Backblaze have been one of the larger remote backup providers for quite some time now, and running their 104,778 HDDs gives them a lot of insight into drive failures. They are kind enough to share their data with the public, to give a bit of insight into how many of their various drives have failed. The data does not represent the findings of a proper scientific study but the sample size is large enough to give an idea how WD, Toshiba, Seagate and Hitachi drives fare in the wild.
The Register is quite impressed with the overall durability of the drives, including the Toshiba 5TB drives, none of which have failed since the 45 of them were deployed in Q2 2016.
"Just 139 out of 10,000 12TB Seagate drives fail a year, and Western Digital's HGST brand has an even better rate of 51 in 10,000, according to cloud backup service provider Backblaze, which has 104,778 drives spinning in its data centre."

hard drives really will fly
hard drives really will fly like an eagle when thrown hard enough. Turns out that seagate drives are better suited for this shotput activity than for being used as actual drives.

That’s a feature for hearing your contact’s actual opinion of you! With them unaware and muttering: Oh that bastard is calling again, stright to voicemail with that!

The pain is not over at
The pain is not over at Nvidia(1) with even more bad investor news. Nvidia’s one main business, GPUs, is taking a pounding and that’s reflected in Nvidia’s market cap and share value. Why could Nvidia not remember what happend to AMD in that past regarding any coin mining focued production and AMD got stuck with a whole lot of inventory that they eventually had to write off.
Maybe Nvidia should have just had RTX for the Quadro/Professional markets for a generation or two and focused on the ROPs and higher GPixel/s fill rates and higher FPS rates for gaming. Nvidia that’s what the Bubbas that buy your GPUs are looking for those FPS metrics and that bragging rights nonsense that all of the Bubbas are so obsessed with.
RTX is a bit costly for Bubba and Bubba does not really care too much about some Image quality that’s passing by so quickly at 60+ FPS anyways.
Better to get the GTX/Turing SKUs to market ASAP but even that’s not going to stop that share value from going below triple digits now with the world economy showing signs of weakness!

Oh you are in such a state of TRIGGERED! Your little snowflake has been disrupted and you must limit the discussion to subjects that do not hurt that one little enfeebled cell of grey floating in that vast sea of lard inside that thick bony crust jug that’s attatched to your upper spine!
What’s up there little James did you buy in at Nvidia’s high point thinking that it would keep going up because of that tulip coin mania! A mania that had a past history of crashing and burning and leaving one other GPU maker with loads of inventory velocity issues ending up with the forced writedown of loads of GPU DIEs come accounting time!
Oh No! Little James wants the be the Proctor and limit the news to only things that do not affect his raw nerves. Did you take a bath with some unwise investment Little James because you got all silly down at the Rub-A-Dub on the Nvidia spiked coolaid!
Oh if anyone takes that time to reply and explicitly state they did not read something well that’s a damn good indicator that they did, in fact, read it Completely! And that it must have TRIGGERED the need to replay and state the non-fact that they did not read any of what was written. Just look at how disingenuous Little James becomes when he get so TRIGGERED!
