Compared to the other major flash manufacturers YMTC is quite new to the game, a mere two years in the business. They've currently only ever produced 32-layer NAND and are working on their 64-layer process, which places them far behind the competition. In a daring plan to try to carve a space for themselves in the market, they will not be developing 96-layer NAND at all but will try to skip ahead to 128-layer instead. It is a bold move, perhaps even a make or break one for the new manufacturer but that is the kind of thing you need to look at when competing with Intel, Samsung and the other major players.
"China's Yangtze Memory Technology (YMTC) aims to leapfrog 96-layer NAND and move straight to the production of 128-layer flash in 2020, according to a report."
