Compared to the other major flash manufacturers YMTC is quite new to the game, a mere two years in the business. They've currently only ever produced 32-layer NAND and are working on their 64-layer process, which places them far behind the competition. In a daring plan to try to carve a space for themselves in the market, they will not be developing 96-layer NAND at all but will try to skip ahead to 128-layer instead. It is a bold move, perhaps even a make or break one for the new manufacturer but that is the kind of thing you need to look at when competing with Intel, Samsung and the other major players.

"China's Yangtze Memory Technology (YMTC) aims to leapfrog 96-layer NAND and move straight to the production of 128-layer flash in 2020, according to a report."

The China’s propaganda tries
The China’s propaganda tries to lure the world pretending they can catch up US technology like Russia during the cold war, but actually they already lost the race since the chinese oligarchy doesn’t spend their money in educating more than 500 millions peons…
Woo Hoo 128 layers and the
Woo Hoo 128 layers and the Chinese will make these things cheap cheap cheap!
Only 500 million Peons that’s less than 50% peons and there is no country with that low of a peon percantage. You are the peon for not getting the math correct. And the Chinese will catch up on technology they produce 700,000+ trained/educated engineers per year. And look at China’s and India’s STEM greduation rates(1):
” China had 4.7 million recent STEM graduates in 2016. India, another academic powerhouse, had 2.6 million new STEM graduates last year while the U.S. had 568,000.”(1)
The US is third on that list, probably mostly foreign born students that stay in the US and not the folks that are born here! It was sure that way with the mostly foreign born students at UC berkeley with most of its STEM students even back in the 1980’s.

I’m afraid you’re conflating
I’m afraid you’re conflating quantity with quality of education… which is why chinese even in STEM are so poor!
Really just look at all the
Really just look at all the Chinese grad students in US universities grad Students from India also. So even in American universities that Grad and Postgraduate population in mostly International students.
“At the undergraduate level, 80 percent are United States residents. At the graduate level, the number is reversed: About 80 percent hail from India, China, Korea, Turkey and other foreign countries.” (1)
.
.
.
“The dearth of Americans is even more pronounced in hot STEM fields like computer science, which serve as talent pipelines for the likes of Google, Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft: About 64 percent of doctoral candidates and almost 68 percent in master’s programs last year were international students, according to an annual survey of American and Canadian universities by the Computing Research Association.” (1)

That only proves the chinese
That only proves the chinese and indian education systems suck… and only the upper classes from theses countries are able to be milked by overpriced fees from US universities.
No the smartest come from
No the smartest come from overseas to the US as it has been since before WW2 and that’s why the Universities are so good in America! The professors are mostly sourced from US Universities from International persons(their Grad Students once they finish their PHDs).
The US has most of the top Universities but I’ll bet most of the professors where not born in the US. That New York Times article says it all. And the Majority of Peofessors come from the Top Grad sutdents and the Top Grad students have mostly been international students for decades in the US. China has some top universities also along with India and the EU. Canada also has plenty of top universities.
And the undergradiate and high school education systems in some countries are much more difficult to pass than in the US. Just look at some of the STEM rankings world wide and student test scores.
Look at all that H1B Visa Action and US corporations are endowing Chairs at US universities that are staffed with Best and Brightest Professors sourced from the world wide market of PHDs.
