A couple of weeks ago, the Samsung 970 EVO and PRO launched, but they were not available for purchase until today.
It appears Samsung were paying attention to the many reviews pointing out that the price premium was getting harder to justify in the face of competing drives closing in on performance because along with purchase availability came some nice price cuts:
Old pricing:
- 970 PRO
- 512GB – $330 ($0.64/GB)
- 1TB – $630 ($0.62/GB)
- 970 EVO
- 250GB – $120 ($0.48/GB)
- 500GB – $230 ($0.46/GB)
- 1TB – $450 ($0.45/GB)
- 2TB – $850 ($0.43/GB)
New pricing (MSRP):
- 970 PRO
- 512GB – $250 ($0.49/GB)
- 1TB – $500 ($0.49/GB)
- 970 EVO
These are not sale prices – these are the revised suggested retail prices (MSRP) from Samsung! It looks like Newegg and Amazon are now populating their listings with 970 SSDs at the revised pricing.
Amazing coincidence to happen
Amazing coincidence to happen at the same time as price fixing investigations….
These price cuts kills some
These price cuts kills some SSDs. The WD Black 3D I think was already failing compared to Evo because it’s about writes instead of reads. Now it’s costing more than the 970 Evo. The 760p just matches the Evo in 1tb pricing, but the Evo is far faster.
And on the Pro side the price cuts are even steeper.
The price cuts really did
The price cuts really did need to be steeper on the PRO side. >$0.60/GB was just too much to ask for that part (in this current market).
if you don’t have the money
if you don’t have the money and you don’t have to have the best and fastest, try this one:

$.15/gig and it has a 400TB endurance and it is micron
mine is new, so i can’t say much personally, but it is getting good reviews
We’re getting ever closer to
We’re getting ever closer to Ryan’s 10 cent/GB SSD – 2018 could be the year!
Hay Allyn are the Samsung
Hay Allyn are the Samsung drivers more elegant than the Intel 750 ones. I have 2 750 AIC cards with both of them the instruction’s or should I say small bit of paper in the box that had the web address to get the drivers from was out of date as they moved the page.
Then when I found them manually and installed the toolkit I found it didn’t install the driver its just the toolkit so I had to install that separately.
Also to keep the toolkit up to date if you click check for updates it just takes you to the download page you have to manually look to see if you have an older toolkit and then download and install manually.
And on at least 2 updates intel changed the download address again as it just took you to a dead page.
And with the driver there isn’t even a check for updates button every now and then you have to go to the drivers page and look for yourself manually and then download the EXE manually and install.
Cheers
