Final Thoughts

I frequently say that we need more high performing SSDs at more reasonable prices, and I am frequently disappointed. Not so with these new Western Digital WD Black NVMe and the SanDisk Extreme PRO M.2 NVMe 3D SSDs! These new offerings bring with them a new 'Spectrum' controller architecture employing triple cores working in tandem with purpose-built ASIC data sequencers which help to offload much of the workload and speed things up overall – and boy did they! nCache 3.0 SLC caching technology helped these parts turn in burst write speeds blowing every other SSD out of the water (even beating Intel Optane!), and while the read performance was not chart-topping, it remained highly competitive. Wrap all of this up with solid endurance and a good price (so long as it holds) and you end up with a new default enthusiast SSD recommendation from this storage editor!

WD/SanDisk worked hard on this product and it clearly shows. Worthy of our highest award as they are selling it at a very competitive price given its outstanding performance.
