It has been a long time since lapping was a requirement to get the best cooling for your new processor, however it might be making a comeback. Threadripper is endowed with a larger heatsink than your average CPU and to help you accommodate that the chip contains an Asetek mounting bracket which is compatible with most AiO coolers. The bracket and size of the heatspreader do seem to exacerbate any curvature of the coldplate however, the Asetek AiO which [H]ard|OCP tested needed to be lapped for a proper mating.
Since they had some difficulty with AiO coolers, [H] decided to configure their own watercooler for Threadripper. They grabbed an old Koolance water block they had handy and with a bit of time and a $10 trip to a hardware store they ended up with a much better solution. Take peek at the process, especially if you happen to have parts lying around that you want to put back to use.
"What do you do when you don't have the proper parts that you need to water cool your new thread ripper? Make you own with trash you find around the house. Maybe even repurpose and old water block that is in your closet."

I’ll wait for either an EK
I’ll wait for either an EK block or take my chances with full coverage Noctua.
The result seem much worse
The result seem much worse then what other site have shown so far.
I wonder if Kyle didn’t over tighten or un-evenly tighten the retention of the cooler.
It look like it got a diagonal force. Very different from the very round contact of the other threadripper report.

Anyways, it seem for non overclock operation, this doesn’t matter.
But I’m sure some people will want to overclock and make temp and power skyrocket just to get that extra 10% peak benchmark result.
More on this. Seem that even
More on this. Seem that even using the default thermal pad (that only cover 50% of the die) AIO cooler let you fully overclock all 16core to 4ghz without throttling. (1.3625v)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWu2tcm4wL8
And from idle to torture test on all 16 core. 35c delta.
Seem that the 1950x will do just fine with stock solutions.
And again hardocp must be doing something really wrong to get this pattern.

G-Damn F-ing S p a m Filter blocking ligit sites! youll have to fix the proper front porton of that address, but you know how that looks with that S p a m filter out of wack!
GamersNexus is doing more
GamersNexus is doing more thermal compound spreading tests, with some limited Threadripper thermal benchmarking to test the effectiveness of the various thermal compound application methods tried. Maybe there will be some more full Threadripper Full IHS coverage water-block designs testing when those SKUs start becoming available. I’m guessing that some larger full coverage waterblock designs will be best for the TR’s large IHS. And that includes on Wet-Side of the water cooled full coverage waterblock’s internal block/fins(Enginnered larger to cover a larger area) to better transfer heat into the coolent.
Since the existing AIO, even
Since the existing AIO, even with the small pre applied thermal pad is enough to run all 16 core overclocked at 4ghz stress tested without throttling, anything more is like a waste of $.
Will know more in 48hours, but so far larger contact plate might be a niceness, not a must.
No Less heat less elemental
No Less heat less elemental migration and longer life for the part. So get thoes temps the lowest possible. Less Heat less leakage and maybe even higher overclocks and/or longer periods of sustained boost clocks. Those round designs will result in more heat soaking into the corners of TR’s IHS and its better to have full IHS coverage with as large a cold-plate wet site block/fins as posssible. I fear for the MCM’s integrity at the epoxy/glued down interface around that IHS’s lip and down the center line/long axis where that ridge in the IHS underside extends down to be epoxied to the MCM if any heat builds up there in the thick IHS spots and around the IHS’s edges.
Go look at the TR delidding videos and see how much metal is in that TR IHS. Full coverage waterblocks only for me, the full size of TR’s IHS, and total coverage for longer life. Heat can degrade more than just processor dies, it cane degrade the on MCM Caps and the MCM materal itself. Overkill is better than underkill and those expensive parts done in by thermal stresses/thermally induced elemential migration of the processor’s elements and package elements.
Maybe they can also utilize some IR cameras to look at the TR IHS edges not covered by the round cooler’s cold plate, but I’ll go with what covers the whole IHS.

MORE Large rectangles incoming! no views of the inisides/wet side of the coldplate’s block/fins, but this cooler is rated: “LIQTECH TR4 liquid coolers can deliver extremely high TDP of 500W+” according to the ad copy posted by TechPowerUP. Well that’s funny that techpowerup ceated hyper-link goes nowhere so do not use it, man the posting of legit links is problematic at PCPer with that spam filter’s crazy ways! Anyways that cooler needs to be reviewed fo sure!
I don’t know about just
I don’t know about just throwing something together to cool a brand new obviously heat producing behemoth that costs what $750 and up. Just wait for a proper kit to be made for it or wait for the i9 series to launch. Sorry couldn’t resist twisting AMD”s marketing line for the last half a decade or so.
