As Jeremy briefly noted in his news roundup, yesterday, there was some concern that the latest Windows 10 update could be causing some users to lose files. These concerns have not been confirmed by Microsoft. They have started to investigate it, however.
Until they know that there is an issue (and, if so, have developed a fix for it) they are suspending the rollout of the Windows 10 version 1809 update. They are also recommending the users who have acquired the installation media (because ISOs can be used to in-place upgrade a machine) do not install it until the patch exists.
At this point, there seems to be enough noise to suggest that there is a problem somewhere. Some speculation, as Jeremy mentioned, is that the drive clean-up (“Storage Sense”) process runs if the install process doesn’t have enough free space, versus simply failing the install. Storage Sense has been in Windows 10 for a while now, but the latest update adds the ability to remove local files if they are backed up in the cloud. Knowing the types of mistakes that programmers tend to make, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Storage Sense didn’t have local files flagged properly, because the Windows 10 update hasn’t installed yet to state whether they were correctly migrated to OneDrive or not, so it got rid of them thinking that they were online.
This is complete speculation on my part, though!
You can then go into how sketchy it is to have files automatically removed from a device’s storage given that online storage services do occasionally lose files. The feature can be turned off in the Settings app, however, under the System -> Storage category. I don’t know if that will fix the upgrade problem, however.
For now, stick on the April 2018 update until Microsoft says anything. Personally, I'll install the new version on my new PC anyway (because it will have empty drives and it looks like this bug only affects the update process) but that's a bit of a risk.
“Until they know that there
“Until they know that there is an issue (and, if so, have developed a fix for it) they are suspending the rollout of the Windows 10 version 1809 update”
Well it damn well has to be an issue if some folks are getting their data deleted! So it’s more of the folks in Redmond(Not Really in Redmond because they Outsourced their QA/QC some time ago) finding and fixing what M$’s Outsourced “QA/QC” could not!
Scott, nothing beats a Real Backup to an external Hard Drive that’s not stored in the cloud just in case, and should always be the case where M$ is concerned”.
System Image Backup still works in windows 10, or even use some third party backup to do a complete System Image Backup to an external Hard Drive of all the System Files, Application files, and Your Data onto an Image that can be restored even in safe mode, and even if Save Mode has problems working if you take the time to make a one time Windows recovery/repair disk for that machine onto CD/DVD(Under the Windows System Image Backup option or directly make a Windows recovery/repair disk option).
So do a system image backup and at the end of that System Image Backup process you will be asked to make a system recovery CD/DVD(if you have a CD/DVD drive) and that’s only needed to be done one time for the specific Windows OS(7, 8.1, 10) and kept handy in case your system safe mode has issues with starting the reimage from backup system image that you have made to an external hard drive. Then you can keep your system image backup at hand on that external hard drive to reimage your entire hard drive if somthing goes wrong. Folks without CD/DVD drives(for the recovery CD/DVD) will have to look at other options I guess on newer laptops that do not come with CD/DVD drives.
You can do System Image backups once a month right before Windows Update time to an external hard drive and Keep that Handy as well as the recovery CD/DVD that you made after your fist System Image Backup and that CD/DVD only needs to be made one time on your system with any future System Image Backuups NOT needing a recovery CD/DVD made evey time(unless you have installed a new OS version). The Recovery/System repiar disk CD/DVD is only needed if your computer’s safe mode is having issues.
You can also do a more limited user libraries files backup to a hard drive, SD, whatever external storage also(but that does not include full System Image) and back up only your user files that are stored in My Pitcures, My Documents, Libraries. If you store in other places on you C drive then you better make sure to copy those over yourself to any external media backup device.
There’s M$’s Cloud(Not totally Safe) and Your Machine’s system drive(Definitely not Safe) or an external hard drive with a system Image Backup that’s relatively more safe than any M$ cloud or System drive. Store that external drive in a fire safe if you value your data, or some safe storage location that only you have physical access to.
Window 10! Oh the pain the pain the terrible pain, Will Robinson! The Terrible Pain of being an Eternal BETA tester for the folks in Redmond!
P.S. You can also just create a Recovery Drive or System Recovery/Repair Disc in Windows directly via that option in windows 8(8.1), 10(If M$ has not removed that option) but always do a system image backup to be safe(monthly or more often if you have installed more applications):

Personally, I use a mix of cloud and local drives. Three copies (original plus two backups, one of which is local and the other one off-site) if possible.

Kidding?
At work I sleep my PC after going home and in the morning it is up an running with updates installed. Regularly while working it installs updates and I forget to immediately react and disable reboot. Next morning…
Does anyone makes system image of his phone or (Android) tablet?
Does it means now every Win10 user must follow MS tweeter, redid, arstec, pcper… before installing an update?
Not to mention 90% Win7/8 user ware FORCED to update.
Only solution is MS to pay its users! They only understand lack of money!

For starters, your headline
For starters, your headline says a) don’t install the update, and b) don’t wait (to install the update). It’s not as bad as “You can’t put too much water in a nuclear reactor,” but still… “Hold Off on Installing the Update” isn’t as awkward.

That's a quote (hence the colon) from the Microsoft source (with an "it" replaced with "an update" for clarity, and the end was chopped off to fit a headline).

Satan Nadella deleted my
Satan Nadella deleted my files. What should i do now? How should i prevent him hacking my pc again? Anyone got advice?
If Nadella is already a Satan
If Nadella is already a Satan to you, i think your only choice is to become an Amish, eschew modern technology and lament about the evil in this world for the rest of your days…
Or see the light and get some
Or see the light and get some Linux Distro and be free of that Satan Nadella and his minions!
Linux and no forcing from the Dark Lords of Redmond that serve only Satan Nadella and his evil dark cloud of odoriferous miasma.
Bill me Never, Satan Nadella, from ye vile invoice of total damnation! For the Prophet Gaben has been shown the light of the true Calling of Linux!
Hmm, gamers are still doing
Hmm, gamers are still doing the Gabe Newell idolizing and worshipping thing? Of course they do, of course… 😉
It’s more of a survival thing
It’s more of a survival thing for Prophet Gaben in the form of lost profits sort of things for Valve once Windows 7/8.1 goes EOL and M$ begins to lock things down to its closed windows 10/UWP ecosystem.
So that Linux support is there for as a safety for Valve to be able to at least offer some from of Linux Gaming options and Valve not giving most of its earnings to the Dark Lords of Redmond.
I’m sure at some point in time that Valve will be forced to release some Gaming Hardware options of its own if that’s what it takes to keep Valve in business. Valve better be considering some from of AMD CPU/GPU solution or even a semi-custom AMD gaming oriented APU and GDDR6 offering for a new generation Steam Box offering. That Semi-custom Chinese APU comes to mind and maybe somthing similar or just make use of some off the shelf AMD hardware and beef that up.
M$ is now offering Cloud Gaming so Valve may have to consider some sort of Hardware Steam Machine and Cloud gaming option also, in addition to other options that can run under linux. Cloud gaming will be more Linux based anyways so that’s an Option for Valve and the Prophet Gaben to keep his profits from the Dark Lords of Redmond’s undead hands.
I haven’t encountered this
I haven’t encountered this problem. been working great for me. But really MS you guys need to get your game up here.
The Storage Sense theory
The Storage Sense theory isn’t quite devious enough. The deleted files were previously backed up to the cloud and thus when space ran low, deleted as intended. The change triggered a quick cloud sync, which noticed the files had been deleted on purpose and immediately purged them from all online storage as well. Perfect synchronization is maintained.
Windows is operating exactly as designed. The user is at fault for having inadequate resources to run the software. Tag: wontfix
