NZXT has announced that their three popular AiO watercoolers, the Kraken X62, Kraken X52, and Kraken X61 will be compatible with Threadripper, arriving soon to retailers.
NZXT has been working with AMD and created an adapter for SocketTR4 to allow you to use their cooler in your new system. The retention clip will be supplied by AMD, in the package the new CPUs. This is a good thing, considering the unique new way in which you install Threadripper processors. If you haven't seen the video demonstrating the installation process you can see it below.
How is that going to work
How is that going to work when the ihs is bigger than the surface area of the cooler? Only going to be cooling about 70% of the chip.
… and one would guess a
… and one would guess a metal retention clip that would pass some of the heat into the loop. We need more info, no pictures were included in the PR.
Agreed, the webpage says that
Agreed, the webpage says that the cooler (heat spreader) is for AM4 – just because AMD supplies a proper Retention Clip doesn’t mean that a ’round peg fits a rectangular shape’.
Here’s the business end: https://sta3-nzxtcorporation.netdna-ssl.com/uploads/product_image/image/1107/pdp_8447813390dd486a.jpg – it’s probably large enough for a Ryzen CPU.
Other companies have an enormous rectangular heat spreader for the Threadripper (or Epyc).
I wouldn’t put that on a CPU it wasn’t designed for. It’s going to limit the overclock and make the Fans ramp up.
It would be utterly bizarre
It would be utterly bizarre of AMD and NZXT to recommend something which did not work at all. If they couldn't make it work you would have seen them announcing the all new Kraken X399 instead.
Get’em all bench’em all!
Get’em all bench’em all!
It doesn’t have to cover the
It doesn’t have to cover the entire heat spreader, but the chip like you said. From what I’ve read, the normal cold plates fit (gamers nexus I think) enough of the ihs to work properly.
I feel for anyone unfortunate
I feel for anyone unfortunate enough to use that stock cooler shown in the video nothing like the sound of a jet engine taking off from your case under load.
I actually want to buy x52,
I actually want to buy x52, and have been keeping an eye on it for a while. Today it disappeared from some of my wishlists and I saw that it was replaced by v2…
However I can’t find anywhere what is changed between V1 and V2… Is this it?
There are a lot of Krakheads
There are a lot of Krakheads out there, so maybe there will be some future SKUs with a big rectangular block that covers the entire Threadripper can. Maybe some watercoolers for those 1P Epyc workstation SKUs with 24 or 32 cores(with 4 active Zeppelin dies) that could use a big rectangular block to keep any single socket Epyc Workstation SKU used for graphics workstations operating at that maximum all core boost clock for those long rendering workloads.
That Epyc 7401P Workstation SKU has some relatively high all core boost clock speeds and even though it may not be fully overclockable it’s still going to need some better cooling to keep close to its maximum all core boost clock speed for some single socket workstation graphics/rendering workloads that run for long hours like 3D animation workloads generating super high resolution frame after frame renderings over long hours of runs.
