A Detailed Look

The FSP Hydro PTM 650W power supply enclosure is painted satin black with light gray lettering and features a brushed aluminum trim piece around the fan opening. It comes with color coordinated labels for the side panels to suit your particular builds color scheme. The PSU has blue labels attached but you can choose to alternately apply red or green ones (adhesive backed).

The 650W unit measures 170mm (6.7”) deep. The back panel includes an On-Off switch, AC receptacle and large asymmetrical fan grill openings for good exhaust airflow.

The power supply uses a 135mm Protechnic Electric fan (MGA13512HF-A25) that incorporates a fluid dynamic bearing for quiet operation and long, reliable life. The fan is rated for up to 0.28A at 12 VDC. As we noted before, even though the box lists “0dB Zero Noise” as a feature, the Hydro PTM 650W PSU does not operate in fanless mode. The fan starts out spinning slow and quiet, and stays that way through 50% load, which I personally like to see.

The front panel includes nine connectors for attaching the modular cables, all nicely labeled and keyed so you don’t accidentally plug the wrong cable into a particular connector.

The Hydro PTM 650W power supply comes with a good assortment of eight fully modular cables for easy installation and clean builds. All of the cables are the flat ribbon-style.

Under the Hood

Here are a few pictures showing the layout and components inside the latest Hydro PTM 650W power supply and of course FSP Group Inc. is the OEM. The layout, soldering and build quality all appear to be very good.

FSP is using a modern, high-performance LLC half bridge, Synchronous Rectification power conversion topology along with DC-to-DC voltage regulators located on a daughter card to help provide tight voltage regulation and high efficiency.

All of the Japanese made electrolytic capacitors are rated for 105°C operation and the two primary bulk caps are made by Nichicon and rated for 270 uF, 450V, and 105°C. The power supply also incorporates numerous solid polymer caps.
