With the current mining insanity driving GPU prices high enough it makes more financial sense to buy a gaming laptop or boutique system than to purchase a GPU on its own. The alternative is to continue on with your current GPU, even if it is a bit long in the tooth. Phoronix recently tested a battery of AMD and NVIDIA cards, focusing on older or less powerful models to see what kind of gaming performance they are capable of. The switch to Linux makes sense as Microsoft is beginning to refuse to recognize older GPUs and blocking the installation of the older drivers they require. You will have to turn down your graphics settings to reach playable FPS but there are titles out there you can still enjoy at 1080p.
"A request came in this week to look at how low-end and older graphics cards are performing with current generation Linux games on OpenGL and Vulkan. With ten older/lower-end NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon graphics cards, here is a look at their performance with a variety of native Linux games atop Ubuntu using the latest Radeon and NVIDIA drivers."

You can’t mine bitcoins with
You can’t mine bitcoins with gpus, so please stop blaming bitcoin.
Bitcoin has become a
Bitcoin has become a universal name for cryptocurrency. Bitcoin started this mess. Bitcoin gets the blame.
Have you not seen a mining
Have you not seen a mining rig?
So you are suggesting I
So you are suggesting I should write the following instead of using a blanket term which is easily understandable as refering to GPU mining in general?
Low budget gaming until Aeon, Boolberry, Bytecoin, Darkcoin, Ducknote, Fantomcoin, Givecoin, Global Denomination, GroestlCoin, Hirocoin, JackpotCoin, Logicoin, MemoryCoin, Monero, QuazarCoin, YACoin, Etherium, Dogecoin …. and so on for all altcoins which can be mined on a GPU … go away?
Do you notice a possible issue there?
Just use the word altcoins.
Just use the word altcoins. Better than calling it Bitcoins. If people bothered to use better words to describe things, more people would understand those words in the first place.
Random unoffical office poll
Random unoffical office poll from the last 6 people that came in to ask me things … 2/3's had no idea what altcoin was, 100% knew bitcoin.
Effective communication with the audience often trumps punctiliousness. Those with knowledge of the topic will understand either, but a random reader may only know the commonly used slang.
You are perpetuating a
You are perpetuating a misunderstanding to the general public. I’d rather read a word I don’t know than read a sentence that’s wrong. First step to self correction is understand a belief is wrong, which never happens if people keep saying everything is Bitcoin.
*shrug*
You never change your mind anyways.
You’re an idiot.
You’re an idiot.
Not necessarily, making
Not necessarily, making assumptions about people you've never met doesn't make one an idiot.
The belief that titles are not something used to grab peoples attention and interest them in reading the post and linked article and are instead more important than the body of the post always amuses me.
This nitpicking about how to refer to bitcoin/altcoin/cryptocurrency is specifically focused on a single word in the title which does not appear in the post at all.
I have to say that the person currently criticising the rack mounting in the Plex post trumps this though.
This is why americans suck at
This is why americans suck at life, all you know is gaming while korea, and asia are investing in new technology(cryptocurrency) soon you’ll end up living at $2 a day and be poorer than africa, cuz you ppl so dumb and don’t understand why to or want to invest in tech. In Japan kids wanna do research and innovate, in america they wanna play games and turn america into a hellhole.
I am Canadian, you silly
I am Canadian, you silly judgemental person.
You could have easily avoided
You could have easily avoided this by putting a “Bitcoin*” somewhere athe beginning of the first paragraph, and then at the bottom of the blurb put a
* –
So that people can wonder why
So that people can wonder why an article about the performance of older/cheaper graphics cards has turned into a lesson on cryptocurrency? It's like this post has almost nothing to do with what you are focused on.
Or you could just say
Or you could just say cryptocurrency as that covers it all, not that it bothers me much as like most people who are familiar with cryptocurrency i know it’s not cost effective to mine Bitcoin anymore and people tend to use Bitcoin to mean all cryptocurrencies.
“So you are suggesting I
“So you are suggesting I should write the following instead of using a blanket term which is easily understandable as refering to GPU mining in general?”
Better to be correct and suffer some readers actually needing to learn something, than lying because it’s convenient for the lowest common denominator.
If you really are running a
If you really are running a A6-7400K as your cpu, you might want to upgrade that first before the gpu. The test results(from the article) show that even with low end cards the bottlenecking is pretty bad with that cpu.
“Microsoft is beginning to
“Microsoft is beginning to refuse to recognize older GPUs”
That’s because of windows 10 and the folks who enable M$ by Installing/Buying products with windows 10 installed. Folks using windows 7 are doing fine with keeping that and the Windows 10 Forcing from borking the gaming drivers on windows 7/8.1.
Linux and Vulkan will be there for folks after 2020 and WINE is also seeing improvments for running windows games on Linux. Hell even Windows 7 locked down safely inside a Linux OS based Hypervisor Xen/KVM will be used by many after 2020. What there needs to be is more work getting Vulkan Gaming/Gaming engines running under windows 7/8.1 and Linux.
AMD also needs to stop this nonsense with not supporting Windows 8.1 for drivers/software-middleware and such or gamers are really going to be without some options come 2020 and the great Windows lockdown under Windows 10.
The PC Gaming crash has come.
The PC Gaming crash has come. There has been no revolutionary improvements to PC in the last 10 years. With all the other issues surrounding PC as of late that continue putting more nails in a coffin that has been already laid to rest. This era is over.
The PC is to market is too
The PC is to market is too fixed with the ad revenues and review samples with strings attatched, and such. Also with Windows 10 becoming so closed an OS ecosystem and packed with spyware. I’d rather go over to Linux and that’s probaby the only space where someone’s PC hardware will actually belong to the owner and not as with M$ and windows where M$ has too much control!
I think that Valve is correct in still maintaining their Steam OS Linux distro as an insurence policy for beyond 2020. And the Free/Open Source PC market will be the one market that can remain as close to the original idea/ideals of the Personal Computer.
The PC market is no longer personal at all, it’s too closed outside of the Open Source Linux/FreeBSD/Other OS projects that are not proprietary.
You hear that Linux laptop OEMs start getting some Raven Ridge APU based laptop SKUs before 2020 gets here and I’ll be able to at lest move away from M$’s Closed OS ecosystem of forcing and loss of control with spyware baked into the OS.
Lol why all the different
Lol why all the different user names mr. M$
Because it pisses of all the
Because it pisses of all the daft peckerwoods like you, why else!
