AMD is returning the Athlon name to active service with the arrival of the Athlon 200GE, combining their current Zen core with three Radeon Vega 3 GCUs and a GPU core of 1GHz. The dual core, multithreaded processor will run at 3.2GHz with a TDP of 35W, which should give you an idea of where you will find this new chip.
Along with the new Athlon comes four new Pro chips, the AMD Athlon PRO 200GE, Ryzen 7 PRO 2700X, Ryzen 7 PRO 2700 and Ryzen 5 PRO 2600. These will be more traditional desktop processors with enterprise level features to ensure the security of your systems as well as offering flexibility; with a cost somewhat lower than the competitions.
very curious to see athlon
very curious to see athlon performance and price. Always on the lookout for good basic HTPC cpus.
The Athlon 200GE is way
The Athlon 200GE is way overpriced! (45 USD)
Half the core/thread count and less than 300 MHz @stock compared to the 2200G but more than half the price.
IMHO it shouldn’t be priced over 45 USD for a binned Raven Ridge.

Since when has processor
Since when has processor prices scaled linearly at the low (or high end) with performance? Just like hard drives, GPU’s, etc, as you get cheaper and cheaper the material costs start becoming a larger and larger percentage of total cost.
Something that enthusiasts will never understand, but for some people $50 is a lot. It doesn’t matter if it gets you 50% more performance if you can’t afford to spend $50 more, or would get better bang for buck investing that $50 into the GPU or storage.
I’m wondering why the
I’m wondering why the consumer should pay an arm and a leg for AMD’s garbages? Actually prices aren’t related to performance or material cost but demand.
IMHO the Athlon 200GE is a gift to AMD not the consumer.
Price scales with demand to a
Price scales with demand to a point, because below a certain price it isn’t profitable to produce something. AMD obviously thinks it can sell these at $55 and produce some profit, if the market sees differently then no one will buy it and AMD will discontinue the processor.
And if $55 is an arm and a leg, then which other processor can you buy for $55 that makes this ‘garbage’? Or do you hate all processors in this price segment?
Actually it IS an arm and a
Actually it IS an arm and a leg since this 2 cores chip is a binned Raven Ridge evaluated to zero before the its commercialization.
I prefer to keep the money in my pocket to buy a more competitive offer later even at a higher price tag.
The matter isn’t the price segment but the economic efficiency for the consumer.
Not sure I understand. Say I
Not sure I understand. Say I want to buy a low power (<45watts) cheap (<$90) HTPC cpu. If the performance is good enough, I dont need more cores or higher frequency. Is there some obvious option better than everything else?
For a low power/cost HTPC,
For a low power/cost HTPC, the Celeron G3930T should also be good enough and cheaper ($42) than the Athlon 200GE with hardware acceleration (cf. integrated graphic circuit).
I’ve personally never been
I’ve personally never been able to find intels T processors for sale boxed. I get the feeling they only sell them to companies to put into all-in-ones and the like. For example, I’m seeing the 3930t you mentioned for sale at $55 and only tray (no box/heatsink).
I’ve also historically appreciated AMD integrated graphics more than intels (for old games or LOL/DOTA etc).

Athlon PRO 200GE say hello to
Athlon PRO 200GE say hello to your new thin client life! Remember the Pro APU SKUs get longer warranties and have those extra manageability feature enabled for business usage. It looks like GF’s 14(Licensed From Samsung) and GF’s 12nm processes will still be used for a good while under that AMD Pro Branding, ditto for the first generation Zen/Epyc production even after Zen 2 arrives. 5+ years of support/SKU availability is the standard for most server SKUs.
Looks like the consumer Athlon 200GE is not unlocked also so there goes the fun of it all! And who designed that web page for AMD they need to be sent packing as not everyone has a triple wide monitor setup.
This would look well on a low
This would look well on a low cost laptop.
hmmm. tempting, i already
hmmm. tempting, i already upgraded my main pc from a ryzen 5 1600 to a ryzen 7 1700. upgrade kids pc from a athlon x4 845 to a intel i5 8400. so i cant see myself needed this new athlon dual core for anything. however i love the 2 core 4 threads idea with AMD.
It stings in my chest to see
It stings in my chest to see that the Athlon brand have been designated to a bargain brand. The Athlon (Argon) was my first high performance CPU. I bought it together with the Creative Labs 3D Blaster Annihilator Pro GeForce DDR. Good times 🙂
perfect time to upgrade our
perfect time to upgrade our dota 2 mmr boosting machines. AMD for the win. never really liked Intel.
