NVIDIA just wrapped up its CES keynote, and in addition to the expected unveiling of the RTX 2060, the company announced new mobile GeForce RTX options. More than 40 upcoming laptops, including 17 sporting NVIDIA’s Max-Q design, will offer RTX 2080, RTX 2070, and RTX 2060 graphics options.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang likened GeForce RTX-powered laptops to a gaming console platform, pointing out multiple times performance comparisons to traditional game consoles like the PlayStation 4.
Laptops are the fastest growing gaming platform — and just getting started. The world’s top OEMs are using Turing to bring next-generation console performance to thin, sleek laptops that gamers can take anywhere. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide — an entire generation — are growing up gaming. I can’t wait for them to experience this new wave of laptops.
New GeForce RTX laptops will continue to support features like WhisperMode, which paces frame rates for AC-connected laptops to reduce heat and therefore fan noise, NVIDIA Battery Boost, which uses GeForce Experience to optimize performance for longer battery life, and of course G-SYNC.
Beyond gaming, NVIDIA is touting the benefits of the RTX platform for content creators, such as real-time video encoding for live streamers, faster rendering for video editors, and accurate interactive lighting, reflections, and shadows for animators.
Laptops sporting GeForce RTX cards will be available starting January 29th from NVIDIA partners including Acer, Alienware, ASUS, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer, and Samsung. Pricing, detailed configuration options, and exact availability will vary and is not yet available for all manufacturers.

Really unless Blender 3D gets CUDA 10 support that RTX animation lighting effects is going to have to wait for the professional Graphics packages which usually get the GPU hardware/driver support for the latest Professional GPU technology the fastest. Nvidia is probably still busy getting its Quadro/RTX Professional Graphics Driver RTX ducks in order because most of the professional Games/Animation Houses will be using Quadro GPU SKUs and those Pro graphics packages cost thousands.
On the more affordable side is Blender 3D and Krita/Gimp as well as the other open source Video editing packages that will probably not see full Consumer RTX/Turing support for a good while. Any real intensive Animation Rendering with very high ray tracing sample settings can already be done on older generation Pascal/Older and Vega/Older GCN(Back to GCN 1.1 for Blender’s OpenCL Cycles renderer) GPU generations that cost considerably less than any Current RTX/Turing consumer SKUs.
Blender 3D will happily spread non real time Ray Tracing Animation rendering workloads across 4 or more Vega GPUs, ditto for Pascal/older GPUs also. It’s not like non real time ray tracing needs to be making any 33.33ms or 16.67/Lower frame time limitations. Animation rendering can take hours per frame if the scene detail and ray tracing sample rates are set high enough. So those folks usually go the render farm method anyways and it’s much lower cost just to get a Zen Epyc/Naples workstation and cram that with Vega 64s/Pascals or just rent some cloud CPU/GPU instances and do things that way.
Animation rendering GPUs usually do not need PCIe 3.0 x16/x16-electrical levels of bandwidth and can use more PCIe x16/x8-electrical slots for more GPUs working from a single motherboard.
So unless Nvidia can sale any home rendering users on comsumer RTX/Turing’s ability to speed up the animation rendering process to such a degree that it makes the extra cost of Consumer RTX/Turing worth the extra investment home animators will stick with what’s more affordable.
Consumer RTX/Turng is costing more in some cases than AMD’s Radeon Pro WX SKUs so any home business based independent Graphics/Amimation Professionals will probably look at AMD’s Radeon Pro WX professonal offerings first if they are costing less than RTX/Turing consumer SKUs that do not offer any professional graphics GPU/Drivers that are Vetted/Certified to work with the Pro Graphics software packages and Pro GPU SKUs.
Nvidia can try and market to content creaters all they want but with even Nvidia’s Consumer RTX/Turing SKUs costing more than some of AMD’s Radeon Pro WX offerings the content creators are going to look towards AMD’s Pro/WX offerings first. The Cloud rendering services Providors because they lease time will probably be looking at RTX/Quadro as the cloud services providors can recoupe the cost over a larger customer base and any RTX/Quadro Ray Tracing efficiencies can be properly amortizied quicker by the cloud rendering services providors.
AMD does market a dual Vega 56 Like(Shader core counts/Die) 2 GPU DIEs/Single PCIe card based Professional GPU SKU the Dual-Vega Radeon Pro V340. That SKU comes with a specilized ASIC based MxGPU hardware-based virtualized GPU solution for the Radeon Pro V340. So That’s competing against V100 currently as the Vega 20 based solutions are just now becoming available. I’d expect that AMD will Update its V340 Cloud Rendering/Visulation market line of GPUs with some newer Vega 20 based offerings also and at 7nm/TSMC AMD could probably fit 2 full Vega 20 Dies/4096 shader cores on a single PCIe card offering because of the power efficiency gained at 7nm.
Only gaming workloads are Frame Time Limited so RTX/RT cores makes more sense for gaming workloads on the Consumer RTX variants while any Professional Graphics rendering done for small scale projects can be more affordablely done using Pascal, or Vega based, GPUs with more than one GPU utilized for rendering. Any Professional Graphics Contractors on a deadline are not going to be using any consumer GPU variants because the consumer GPU variants are not ECC enabled. So only Quadro/Radeon Pro WX Pro cards are designed for workloads that can not afford any errors for any rendering results that have to be done on a strict deadline.
The Pro GPU hardware and Pro Graphics Drivers are heavily tested and vetted/certified on all of the major Professional Graphics software packages. So if you are a graphics house/contractor producing Trade Show Booth signage/graphics you can not afford for any artifacts to show up in any last last minute rendering edits when the work has to be finshed before the trade show date arrives. That’s level of QA/QC and ECC can only be achieved using Quadro or Radeon Pro GPUs/Professional Graphics Drivers that are Vetted/Certified for accuracy and fidelity.
It’s Your professional/business A$$ on the hook if you miss any deadlines due to any artifacts showing up in a large display graphic/image with no time remaining to correct the problem other than another 8-16 hours of render time and a deadline missed.
