A Detailed Look

The Seasonic FOCUS SGX-650 power supply enclosure is painted matte black and measures 125mm (4.9”) square. The back panel includes an AC receptacle, main power On-Off switch, and an open honey-comb grill.

The SGX-650 incorporates Seasonic’s Hybrid Silent Fan Control, which allows fan-less operation at low power for silent operation up to about 30% load.

The power supply uses a 120mm x 15mm fan on the top for cooling.  The Globe Fan (S1201512HB) is rated for 0.45A at 12 VDC and is controlled by the Hybrid Silent Fan Control circuit. It features a Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) for long life and quiet operation.

The front panel on the SGX-650 has eight modular cable connectors nicely keyed and labelled to prevent inadvertently plugging a cable into the wrong connector.

All of the modular cables are the flat, ribbon-style in black. Note these cables are intentionally short for use in small form-factor cases.

Under the Hood

Here are a few pictures showing the layout and components inside the FOCUS SGX-650 power supply. Of course Seasonic is the OEM!

The FOCUS SGX series features a modern LLC resonant circuit design with DC-to-DC converters for increased efficiency (the VRMs are located near the top just below the front connector board in the photo above).  The layout of components is clean while the soldering appears to be excellent. All of the capacitors used inside the PSU are high-quality Japanese made electrolytic and solid polymer caps. For example the SGX-650 uses a single Nichicon GG(M) primary electrolytic bulk capacitor rated for 470uF, 400V and 105°C.
