We were extremely impressed with the Micron 9100 Enterprise SSDs. They are still the fastest NAND flash SSDs we've tested to date, but they were built on planar NAND, and we know everyone is replacing their flat flash with more cost efficient 3D NAND. Same goes for the 9200:
Highlights for the new models are IMFT 3D NAND running in TLC mode and a new controller capable of PCIe 3.0 x8 (HHHL form factor only – U.2 is only a x4 interface). Here are the detailed specs:
Improvements for the x4 models are marginal upgrades over the 9100, but the x8 variants bump up the maximum performance to 900,000 IOPS and 5.5GB/s! These should be shipping by the end of the month, and we will review them as they come in.

**Hard drive price used is the average of the first three prices taken from www.froogle.com for new, open market products that are not OEM or refurbished, and are new in every way. Do you think that Micron is
Do you think that Micron is going to make that end of the year deadline for the introduction of their QuantX brand of 3D XPoint SKUs?
It looks like 3D XPoint may be more of a niche market with the flash makers adding more memory cache to their NAND/NVM products in order to better compete on that latency metric against 3D XPoint. It appears currently that there is not enough of an durability improvment in using the current generation of 3D XPoint for there to be enough justification to adopt the new XPoint IP over any current NAND/NVM based solutions. This is becaise the Flash NAND/NVM makers are adopting their various engineering solutions for better performance and better overall product life. It would be nice if they listed the size of the memory cache in that product table and it would be interesting to see the ram cache sizes utilized across the 3 endurance classes listed.
I’d like to Know more about what the major NAND/NVM makers’ individual solutions are for competing better against the first generation of 3D XPoint and how effective that can be if the second generation of XPoint can be improved upon enough to force the market balance to shift more in XPoint’s favor.
That “more cost efficient 3D NAND” is that more to do with product assembly cost of having to attatch less dies to an end product or are there other diffusion cost factors involved that may make 3D NAND more affordable. The Planar NAND process is very mature and the costs are fairly fixed now as far as not much new R&D investments needed for Planar production. I guess that 3D NAND has been in production long enough for that economy of scale to kick in to make the 3D NAND based products the more affordable solution to diffuse and assemble the final product.
