In their testing of the new PC port of Destiny 2, The Guru of 3D made some interesting discoveries. The first is that at 1080p, the game's performance can be somewhat limited by your CPU, but not at 1440p or higher resolutions. The second finding is the impressive showing of AMD's Vega 64 and 56 at 1440p and 4K, which both outperform the GTX 1080. It may be that NVIDIA will release an optimized driver and repeat the improvements seen in Forza 7 but for now AMD is in the lead.

The GTX1080Ti is the best
The GTX1080Ti is the best card for this game for high resolution, so why did you fail to mention it?
It’s not about RELATIVE performance as your title suggests the best card is a VEGA card for high resolution.
RX Vega 56 outperforms the
RX Vega 56 outperforms the 1080 and is cheaper.
In terms of bang for buck, for Destiny 2 – if you can find it, Vega is where it is at.
Very few people actually buy 1080 Ti due to the price. However the 1070-1080 / Vega 56 price point is the meat of the market.
No, it’s not. It’s not even
No, it’s not. It’s not even close. 1080 destory Vega 56. Disgusting AMD fanboy.

Compared towards earlier beta
Compared towards earlier beta results the Vega cards advanced tremendously, there must have been some serious share of shader optimizations going on. This also goes for the RX 570 and 580, but weirdly enough not the 470 and 480?! I ran the Rx 480 three times and even reinstalled the driver to rule out a weird error on our side – but stil got the same odd results. The optimizations seems to have been applied only to the RX 500 and Vega series (for now). Regardless the optimizations work and show incredible performance / frame rates. Vega shows amazing numbers in this predominantly Nvidia title. It is not Vega-specific and very much driver-specific. RX580 is the exact same chip as RX480 and very different from Vega. Yet, RX580 also got the performance boost and RX480 did not.
It will be interesting to find out what the change in new drivers was. I am willing to bet that Nvidia will not let this go.
Apparently improved
Apparently improved performance at depth of field. There was a massive performance tank with earlier drivers on AMD. That has now been reduced or resolved.
Nvidia didn’t hit that performance problem – thus the gain that AMD got from drivers isn’t really there for Nvidia to fix.
Gamersnexus did more tests
Gamersnexus did more tests and the conclusion was exactly that – the depth of field is the most likely culprit:

Looking at scaling in PCGH
Looking at scaling in PCGH tests, Nvidia cards have exactly the same problem with performance halving when going from 1080p to 1440p:

I am still willing to bet their next drivers will bring improvements to Nvidia performance similar to what AMD cards got now.

ain't nobody got time for that! Has to come while I am writing up the post or you just get a boring headline. Sometime they work, sometimes not so much.
