Stop us if you've heard this one before; Microsoft's optional Windows update just became mandatory. In the exact same pattern as the Fall Creators Update, the supposedly optional Spring Update is finding its way onto those who have chosen the delayed upgrade path and is installing whether you like it or not. On the consumer side this ranges from an annoyance to a machine breaking bug for owners of some SSDs that weren't lucky enough to receive patches in the correct order. From a business side it is far more than that, as once again Microsoft have proven that SMBs and Enterprise simply can't count on the deferred updates path as safe as Windows 10 has forcibly installed both these updates on machines set to not receive it.
Will Microsoft offer insight into how this bug continues to happen, or will The Inquirer's prediction hold true and we will hear nothing but silence and the occasional POST beep codes?
"MICROSOFT APPEARS to be making up its own rules regarding Windows updates once again as users report that they are being forced to download Windows 10 version 1803 (Spring Update) – even if they had set the option to defer the update."

If you’re surprised by this
If you’re surprised by this then you probably believe that MS will not exploit W10 for every penny they think they can get at the expense of everyone using it. It’s going to be slow but it’s coming. (more)Ads, adding features that have been removed as paid DLC, paid removal of ads, trial software you didn’t want, anything they think they can get away with without actually having people move off W10.
I had to go find Barnacles
I had to go find Barnacles video about disabling software downloads in the registry. I had over 2 gigs of downloaded crap like Candy Crush and other stuff that I didn’t put there and wasn’t there until 2 days after I installed Win 10. This doesn’t stop things like Windows Updates but its proof that MS will cram stuff on your box (and user your data, if you have a data limit….without your consent).
Just more of the Lord of
Just more of the Lord of Redmond’s forcing on all the UWP(Universal Windows Peasants)! You will bend over and receive your spring reaming! What’s that another load of crapware pushed down into those nether regions where the Sun’s rays never reach!
This is why I have completely
This is why I have completely disabled Windows update on my main rig and my wife’s rig at home both system’s have stopped at the Fall Creators update and if I choose to install the spring update then it will happen but I am going to wait and see what happens with it before plunging into potential problems with either of the systems and then there will be also the built in patches for the Spectre & melt down that suck performance from older CPU’s like Sandy & IVY bridge to contend with.
My feelings are if MS wants to make it so we no longer have the option for upgrades then maybe they can pay me rent for having their OS on my system. I paid for the computer and paid for the OS which would make you assume that you at least own the right to make your own choices when it comes to stuff like this.
Yes I know you do not own the OS you just license it but with that said it does not give MS the right to tell us how we run our system’s. This reminds me of how Apple treats their customers and have been doing so for many years. That is the whole reason I have never bought into the Apple Eco system & now we have MS trying to pull the same thing. I guess we better hope Linux takes off in as bigger way in the near future.
I would say that if they can get Linux more main stream and be able to run more software that every one uses as well as get more companies onboard this will be the next logical step for most people to move towards.
I’ve taken 4 machines off
I’ve taken 4 machines off line due to MS forcing any update they choose. I kept one machine with the current 1803. I have audio but not able to use stereo mix from the speaker output to the recording software. My video driver for my capture card has been rendered useless ever since 1803. I don’t care if it takes forever to get simple problems like this corrected. I’ll live with the the 1709 release until I learn corrections have taken place. Living in a stand-alone state is not awful because there are alternatives and it sure beats rolling multiple machines back to a previously known working version.
