?
In regards to SLI. The new
In regards to SLI. The new Quadro card looked to have two high bandwidth SLI bridges. Why?Will this ever come to GeForce? Is this a solution to mainstream CPUs lacking x16 / x16 pcie support?
Why no RGB GeForce logo
Why no RGB GeForce logo bro?

True that Nvidia bins chips for founders edition cards?
Is there a price premium for FE 1080 Ti’s? No mention of it during the event.
Nvidia said specifically that
Nvidia said specifically that they weren’t looking to have a price premium for Founders edition cards this time.
If you want good oc ti FE get
If you want good oc ti FE get nvidia branded aib partners especally evga bin best cards and gpu for higher tier cards. nvidia doesnt discriminate on FE also rumored from past 1080 is that Nvidia kept chips in the center of the wafer yielding best chips
Q for Tom; What can he tell
Q for Tom; What can he tell us about the power output for the HDMI ports, with VR there has been a lot of hit and miss with regards to extension cables, and one of the problems seems to be HDMI power output.
Just before Holiday 2016
Just before Holiday 2016 (December), we were intrigued by a curious line in a LinkedIn job-posting, which at the time confirmed that NVIDIA is working on the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, and more importantly, that existing users of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti would have a priority in a pre-order queue, or a “Step Up Offer.” A step-up offer is that in which GTX 980 Ti users would have the ability to trade-in their GTX 980 Ti cards for new GTX 1080 Ti cards, at a price significantly lower than buying a brand-new GTX 1080 Ti card. From the looks of it, there is no sign of such offer.

Q: The 1080 Ti will be a
Q: The 1080 Ti will be a brutal overkill on 1080p for most games and partners are actively pushing 60+ Hz gaming on 1080+ resolutions; especially when combined with OCing that translates to GPUs running at 100% loads and 100+% power all the time at which point even the improved standard blower cooler design tends to get (midly put) audible. Are we going to see water cooled “reference” flagship cards anytime soon?
well to play @ 1080p you dont
well to play @ 1080p you dont need a 1080ti even my 1070 can play every games at ultra preses even with hairworks on this include witcher/battlefield/forhonor ..etc
Agreed (read my first
Agreed (read my first sentence again). Buy yourself a 144Hz 1440p monitor like the Asus MG279Q, though, and you enter a very different world where 1070s or overclocked 980 Tis like mine often aren’t enough and GPUs “never sleep” (hence the question re. cooling).
is a new driver needed for
is a new driver needed for the GTX 1080 Ti so we will have to download a new driver if we are on Windows and the drivers will need to be updated for Linux with both the Nouveau and Nvidia drivers needing a update it may all need some support adding to the actual linux kernel as well
Can you talk about the
Can you talk about the differences in PCB between the Titan and Ti. I.e. there are a lot of unpopulated pads on the Titan’s PCB that have been populated on the Ti’s. Why?
On the VR front: Nvidia are
On the VR front: Nvidia are now on their second generation (Multi-Res Shading, then Lens Matched Shading) of trying to massage rectilinear rengdering to the non-rectilinear requirements of modern HMD optics. Are Nvidia looking to implement a fully non-rectilinear raster pipeline for future GPU architectures? Or do they expect real-time ray tracing (or a ray-casting hybrid) – inherently able to use arbitrary projections – to be a viable alternative to raster before then?

Price is an utter
Price is an utter disgrace.
Feel sorry for the Fools, and yes I call them fools who bought Titan X (P’s). Down 500 dollars overnight.
$699 vs $1200 is an utter
$699 vs $1200 is an utter disgrace. Huh? 1080ti is over 40% off and has equal or better performance than Titanx Pascal. Early adopters always pay the price.
$699 price point may squeeze AMD when they finally release Vega with HBM2. If they can’t match performance they will have to charge less. HBM2 is currently very expensive.
This is only $50 more than when 980ti launched. It is a good deal.
People who complain about video card prices probably have no problem plunking down $900 every two years for the newest cell phone.
A card like this might be relevant for 4-5 years so presents good value.
