Slated for a holiday release, images have appeared online of PowerColor’s upcoming Radeon RX Vega 64 Red Devil. The new custom graphics card is a triple slot design with a massive triple 85mm fan cooler. The shrouded Vega-based graphics card features red LED lighting that can be turned off with a hardware switch on the card itself. The shroud hides a 2.5-slot tall aluminum fin stack with contact to the GPU and VRM areas.
PowerColor is using an almost-reference design with a PCB that is slightly taller than AMD’s reference board and with two DisplayPort and two HDMI video outputs. It is not clear what the power input situation is with the Red Devil card with TechPowerUp reporting a two 8-pin configuration, but the images don’t reveal that and other sites aren’t corroborating that. One thing suggesting PowerColor may be sticking with two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors like the reference design is that they have not done anything crazy with the other power delivery components. While PowerColor is using different chokes, they are sticking with the reference 12-phase design with IR6894 and IR6211 DirectFETs and IR3598 phase doublers. The card does have a triple BIOS switch, so there is likely at least one factory overclocked option to push past the reference Vega 64 speeds of 4096 cores at 1247 MHz base and 1546 MHz boost.
According to Videocardz, the PowerColor RX Vega 64 Red Devil is slated for release later this month with availability at various retailers in early December. Further, PowerColor is also working on a custom RX Vega 56 card though it sounds like that one may not make it in time for the holidays. With the launch imminent, at least we will not have to wait too long to see the full specifications of this card.

Vega 56 is so close to the Vega 64 in TMU resources and Vega 56 has the same number of ROPs(64) that it would have been better to get the Vega 56 version out there before XMAS and just try and get higher overclocks.
Vega 56 is actually very close to the GTX 1080 in resources except for clock speeds and Vega 56 still has more shader cores than the GTX 1080. So with higher clocks Vega 56 can probebly get close enough while still not using as much power as the Vega 64 which is relatively better than Vega 56 a little more for compute workloads than pure gaming under DX11 titles with DX12/Vulkan titles still not fully making use of the latest graphics API features or all od Vega’s new IP features.
Maybe after the next year passes and more DX12/Vulkan optimized titles begin making use of all that new Vega GPU micro-arch IP like primitive shaders and 16 bit math then Vega 64’s higher shader counts can come in handy and even for Vega 56 which is still heavy on the shaders compared to the GTX 1080. So more FineWine(TM) is in store for the Vega based variants.
Navi is going to be more about Modular GPU Dies, similar to the Zen/Zeppelin modular/scalable die designs, and only a slight tweaking of the Vega GPU micro-arch. So at least with Navi those modular dies can be quickly made into a whole range of GPU variants low to mainstream to flagship just by adding more Navi Modular dies to the Interposer package. Any New Vega 11 or other base die designs need to have a higher ratio of ROPs to Shaders to compete with Nvidia.
So the Vega 10 base die design will not be as good for gaming against the GTX 1080Ti(88 ROPs) compared to 64 ROPs for both the Vega 56/64 Vega 10 base die variants until the DX12/Vulkan titles needing that extra shader resources on Vega for gaming, ditto for primitive shaders, 16 bit FP, and other new Vega Micro-Arch features.
AMD really needs to create base GPU designs for gaming that are ROP heavy compared to the ROP to shader ratios on its nCUs on Vega 10 and Vega 10’s current TMU counts and texture fill rates are higher than Nvidia’s TMU counts/fill rates. So AMD needs a base GPU nCU/ROP counts that can see shader counts reduced more without taking any ROPs out of action along with the shaders. So maybe on any newer Vega 11/other new Vega Variants AMD can at least get some ROP heavy base die designs out there with the ability to reduce shader counts enough to get more discrete mobile offerings for laptops.

PC folks where so quick to tun their collective noses up at Apple’s overpriced and under performing Thin And Lights but when Intel forces the same thermally constrained crap laptop form factors on the entire NON APPLE OEM laptop market no one appears to be complaining.
So where the hell are the regular form factor laptops with the Ryzen 7 2700U and more Vega nCUs and shaders at 35+ Watts. I sure hope that some gaming laptop OEMs at least offer gaming laptop with AMD’s desktop APUs inside(In 2018) like one OEM offers laptops with ryzen 7 1700, 8 core, laptop options. So hopefully there can be some Raven Ridge Desktop APUs inside a gaming laptop bucause it looks like that Reven Ridge Ryzen 7 2700U Mobile variant will not be inside many laptops for the mainstream market.

Raven Ridge is a Primium APU
Raven Ridge is a Primium APU with Vega graphics that Intel can not match. So I’ll and many others will pay more for the graphics on that Ryzen 7 2700U APU. Intel’s graphics is so far behind that Intel is sourcing semi-custom Radeon/Polaris dies for that EMIB/MCM module for a little AMD to help poor Intel.
Tha Ryzen 7 2700U has more Vega nCUs and shader cores so that will make for some nice regular from factor laptops for folks that do not give a rat’s A$$ about battery life. I use laptops not PCs and I have not had to use the battery in a good long while what with most coffee houses having power provided, ditto for airplanes and trains.
Regular form factor laptops with better cooling solutions do not cost as much as those crappy Ultrabooks/Thin and lights ripoffs. And 35 watt laptops are still the best value and offer more performance than that Apple style anorexic crap laptop form factor 15 watt nonsence that Intel has pushed onto the entire non Apple OEM laptop market.
You are braindead if you think that most non Apple PC/Laptop users want that overpriced thin and light and underpowered tat! They want regular form factor laptops with not thermal throttling and that includes APUs with larger numbers of shader cores. Hopefully there will be some laptops with desktop APUs inside like there are laptops with Ryzen 7 1700s inside for more power.
