Ryzen 3000 On Older Chipsets, Worry No More!

MSI have released a number of new motherboards using the X470, B450 and A320 chipsets, specifically enhanced for use with one of the new generation of Ryzen processors.  They are all part of the MAX family and ship with UEFI BIOS versions already fully compatible with the new processors and can also support higher frequency RAM.  Their new A-XMP tool will let you take advantage of up to DDR4-4133 MHz, configurable in the Click BIOS 5 interface.

Those who already have an MSI motherboard can check here for the latest BIOS versions which also add compatibility for Ryzen 3000 CPUs.

The motherboard’s packaging makes it easy to spot these new models, which is a bonus considering how many 300 and 400 series AM4 motherboards are on the market right now.  Look for the MAX name as well as the AMD Ryzen Desktop 3000 Ready label on the front as well.  You won’t get PCIe 4.0 support on these new boards, but you will see a lot more features at a lower price than the equivalent X570 motherboard. Then again, MSI is offering a free MSI MasterLiquid AiO cooler with the purchase of select X570 boards.

If you are looking at an upgrade in the near future, these might be a better choice for those on a budget or who don’t expect to see great benefits from the first generations of PCIe 4.0 compatible NVMe SSDs.
